I was just getting on my bike in Soho one night when I heard an incredible voice across the street come out of nowhere. It was singing a Stevie Wonder song and sounded about as close to the man himself as you could get. Naturally I whipped my phone out and started recording, and when he finished I went over to talk to him as I felt like it was an opportunity I shouldn't miss. I thought it was a guy singing to his friends, but it was actually a busker doing the rounds on foot.

His name was Lee. I told him I make house music and would love to get him in a studio sometime. I took his number and after months of trying to find a date, we finally got in a small studio space in Camden and recorded him singing some songs he'd written over some beats, just so I could see what he was about. We recorded the session and I told him I wanted to arrange another date to work on a couple of the songs he had showed me. 'I Don't Want No' is one of those songs.

I never saw him again. His phone stopped working and the email address he gave me never yielded a reply. A publisher who had shown interest in him emailed me and send she thinks he ended up in prison, but I have no idea. Either way, he will be registered as the songwriter with PRS so if he turns up one day, he will be able to make his claim. The track uses the rough vocals we recorded in that trial session, and hopefully you can hear what an impressive talent he is.

The track, put out on https://soundcloud.com/toolroomrecords, is a 122bpm creeper of a groove with a bouncy bassline and a hypnotically repetitive vocal refrain. By the end of it, you'll either be driven to insanity on the dance floor or will feel compelled to enter a romantic relationship with your toaster.

Brawther is one of the most consistent and enjoyable producers in the game, taking his time to get it spot on each and every. His catalogue may not be vast, but it's all killer and no filler – and for those of you who weren't paying attention at the back, a cheat sheet is on its way. Endless is due soon on Chez Damier's sub-imprint Balance, a 3xLP compilation taking stock of Brawther's releases thus far. Oh, plus an as-yet-unheard cut for good measure: this one right here.

Brawther's dub of "Khawuleza" retains the groove and wholesome vibe, but leaves only the faintest trace of the vocals intact, letting Vusa Mkhaya float between the skippy, sticky, squelchy filter. It's warm house music par excellence; where the balmy original felt kissed by afternoon sun, this dub is a fast-forward to that special place at the end of the party where day is breaking anew, full of promise.

You may already know Steve Cobby: one of Hull's most talented residents, co-founder of Fila Brazillia and a chronic remixer/music maker. During 30 years of musical service he's forged remixes for acts as brilliantly diverse as Radiohead, Busta Rhymes and A Certain Ration. Déclassé, his own imprint is also home to 2014's critically acclaimed  Saudade and the upcoming (and brilliant)  Everliving LP.

"We Start Over" is an International Feel baby though - the result of Cobby and vocalist Trudie Dawn Smith combining for a bout of Balearic bliss. The ‘Private Acid Mix’ comes from two of house music's current treasures, Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer a.k.a Tuff City Kids, holding nothing back and dropping the 303 in a fine style with looped and twisted vocal snippets.

Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named ‘Rojus’, that Linus told me translated as ‘Paradise’. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on to a National Geographic documentary named ‘Designed To Dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise. As I watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. This gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat. Thus, Rojus.
