SkyVibes @ MoDem Festival 2021 | The Seed V.2

We’re back following a brief hiatus with podcast 140 - a deep, dubby, emotive and hypnotic ride courtesy of Laima Adelaide.

As put into words by Laima herself, as an accompaniment to her ‘Modern Nature’ album (Annulled Music, Jan 2021):

“My main inspiration is exploration:
Walking in the forest.
Footsteps become rhythm.
Leaves become noise.
The movement of trees becomes ambience.
Each of the tracks is a study of an unknown environment which forms itself in my imagination.”

While she may be talking of her productions, we can certainly feel the whispers of nature calling to us through this mix.

As many of us know, music can open our eyes and awaken our senses to the world around us in new and wondrous ways… as its sounds and vibrations infiltrate our minds - and if we fully surrender to that moment -  nature’s colours begin to illuminate, its sounds gently vibrate against our skin, we see the tiny intricacies of Mother Nature for the miracles that they are, we are reminded of the interconnection of all things, the fleeting and the eternal.

For us, the beauty of listening to a mix like this is that we're reminded just how powerful music can be, and we feel the strongest urge to take a long, leisurely walk in nature to explore, and reconnect, with this journey as our guide.

Our next guest is A Belgian DJ raised in the heart of Europe, his taste in electronic music has been shaped and inspired by a variety of scenes and sounds across the continent and beyond. Having lived in London, Brussels, Hamburg, and Hong Kong in the space of the past 5 years, his musical project has served as a way to remain grounded in the face of change, providing a soundtrack to his introspection since starting off as a DJ only a few years ago. Pulsar @ Gare - 06 - 10 - 2021

Have you ever gone outside on a cloudy day and smelled that it was going to rain? Or, after a rainstorm, noticed that there was a certain smell in the air? Childhood memories come to mind when playing in the puddles of water was the best moment of the day. It was the time when the smell of earth meant the onset of a joyous season.

Petrichor is the term given to that unique scent following a rain shower – when the world seems to sigh with pleasure, and we, unconsciously perhaps, breathe in a little more deeply, savouring the smells in return.

Francesco Piunti is the man behind @deepbreakfastseries, a brilliant and touchfull mix series focused on ambient sounds. Our maximum true respect for the dedication, knowledge and excellent way of doing. Returning to the term petrichor, Francesco gives us a short poem from Leah Snyder that goes like this:

“I step outside, the sky above gray as slate
petrichor seeping up through the grass,
engulfing my state of mind as i inhale
and guiding me into a place of hushed abstraction”.

Definitely, petrichor is more than just a happy smell. It is a promise of abundance, a welcome chance of survival and shelter, and a hope that the merry childhood days will be back again.

.CHPTR042 ‘Petrichor’ | Francesco Piunti

Thorhallur Skulason @thor_thule_records was dubbed the Godfather of Icelandic techno. 
As a young producer he scored his first release, Awakening the Gods during the golden era of Sven Vath’s Harthouse Records in 1995, quickly following this up with Live In Reykjavik on the German imprint soon after. Later that year Thor initiated his own agenda setting @thule-records, which would be home to fellow Icelandic luminaries @exos, Ozy, @yagya (with Thor as Sanasol). 
Like many of his generation he moved on from the music scene as techno began to become harder and loopier in the early 00s but his tracks remained staples for the likes of Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos, with the taste making DJs dipping into genre spanning range of productions credited to Thor, from his tougher releases to the tight, grooving and sexy sound that fits so well with today’s dance floors. 
The temptation to return to music became too much for Thor, with recognition coming once more after a much-anticipated reappearance with Icelandic Lost Tracks Volumes 1 & 2 on German label Connoisseur in 2010. Around 2014 musical cycles had realigned so that Thor’s slick, dubby take on house and techno was again at the forefront of techno’s relentless march. A reissue set from Berlin’s highly respected @sushitech followed, compiling Thor’s most celebrated monikers for the first time. Consequences brought together stark techno tracks such as Aliens Don’t Boogie and the fluid, housey leanings of Oz Artists’ As If The Living Were Moving for a new generation of clued up techno lovers. Simultaneously in Iceland the producer was readying his own Thule label for a run of retrospective releases including the much sought after The Normal Spot by Sanasol and Richie Hawtin’s secret weapon T1/T2.

O Arnaldo Moura é curador das matinées na Casa das Artes Bissaya Barreto, onde ajuda a escolher os melhores DJs semanalmente. Fundador da Rádio Baixa. DJ em nome próprio ou com o enigmático alter-ego Talk Show Host, é presença habitual nas pistas de dança, cafés e restaurantes da cidade. Na mala de discos traz música que foge para a dança sem grandes pudores de género, há clássicos à mistura com a última compra, gentil como é até aceita discos pedidos num subreddit obscuro.

O percurso musical de Rui G. denota a sua insaciável curiosidade e dedicação à pesquisa sonora. Movido pelo desejo de explorar novos horizontes da música eletrónica, foi desenvolvendo a sua técnica com habilidade e sensibilidade, desafiando-se constantemente a construir narrativas musicais imersivas, onde cada set é uma jornada cuidadosamente tecida.

O seu fascínio pela eletrónica foi crescendo ao longo dos anos, permitindo um refinamento pessoal que culminou com a sua estréia oficial como DJ, em 2009. Nem dois anos depois, em 2011, aceita o convite para integrar o coletivo Elements, uma plataforma de renome dedicada à música eletrónica, sediada em Coimbra. Esta promotora revelou-se um marco fundamental na sua evolução artística, abrindo portas para atuar em eventos e clubes icónicos da cena eletrónica, tanto em Coimbra como no Porto. Foi ao lado de artistas que admira, como David Rodrigues, Nelson Flip, The Advent, Deepbass, Brando Lupi, Nobody Home, NTOGN, BLNDR, Antigone, Dorian Gray, Freddy K e Henning Baer, que Rui G. consolidou a sua identidade sonora.

Dedicado, curioso e ambicioso, Rui G. compromete-se a ultrapassar barreiras musicais, apurando constantemente a sua técnica, descobrindo e revelando novas nuances das paisagens sonoras que oferece ao público. Os seus sets transcendem géneros e desafiam perceções pré-concebidas, convidando o público a uma autêntica viagem sensorial, sempre surpreendente.

Nos últimos tempos, tem marcado presença em clubes de referência como o Gare (Porto), Stilvoll Club (Neuss, Alemanha) e KABINET MÚZ (Brno, República Checa). Em 2022, atinge um dos pontos altos da sua carreira ao atuar no Boom Festival (The Gardens), o maior festival de música eletrónica em Portugal.
