Damian Lazarus celebrates 20 Years of his world-renowned Crosstown Rebels imprint with a special album  project of unreleased cuts and fresh remixes, featuring material from Black Coffee, Maceo Plex, Art Department,  Dennis Cruz and many more. 

Ringing in a major milestone in style, 2023 will see Lazarus and Crosstown mark  the 20th Anniversary of the label with a series of celebratory projects unveiled in the lead-up to summer, with ‘CR20 The Album’ set for  release on 12th May 2023.  

“20 years ago, I dreamed a dream of creating a family of like-minded, crazy individuals from all corners of the planet - releasing  music to the world and making people dance. That dream was Crosstown Rebels, and this year we are 20. Over these years, I have  forged beautiful friendships, discovered very talented artists and tried my best to help, advise and support some of the most  colourful characters in dance music. Crosstown Rebels is more than a record label, it is family. 

So 2023 will mark the label’s 20th Anniversary. This is an opportunity for the Crosstown Rebels family, a global community of  artists, DJs and creatives, and the label’s myriad of followers to celebrate this momentous milestone. There will be parties and  events around the world. A killer compilation of exclusives and special remixes, a beautiful coffee table book, a short film, and a  special launch event are planned to bring together the sights and sounds of the label’s unique and influential history. There’s lots to  share, announce and reminisce. 20 years young.” - Damian Lazarus. 

Opening the package, Lazarus’ own 2020 collaboration ‘Into The Sun’ with regular Crosstown vocalist Jem Cooke is given a cosmic rework  by Johannesburg’s Major League DJz, while Jamie Jones’ slick ‘Paradise 2011’ is stripped back and given a new lease of life by the  hypnotic and heady sounds of Art Department. Opening the B-Side, Dennis Cruz brings his percussive Latin-infused signature sound  palette to Chilean musician and producer Pier Bucci’s ‘Hay Consuelo’, before Audiojack’s ‘Feel Good’, another standout collaboration  alongside Cooke, is taken into synth-led territories as Michael Mayer reaches for an evolving bed of captivating tones. 

The second half of the project brings more excellently remixed material, both new and old, with GRAMMY-winning DJ/producer Black Coffee  turning his hand to the label’s first release of 2023 in Made By Pete and Zoe Kypri’s emotive ‘Horizon Red’, unveiling reworked melodies and  sparkling keys as he delivers an interpretation of a track which has featured as a staple in his sets. Next, the project welcomes Adam Ten &  Yamagucci’s playful yet off-kilter and wonky ‘The K Dance’ which unveils itself as a production perfect for those late night hours and early  afters, before Ellum boss Maceo Plex’s ‘Together (2011 Mix)’ brings another lost production to the mix with a driving and zipping ride through  sugary synths and soaring leads. To close, Tibi Dabo turns his attention to Guti & Dubshape’s absorbing ‘Every Cow Has A Bird’, delivering a  nimble minimal-led trip through lush pads and crisp percussion to round things out in style.

Madchester anthem from 1989, which, along with ‘WFL’ by the Happy Mondays, ‘Voodoo Ray’ by A Guy Called Gerald and ‘Fools Gold’ by the Stone Roses, encapsulates the time when the rainy city was at the epicentre of the dance universe.

Twenty years later I included it as the closing track on my Essential Mix (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/essential-mix-greg-wilson-mix-for-bbc-radio-1), and, as with the opening track, the Dimitri From Paris edit of ‘Down To Love Town’ by The Originals, it features Jesse Jackson’s invocation from the 1972 Wattstax festival (which had previously been used to such great effect by Andrew Weatherall in his remix of ‘Come Together’ by Primal Scream).

However, I originally put this together not for the Essential Mix, but to open my appearance at the Electric Chair Last Supper on December 29th 2007. A number of previous guests had been invited to play for half an hour each, as the decision had been made to close this Manchester institution whilst it was still at the height of its popularity. As things worked out, I was the final guest to deejay at this cherished club night - only the residents played after me. I wanted to pay my respects in a proper manner, evoking the spirit of Manchester past, back through the halcyon late 80’s days of The Haçienda to my own time there in ’83, and at Legend beforehand, via a handful of track selections that reflected the spirit of this great music city, for which the Electric Chair, soon to be no more, had written a further chapter. The purpose of this edit was purely to extend the intro of the ‘Pacific 707’ version to suitably build into Jesse Jackson's poignant words before the beats kick in, whilst adding some subtle ambience to add to the overall atmospheric of this wonderful track, which always struck me as a ‘Stranger On The Shore’ for the Rave generation (the evocative 1961 single by clarinettist Acker Bilk, the first British recording to reach #1 in the USA).

No stranger to shelling down raves and studio sessions alike, Masker is back with a crate of rounds, C4 and juggernaut suits to blow the bloody doors off. Already a firm favourite with the Serial Killaz camp and having released previously via the Mixtape Series, it's no surprise he's back at it with his debut EP.

Every Ting hasn't left virtual boxes since it landed on dub and with its moody, rolling bassline and instant appeal to double drop it with everything in the same key range, it's not going near the trash can in a hurry. Dripping in Moschino, sticking to corners and grabbing you when you least expect it.

Jungle Lick follows suit but in a very '95 flavour, another reason why the diverse style of Masker's production has fallen so well with the label. Atmospheric vibes a run with Hush and certainly not one you want to fall into any K hole to. It's horror presence would freak out the dance like nobody's business so it's probably a good idea to shout the lighting technician to reach for the bright lights.

Harmonic Drones is a growler with attitude and nothing less. Cooking up some trouble in his studio has led to Masker lashing down all kinds of filth with this and it's another fine part of this EP that fits the title perfectly.

Title track business ends the EP and Fully Armed fills your speaker box full of colour, flooding those all important Serial Killaz vibes from ear to ear. A clever mix from Masker with elements of both his moody, sublow style and good vibes. It's like a bastard lovechild of good versus evil. Nasty yet satisfying regardless of the dance you're dropping it at.
