Rush Hour Store Mixes

It's aways a blast to have Quentin Vandewalle, better known as Zaltan, over in Amsterdam. Even better to catch up with him in Paris, where he introduces the best affordable gastronomic places in town. So, naturally, we don't dare to buy him wine for his in-store. We actually hope he has brought his own... No such thing. Blast again.

The Antinote main man started his curious imprint only a few years ago, to push the music of his friends. Friends who he mainly met at Le Baron Rouge, a colorful bar in his home town. A courageous move, which wasn't bound to fail thanks to Zaltan's refined taste. Antinote became a favorite of many, and RA's label of the month. For this mix, Zaltan the DJ selected a few summery favorites, which discloses the fact that he recorded the mix a few weeks ago, during Amsterdam's long lasting Indian summer...

Store Mix 013 | Zaltan Digs Rush Hour

Output is partly dictated by approach. After requesting Lebanese born producer, DJ and Morphine label owner Rabih Beaini for a store mix, he asks us to make the record selection for him. "It would be fun to work with tracks that are unfamiliar to me", he explains. The RH crew dug the bins and Beaini starts from scratch with approximately a hundred tracks to select from, creating cinematic, dissonant harmonies with his mixes.

Rabih Beaini is a lone voice in electronic music. As Morphosis, Beaini has been crafting away in the nether-regions of the techno underworld since the 90s. Few people thread as challenging and intriguing live shows as him, where dark wave, krautrock, post everything and techno all sit together in haunted hardware harmony. With his store mix, despite his adventurous approach, Beaini proves to be no different as a DJ.

Store Mix 014 | Rabih Beaini Digs Rush Hour

Our friend John Gómez came to the store early on a Monday morning, of course, with an amazing record bag. But he renewed his selection with fresh, stunning picks from the store for a beautiful mix...

Rush Hour NTS radio host and compiler John Gómez hosts the Rush Hour show on NTS Radio and runs the Tangent night with esteemed disco digger Nick the Record. His "Outro Tempo" compilation for Music From Memory holds a curious collection of electronic and contemporary music from Brazil. He has a restless and inquisitive ear, which has allowed him to move between many musical scenes rather than committing to any given one, which also becomes clear from the record selection for his store mix.

Store Mix 015 | John Gómez Digs Rush Hour

"So I really don't have to bring any records?", Kai Alce asked again just before coming down to the store. The rules of the game seemed pretty unusual to him, which he enjoyed a lot. The result didn't only surprise us, but also himself. After digging the bins, he selected only a few tracks he knew. It became a nicely flowing mix, which - again - displays the rich musicality of Detroit's house music tradition. And goes beyond.

Kai Alce was born in New York City, grew up in Detroit and eventually moved to Atlanta. Although last mentioned city is not particularly famous for house music, Alce is one of Atlanta's mainstays of keeping soulful house alive in the city. As well on his NDATL imprint as on Detroit based outlets as Mahogani and FXHE, Alce has released acclaimed musical house in the past decades.

Store Mix 016 | Kai Alce Digs Rush Hour

Mr. Mendel has been a RH store customer for over a decade. He pops in for listening sessions on a regular basis, yet not for hours and hours like he did a few weeks ago. The broadly inspired DJ checked the racks in many corners before he started recording. His store mix became lengthy, featuring 26 tracks.

Growing up in Amsterdam, Mendel started out in the city’s hip-hop scene. Later, when he worked at Waxwell Records, he got further introduced to many styles of music, broadening his musical horizon from Brazilian to African music, and from disco to soul to house music. Today, Mr Mendel tours extensively through Europe and beyond and releases edits on Lumberjacks in Hell, Disco Deviance and Basic Fingers.

Store Mix 017 | Mr. Mendel Digs Rush Hour

Brooklyn's skilled, genre defying hip hop producer Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna is an incredible DJ. We are honored to have him over for the next mix in the store series. 
The avid record collector usually visits record stores for hours and hours to make sure he doesn't leave anything untouched. This also happens today... During this afternoon and evening we've touched and shared a broad spectrum of releases. This mix includes 25 of his picks!

