The mission of the Picking Up Rocks blog has always been the same, to shine a light on the best pop music regardless of label affiliation or level of fame or social media presence or perceived coolness...because WHO CARES. A great song is a great song. And whenever we stumble upon a great song ( and there were a lot in 2019) we want to share it no matter if it was born in a garage, someone's bedroom, a state of the art studio or a freakin' garden shed !
Did that sound angry ? I swear it's unintentional, guess I just get weary seeing the same songs mentioned on every year end list (already). Look, I genuinely like Lil Nas X, Lizzo & Billie Eilish. But know who released songs as good as theirs this year? Kingsbury, Whitelands & The Hails. It's okay if you haven't heard all of them because that's why we're here, to both celebrate them & maybe introduce you if you haven't. 
I have listened to thousands upon thousands of songs this year because I am a crazy person who is always looking for a song to alter & upend the daily grind. Culling the master list down to the 50 best has been semi-nightmarish because there were so many goods but dammit we did it !
It's my sincerest hope that you'll discover something or someone within it who rocks your life & makes you swoon or at least makes you say Fuck Yeah repeatedly ⚡️

Drama – of the interpersonal kind – that’s what Hajk are about on their upcoming album. The band burst onto the Norwegian scene with their self-titled debut album, garnering broad appreciation way outside of their home country. Now, the highly anticipated follow-up is near – a record that both pulls at the heartstrings and urges you to dance.

Hajk’s 2017 debut received praise from the likes of Astrid S, Sigrid and Kimbra, as well as a united Norwegian music press. Internationally, outlets such as Noisey, Stereogum, Line of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound, The Independent and Clash Music gave the group standing ovations for their idiosyncratic, yet supremely catchy pop tunes, while likening them to everything from Dire Straits and Aztec Camera to Haim. On “Drama” Hajk embrace their urban influences, naming artists such as Solange, Frank Ocean and Thundercat.

With the sophomore album, “Drama”, a more confident band is on display. Sharpened by more studio experience, they have once again produced the record themselves. Blending analogue and digital sounds, switching between programmed arrangements and live takes from the studio, drawing on three lead vocalists and several guest musicians, Hajk has done whatever necessary to fullfill their creative vision. 

The title “Drama” relates to the drama of humanity and a somewhat naïve yearning for love in a world in which love sometimes seems scarce.

It’s been a while since the band recorded the songs for their debut album, and you can hear that they’re eager to get going. This time they are taking the sound of their debut a few notches further. We get the simple but grand ballads and we get the catchy up-tempo pop songs. In short, drama.

New York City based songwriter Gary Canino, submits to you a generous collection of country-inflected music under the Dark Tea moniker that honor the past while looking ahead. There is, as they say, a little something for everyone. With Dark Tea, Gary emerges as a scientist does from her lab, having cracked the formula. The formula? Honor the listeners’ desire for both danger and comfort. And so, when a melody starts to wander from the marked trail, Gary soothes the listener’s ear with a simple one-four (“Variable Reward”). And so, when ambling verse figure disorients the listener, it repeats until she feels at home in it (“The Bird’s Nest”). And so, a long verse finds punctuation in a tasteful punchy chorus (“No Notifications”). The album also contains no fewer than three truly great guitar solos, including one from Meg Duffy’s Hand Habits on “Rollin’ Back The Dial”. Born into a space between the notes of Fleetwood Mac and the words of Sylvia Plath, we are Running Red Lights. Back in 2006 we were on our way to catch a train when we we fell into yesterday's sunset. Littered like paper over the road to nowhere we blew like tumbleweed into 2018. Along the way we swallowed a few bitter pills, collected the sum of a thousand mistakes and ultimately un-earthed an anthology of songs and a sound. We look out of the sunset still dreaming of a way out. We're older than when we were young and though we never did yet catch that train here's to hopin...
