Rhian Sheehan & Arli Liberman 'Sahar' is the fourth single from Rhian Sheehan & Arli Liberman's album Traces. Showcasing a more ambient side of the project, with the track building tension throughout, evoking a sonic world which feels both futuristic and ancient.

Drawing inspiration from Blade Runner and Peter Gabriel’s Passion score, ‘Sahar’ highlights Arli’s Eastern-influenced guitar work, featuring fretless guitar played with an eBow and processed through modular reverbs and delays. 

Traces immerses listeners in a dreamscape that feels both futuristic and nostalgic, distant and familiar - like a forgotten past or an undiscovered future - offering an immersive, yet intimate cinematic experience that unfolds like the soundtrack to an unmade film, all while staying true to their distinct styles and crafting a vivid and emotive journey.

“Specular” is one of the most electronic-sounding tracks on Traces, with Sheehan and Liberman weaving immersive synth textures around Arli’s rhythmic guitar ideas. The track’s central five-note Hydrasynth hook became the anchor for its evolving layers of sound. True to the duo’s organic approach, every element was created with outboard gear in the studio - even the kick drum was sculpted with guitar pedals. Additional contributions from Ed Zuccollo (Zuke) on synths and Riki Gooch on percussion added further depth to its spacious, tactile atmosphere.

“Drift” is a meeting point between Sheehan’s love of synthesizers and Liberman’s atmospheric guitar work, with the two sonic worlds colliding in a spacious, evolving soundscape. Built around an arpeggiated synth line, the track developed through experimentation with structure, peaks, and flowing dynamics. Many of its rhythmic textures were created organically through Arli’s guitar rig, sampling and reshaping sounds into percussive layers. The result is a richly immersive, synth-driven piece that highlights the duo’s collaborative process.

“Powercut” began as a conversation in the studio about how they might create music acoustically if the power ever went out. Arli sat at the piano and sketched a simple chord progression, which became the foundation for the track. Around this motif, Sheehan and Liberman built a tapestry of textures, later inviting their friend Ed Zuccollo to reinterpret the chords on Rhodes. With these elements in place, the structure gradually took shape, resulting in a warm, organic piece that contrasts with the album’s more electronic moments.

“Plateau” is another dive into the duo’s love of immersive, otherworldly textures. Built as an expansive soundscape, the track layers atmospheric guitar and synth work with a vocal contribution from Arli’s partner, Jennifer Raoult. She drew on words by French author Victor Hugo, adding a poetic depth that heightens the track’s sense of mystery. The result is a piece that feels both intimate and vast, blurring the line between song and soundscape.

Rhian Sheehan is an award-winning music producer and screen composer from New Zealand. Known for his fusion of atmospheric-post-rock with electronic and chamber music, he has released 6 albums and 2 EP’s on Loop Recordings (NZ/Aus), Darla (US), Preco (Japan). His 2013 release Stories From Elsewhere has received much praise; renowned US reviewer John Diliberto (Echoes) calling it “a modern ambient chamber music masterpiece of quietly epic dimensions". His 2018 album, A Quiet Divide, is his most orchestral album to date, merging chamber strings & piano, with emotionally charged cinematic post-rock atmospheres. Releasing the album alongside a 6 date audiovisual live tour around New Zealand, the album reached no.2 on the NZ Top 20.

His work as a screen composer is diverse, actively writing scores for a wide variety of film, television, documentary, advertising, multi-media exhibits, and 360o Fulldome Planetarium dome show projects around the world, having worked on projects featuring luminaries Andy Serkis, David Tennant, Tim Allen, Martin Scorsese, Rupert Grint, and Jared Leto.  He has written music featured on many notable TV shows and channels, including Top Gear (UK), the hit HBO series Silicon Valley, BBC Horizon, CNN, National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Netflix, America's Got Talent, and has written music featured during The US Super Bowl, and The Academy Awards.
Sheehan has composed music for various multimedia installations and exhibits around the world, including UK's National Space Centre, The Kennedy Space Center, London’s Natural History Museum, Ferrari World, World of WearableArt, and Weta Workshop. His score for the 12-part prime-time series The Cult won him a Qantas Film & TV Award (Best original music in a TV series), and he also wrote the score for the Emmy Award winning series Reservoir Hill. Sheehan’s music was used extensively during NBC’s prime-time coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, and he has written music featured in a variety of commercials, including spots for Google, Nike, GoPro, American Express, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Facebook. He has written for Hans Zimmer's custom music company Bleeding Fingers and Extreme Music. Sheehan has scored music for the acclaimed films Belief: The possession of Janet Moses and Stray, and more recently scored the mixed-reality AR steampunk inspired robot shooting game, Dr. Grordbort Invaders, produced by Magic Leap & Weta Workshop (Peter Jackson & Richard Taylor's award-winning special effects and prop company).
He has written scores for numerous UK and US produced 360o Fulldome 3D Planetarium shows, most notably, We Are Astronomers, We Are Aliens, We Are Stars (for which he was awarded Best Original Score at the Fiske Planetarium Awards), and Back To The Moon For Good, which was produced by Google XPRIZE, the UK National Space Centre, and Robert K. Weiss (producer of The Blues Brothers). Narrated by Tim Allen (Toy Story), Back To The Moon For Good is one of the most popular and watched Planetarium Dome shows ever made; having screened in over 450 Planetariums around the world.
