Today Kiasmos, the duo of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen, release their long-awaited second album.

Kiasmos are returning, renewed and restored, with II. It’s the triumphant follow-up to their universally acclaimed self-titled debut in 2014, which re-envisioned minimal techno with orchestral flourishes and weightless production. They’d made most of that album in just two weeks; this time it’s been 10 years. The making of II was a test of their friendship, but also testament to how great musical chemistry can always go the distance and be just the same as it ever was. “In the beginning, we hadn’t established any sound, so it was easy to write,” says Janus.

Following the recently dropped EP Flown, today they share new single Burst which Janus describes as being “the moment when the whole album started coming together. A lot of work went into making this track what it is, making it an anchor for the rest of the album.”

Ólafur adds: “when we finally arrived at Burst it felt like a key to the puzzle of what a new Kiasmos could sound like.”

Ian Hawgood, label owner of Home Normal in the mix for the Shimmering Moods label series. 

Home Normal is a small record label by the river in Nakajuku, Tokyo, Japan. On a very basic level, Home Normal is about organic, soulful music. The label was set up with a focus on artists, who let the music and beautiful, minimal photography and design, do the talking. It is slowly evolving with more of a focus on film works, and quite a lot of noise and minimal south-east Asian influences. The main ethos on the label though is still firmly on organic works.

About the mix:

I especially prefer natural sounds or scenery without artificial materials, and I have visited many places so as to record them for composition or take pictures so far.
Nature tells us a lot of things. We simply feel it beautiful as well as fear, cruel once in a while. But I think they are all nature, I can feel cosmic beauty there. Always, I would like to feel those universal beauty, which no one can control, with my eyes and ears.

I would be happy if you could feel my thoughts even a little through this mix.
