Eclectics release 'Let It Pass' by Statues

Essex-based trio Statues return to Eclectics with another four-track EP. There’s no change to the MO – two exceptional OGs rock up to the party, each with a +1 in the form of a killer remix.

Rotunda is all swagger and shoulders. A mid-paced beast that swaps sharp edges for a slow roll, that rocks… but gently. The synthetic bass dives deep, providing balance and ballast while the upper register takes advantage of this free reign. Zither glissandos ebb and flow while guitar lines drift in and out, marshalled into time by a neck-snapping shuffle with a sense of slow, unhurried purpose.

Showing a similar, singular focus, is Gold Suite, AKA Bali’s Joey Fitzgerald. Opening the original up wide enough to drop in a piano, acoustic guitar and lead line licks, he builds a remix that is in equal parts balearic groover and 3am mover. The result is a certified banger that will see arms raised quicker than any armed bank heist.

Lessons, by contrast, sees Statues in repose. A simple cymbal pattern leads the way as organ, strings and bass join in, laying the ground for the mournful vocal refrain “The past is a lesson”. What follows is a blissful slice of horizontal balearica pitched perfectly for these times. With the world opening its arms to us once again, this is the soundtrack for us all to sway into its embrace.

Coyote take the remix reins, their deep dub adding lift to the kick and bounce to the bass. They pare back and stretch out, filling the space with found fragments and soft sonic furnishings. The result is a very different destination, but one that still wraps itself around you like a welcome hug from an old friend. Expansive synths and tightly echoed effects ride the wave of a way-out sound without losing sight of the original.

It’s a lesson to us all.

Hamburg’s Front club was already the stuff of legend, when it was still open. When I was teenager on the outskirts of Frankfurt in the very early nineties - and before the name Klaus Stockhausen rang a bell - Boris Dlugosch was not only at the helm of said club, but also one of Germany’s finest purveyors of house music. Front was his home as well as the playground for a colourful bunch of club kids from all walks of life. Its roots went back to the eighties as a gay club and it branched out to anyone who couldn’t „even dance straight “. 
The rumours about this club were strong enough to get people like Playhouse’s Ata on a road trip and have youngsters like me fantasizing about it. The musical menu during that time was the monster house sound from the US and the UK that rotated deepness with hysteric glamour.  
Of course, Front’s sound was finely nuanced. Boris Dlugosch learned his craft from Klaus Stockhausen, who stopped his DJ career in 1992 (because - as he told me in an interview about ten years later - „every Bratwurst wanted to be a DJ all of a sudden“) to pursue a career as fashion editor and stylist.  Stockhausen’s thing as a resident (which actually meant to play at ONE club EVERY week during that time), was a mixture between electro, US-American R&B, British street soul, new wave and the emerging house sound. If you manage to dig up old recordings on the internet (a musical diet I lived on for a few years), there are striking similarities to the way classic US-American DJ would play, while adding a fierce uniqueness that won’t let it pale in comparison. On the contrary, the sound of Front is one of the most interesting, you will ever lend your ears, too. 
So, why a Front mix and compilation 21 years after the club closed its doors? On the one hand, because it’s story hasn’t been told yet and it’s worth telling. On the other one, German clubs like Robert Johnson or Berghain - as divergent as they might are - both resemblance Front’s spirit, diversity and musical open mindedness. And finally, because dancing is still fun.
Even, if putting a compilation like together this took over one year in the making, is peppered with licensing horrors and other obstacles to dreadful to share them here, we are happy to have it done. Spread over a double-CD and two compilation LPs that are mainly chronological, Klaus Stockhausen and Boris Dlugosch picked and mixed some of the club’s most cherished records and sweetest moments. This is the sound of Front. And even, if I was never able to move my feet on its dance floor, I for one would be a very different DJ without it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Das Komplex is the uncrowned king of Polish nu disco. He can be considered as one of the world ambassadors of the ever growing Polish electronic scene. Among his fans are such characters as DJ Harvey, who placed one of his tracks on the second "Mercury Rising". Over last few years Das Komplex released his music on many influential labels, such as Pets, Love On The Rocks, FASRAT, Young Adults and King of Kong. Now his extraordinary talent joins Polena's ranks. "Weź Mnie Ze Sobą EP" ("Take Me With You") consists four dancefloor-oriented tracks, that are full of style and class.

The latest release of Koszalin-based artist includes, among other tracks, one of the first songs by Das Komplex. Few people know that the project was born many years ago as a duo with vocalist Emose Uhunmwangho. Her amazing voice can be heard in the title track from the EP. Super catchy hook, dynamic arrangement and irresistible groove - this is the recipe for a real hit. The other three tracks do not differ in quality from "Weź Mnie Ze Sobą". Songs such as "Chwile" and "Somebody" draw inspiration from New York dub disco from the 80's and later reemergence of that style, for example Metro Area. "Zbliża Się Zima" is a 12-minute psychedelic journey through the seaside forests in autumn. Winter may be coming, but the latest release of Das Komplex will keep us warm for many, many months!

Do jego wielkich fanów należy sam DJ Harvey, ktory umieścił jedno z nagrań na drugiej składance z cyklu "Mercury Rising". Das Komplex publikował muzykę w wielu wpływowych wytwórniach, jak Pets, Love On The Rocks, FASRAT, Young Adults czy King of Kong. Teraz jego nieprzeciętny talent zasila Polenę. "Weż Mnie Ze Sobą EP" to cztery taneczne utwory pełne stylu i klasy.

Najnowsze wydawnictwo artysty z Koszalina zawiera m.in. jeden z pierwszych utworów Das Komplex. Mało kto wie, że projekt narodził się wiele lat temu jako duet z wokalistką Emose Uhunmwangho, którą możemy usłyszeć w tytułowym utworze z EPki. Wkręcający się refren, dynamiczna aranżacja i nieodparcie taneczny groove - oto przepis na prawdziwy przebój. Pozostałe trzy numery nie odbiegają poziomem od "Weź Mnie Ze Sobą". Takie utwory, jak "Chwile" i "Somebody" czerpią inspiracje z nowojorskiego dub disco z lat 80. i późniejszych, ale zbliżonych stylistyką nagrań Metro Area. "Zbliża Się Zima" to 12-minutowa psychodeliczna podróż przez nadmorskie lasy jesienią. Zbliża się zima, ale najnowsze wydawnictwo Das Komplex będzie nas skutecznie rozgrzewać przzez wiele miesięcy!
