Japan is our first collaboration. The ambient sounds on this record are fragments from our month-long stay in Japan during spring 2015: hundreds of Tokyo ravens in Yoyogi park, an old song found in an old man's small shop in Kyoto, the bird-like traffic signals in Naha, Okinawa, blending with the distorted voice of a man with a megaphone and a message... 
Back in Stockholm, these sounds became documentary elements in our music as well as sources for creating new sounds. The small, beautiful bowl we had brought home went to pieces, and the sonic character of the ceramic pieces turned into a delicate drone.

Recorded in Japan and Sweden 2015-2016 by Elin Franzén and Andreas Tilliander. Side A contains a remixed version of »Iris (Familiar)« by @Fourcolor featuring @Moskitoo, published by 12k in 2011. The project was made possible through funding by Musikverket.

Remo Seeland’s “Hollow Body” is a suspenseful exploration of the interaction between sound environments and individual perception. It was sparked by an intense physical experience the Swiss artist had during a residency in New York City. “The subway became a sort of ‘atonal symphony’ for me, provoking a full-body experience with the rattling of the overcrowded, airless trains,” the Hallow Ground founder explains. “However, while the old subway is not exactly beloved by everyone, it also represented for me the melancholic meta-level of the moloch above it.” The album, his first under his given name, makes this disparity audible over six tracks in which the visceral and the personal become at once abstract and universal. 

Based on field recordings from both urban and rural environments, “Hollow Body” aims to mirror another of Seeland’s psychosonic encounters. “In the highlands of Iceland, I noticed my pulse lowering and my breathing decelerating,” he says. “Just shortly after that, a single insect’s buzzing seemed so loud to me that I became even more aware of the silence surrounding me.” Silence, perception, order and the curious dialectics of the outside world and the inner workings of the human psyche are the central questions of “Hollow Body”.

Recorded in New York, Reykjavík and Zurich, “Hollow Body” draws extensively on field recordings and sees Seeland collaborating with Hallow Ground-affiliated artists Norman Westberg (Swans, guitar on “Body Innovation” and “Hollow City”) and Reinier van Houdt (Current 93, e-bowed guitar on “Hollow City” and Rhodes organ on “Pulse Points Green”), as well as the Swiss-based US-American musician Steve Fors (Deaf At Sea, trombone on “Second Coming”). The diversity of the source material is mirrored in the stylistic richness Seeland lays out with this LP. From the lush, bass-heavy drones of the opener “Body Innovation” to the downbeat-driven “Second Coming” and, finally, the haunting organ sounds of “Night Within”, “Hollow Body” forms a holistic entity that integrates idiosyncratic compositions into a coherent narrative.

“Hollow Body” was also conceptually inspired by Seeland’s research as a cultural scientist with a focus on Southeast Asian cultures, specifically the anomic tantric cults of India. It thus serves as a mediator between not only the individual experience of site-specific sounds and general ideas of sound production in and about space, but also between different compositional techniques ranging from drones to synthesized vocals and more primitive forms of ritualistic music. Its sonic abundancy is to be understood as a direct result of its underlying idea: at its most challenging, this record also makes the most coherent statements about the order of space, sound and their cryptic relationship with the human body.

Pétra is a new collaborative music project from Brian Allen Simon (aka Anenon) and Chantal Chadwick.

The duo’s debut album ‘Aunis’, released 20th September via Injazero Records, incorporates electronic and acoustic instrumentation which draws the listener into dream-like soundscapes and blends ambient sounds, modern composition, and abstract vibrations.

Primarily written, performed, produced, and recorded on the volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece in late 2018, Pétra means ‘stone, rock’, and the name of the project was inspired by a chance encounter with the photography of Daniel Boudinet as well as the geological formations of Nisyros. With additional work on the album completed in Loire, France and Mexico City, Mexico, the music is a site-specific reaction to all locales and was arranged in a free-form variety of methods with an improvisational energy being the driving force.

Compositions such as the reverberating ‘Aunis’ rely on ethereal sounds and deep repetition while the fluid ‘Landes’ is a weightless moment of sonic beauty and emotional depth.

