Polygon for Vital [Vital Presets Pack]

Took a detour from the #Shake project to try messing about with some pure electronic dance music creation, with the aim of making a full continuous 10 track album of heavy synth EDM.

To start, I've named the track 'Oscillate' due to the aggressive use of low frequency oscillators controlling the filters over the main synths. Did experiment with a lot of vocal chops and choir sampling for a while but nothing really suited other than the stabs you hear there.

Stance - #1 Oscillate

Heard a track recently that I thought would be a good foundation for yet another #FrenchHouse #citypop style disco tune, and it definitely could have taken a lot more time to get into a really good place, but after only a few hours I was already fairly happy with it so decided to ship it anyway, to get back to my albums Stance and Shake. It features no original music, it's all samples - and I took a somewhat minimalist approach to the layering, instead automating a lot of effects to give variation rather than new sample elements.

Track #11 - Nobody's Lass

I wanted an ambient bridge from the first track to the second, and this started as a one minute pad loop but by the end I'd developed it further with the arpeggiators, the crescendo and filter sweeps at the end, ready to drop into something with more of a beat & melody.

I started with just 'analogue' (as in, manually inputted) keys/chords, hence the name, but by the end frankly I'd quantized and applied LFOs everywhere, so I suppose it's diet-analogue.

Stance #2 - Luna-o-age

I think this is one of the better produced tracks so far, incorporating some live recorded guitar fills, with the heavily automated midi tracks. It was also a risk to take a departure from the themes in the bridge with the chords in a different key but I think it worked out well.

Stance #3 - Frontier

Improvised a melody with the super bright synth over some pad chords that took their root from the bass, which itself was taken from the final closing melody of Stance #3 - Luna-o-age. Wanted to keep the boldness of the melody, and apply some slushwave elements i've recently been listening too, trying to saturate the reverb and slow the tempo.

Stance #4 - Multilayered Sunshield

Took a very famous reference track and tried to build an electronic counterpoint to it; rescued it from the brink of being boring with some processed guitar riffs blended with a synth. Getting the bass in the mix was the hardest, I'm still unsure as to whether it's too weak or not, hoping less is more.

Stance #5 - Late & See

I only played a single note to make this. After watching a few videos on generative ambient music, I tried to create something that hinted at the classical elements/seasons etc. I had three sections split into the arrangement sections (e.g. drums, bass, melody etc.) all with instruments and effects loaded to randomly self-generate the inputs via over 600 LFOs and other midi tools within Ableton all linked together and layered. I could export the audio again and it'd sound similar, but will never be exactly the same.

I tried to make as few editorial decisions as possible, but still needed to cut things back in part, and limit certain effects' influence. Some bits sound great, others just white noise. Whilst not the best music, it did teach me the most about Ableton out of everything produced so far, with the exception of maybe Track #1. Will try this sort of music creation again but not for a while, and mainly for techno house melody stuff.

Track #12 - Elemental

So, I took the main sample from a song featured on an Ad, but it turned out to be one of the most difficult sample I've tried to use so far. It was super difficult to find the key (and I'm sure it changes mid sample, as does the time signature), and so improvising a bass/melody around it meant for some odd moments of audible discord.

Still, I'm relatively happy with how it turned out. I did make some great use of Ableton's features previously ignored, hopefully it's made the final mix much better. As with all the tunes there's probably another week or so's tinkering it could benefit from but it was becoming a bit tedious - The next thing I need to work on is arrangement I think.

🎵🚦 Track - #13 Dos and Don'ts by RRACOS🚦🎵 [Chill Hop/Soul Groove/Electronic]

With some close reliance on a banging reference track, this track tried to layer lots of synths leads, arpeggiators and pad chords without sounding too cluttered. A difficult one to produce and bring all the elements through without overloading the mix - spent a lot more time mixing and re-mixing than I would normally and I think it's paid off.