Elsewhere, the reactionary ‘Fuzz’ and the meditative, hazy sound explorations of ‘Obsidian’ are hauntingly beautiful, while ‘Tavel’ is reminiscent of the melodic repetition of minimalist pioneers like Steve Reich. 

Los Angeles native Brian Allen Simon, aka Anenon, is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has received critical acclaim for his work from the likes of Pitchfork, The Wire, The Guardian, and more. 

Since his 2012 debut ‘Inner Hue’, Simon has continually and consistently proven his status as an innovator by co-curating an ambient music series at The Museum of Contemporary art in Los Angeles, and releasing critically acclaimed records such as 2016’s ‘Petrol’ and 2018’s ‘Tongue’. An officially sanctioned remix for Ryuichi Sakamoto in 2018 has only cemented this status further.

Chantal Chadwick is a musician, dancer, and founder of Assortment, an agency that supports artists working in photography, motion, and sound with an independent publishing branch for fine art books. 

Prior to founding Assortment, she was co-owner of a small gallery in New York City focusing on emerging contemporary artists. She has been quietly making music under the name Bed for close to a decade, but Pétra will be her first release. She is currently working between Mexico City and Los Angeles.

Erased Tapes present 'Handfuls of Night' — the highly anticipated follow-up to Penguin Cafe’s much applauded 2017 album 'The Imperfect Sea' — inspired by the Antarctic, Arthur Jeffes’ journey following in Scott’s footsteps and our penguin friends that reside there.

Using gut-stringed violins, viola, cello, bass, percussion, upright and grand pianos, synthesiser, harmonium and more, Arthur Jeffes and his cohorts have crafted a vivid series of panoramic sonic landscapes, that are as rich in cerebral poignancy as they are in emotional depth.

Handfuls of Night began life after Greenpeace commissioned Jeffes to write four pieces of music corresponding to four breeds of penguins, to help raise awareness for the endangered Antarctic seas . A fundraising evening at EartH in Hackney followed, where Penguin Cafe premiered the four songs named after their feathered counterparts to a sold out audience; the rousing contemporary folk inflected ‘Chinstrap’, the mournful and minimalistic ‘Adelie’, stoic and rhythmic ‘The Life of an Emperor’ and the wistful, string-laden ‘Gentoo Origin’.

“This record started with a core of pieces I wrote specifically about penguins in the Antarctic for a project with Greenpeace in autumn 2018. There are four native Antarctic penguin species – each with their own individual characteristics and natures. I carried on from there to envisage a whole anthropomorphised world, where these penguins had narratives and adventures that we soundtracked”, says Jeffes. But both the album and Penguin Cafe as a project have origins that reach further back:

“In 2005 I was asked to join an expedition re-creating Scott’s last Antarctic trip in 1911 for the BBC, using the same Edwardian equipment. I’m no explorer but I was keen, especially as there’s a family link – Scott was married to my great grandmother before she married my great grandfather. 

Antarctica by this stage being a protected environment, we swapped to the Arctic circle where we spent 3 months on the Greenland ice sheet, first dog-sledding and then man-hauling just short of 1000 km at 10,000 feet, across ice fields and glaciers. 

I had lots of time to ponder my life back home. It was then that I decided to get my Master of Music degree and focus on composing music, and also then that I realised that even in the most remote silent places, music can still be a huge part of one’s internal world and imagination.  Whilst on the expedition. I spent days playing things back in my head and also writing new things, which I would then try and write down at the end of the day.”

Handfuls of Night’s tones, textures and melodies evoke otherworldly expanses, which at different junctures are either foreboding, awe inspiring or peaceful. There’s subtly morphing rhythmic repetition throughout, somewhere between minimalism, krautrock and the piano-cascades of label peer Lubomyr Melnyk. Jeffes creates a kinetic, circling motion, which drives the album forward in the form of a musical trip that mirrors the physical journey it was inspired by.

Penguin Cafe was founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, after bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians including members of Suede and Gorillaz, to perform his father Simon Jeffes’ legacy of world-renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, ten years after his untimely death in 1997. Handfuls of Night is out this autumn amid a string of UK live dates, before taking the album on a worldwide tour in 2020 with more dates to be announced.