DJ Spinna began experimenting with turntables at age 11 and began his recording career in 1994 as a member of the the underground hip hop group Jigmastas. Throughout his career he has broken down musical barriers between the worlds of hip hop, house, soul and jazz working with everyone from Mos Def, Masta Ace, Pharoahe Monch and Eminem, to Eric Roberson, N'dea Davenport, and Mary Mary to Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers and Sergio Mendes.

The ever smiling South-African joined us a year ago for an in-store session as the Ata Kak bandleader, today he’s back solo for recording an in-store mix. Taking it from West-Indies spiritual afro-jazz fusion to Jorge Ben and Wally Badarou, his selection showcases some of the musical influences behind his work as a producer.

Esa Williams is an energy filled artist. The London based South African is part of a specific breed of talent challenging the electronic music scene. Drawing influences from his roots but firmly looking towards the future, he embodies a sound without limitations.

Store Mix 019 | Esa Digs Rush Hour

Phuong-Dan’s reputation as an amazing, fearless DJ showed again, when he transformed a pumping, post-Dekmantel festival RH store into a busy, but serene music documentation centre. After a short browse, the versatile DJ decided to play tidy, beautiful (sometimes even crystalline) ambient productions by contemporary artists as wel as classic cult greats.

For over a decade now, the Hamburg based DJ is both resident and host (of Gatto Musculoso)at legendary St. Pauli underground venue Golden Pudel Club. He is also strongly associated with Dusseldorf’s Salon Des Amateurs.  Phuong-Dan creates characteristic, very divergent atmospheres with his curious mixes, that go from techno, krautrock to rare disco and obscure experimental music.

Store Mix 021 | Josey Rebelle Digs Rush Hour

Arp Frique's musical output is peppered with Cape Verdean flavors and influenced by a wide array of musical styles.  We know he's a record collector too, so we were curious what he'd select in the RH store. 

Although the funky live music protagonist has only put out two records under his Arp Frique alias, he already worked with the legends Orlando Julius, Ed Motta, America Brito, Ronald Snijders and more. Peaking Lights are the great husband and wife music duo Aaron Coyes and Idris Dunis who met in San Francisco in 2006. They're revered for their psychedelic dub-pop, which they took to a whole new level with their latest album “The Fifth State Of Consciousness”, released last year. Aaron Coyes is also a notable music freak who we were very excited to receive for a store mix!

Store Mix 023 I Peaking Lights Digs Rush Hour

The infamous Denis Simachev Bar resident Lipelis out of Moscow came down to dig the bins and record a mix in the store. Lipelis was in Amsterdam for Lente Kabinet, where he joined the Red Light Radio stage for a DJ set. Beware! Mr L is a sucker for weird disco with a swirl of sleeze. However, for this mix he selected an array of sweet tracks, including a few by his friend Olefonken.

Leonid Lipelis is one of Russia's promising DJs, who is famous for his awesome Lipelis Edits in L.I.E.S's black series and much more. We heard that he dreamt of becoming Mancuso when he was little. Listening to his mixes, this story isn't as weird as it seems.

Store Mix 024 I Lipelis Digs Rush Hour

Like Jamie Tiller (who shared the Boiler Room with yours truly here, only a few days ago) once said: "Many roads lead back to Raphaël when it comes to great discoveries”. Raphaël Top-Secret has a simpler task today; to dig the bins in just one store - the Rush Hour store. Just one day before his set at Dekmantel, he warmed us up for the dance, playing records that the RH staff are, or should be familiar with.

Not afraid to push the boundaries of club music, as a DJ Raphaël can be heard moving effortlessly between everything, from Boogie, Downtempo, Rap, Reggae, Afro-Caribbean synth bangers, Ambient or Industrial dance to the deepest late 80’s and early 90’s House.

Marine Tordjmann aka OKO DJ is Brothers From Different Mothers's sister and co-founder of the wonderful Bruits De La Passion. Memphis' Mr White, who collaborated with Larry Heard in 'The Sun Can't Compare' and 'You Rock Me' in mid-2000's, recorded us a mix in the shop on a hot summer day and here’s what he had to say…

“hey whats up ya’ll .. im here in the rush hour shop in amsterdam . i pulled some records so we can see what they sound like .. im feeling relaxed today, on break from tour, its 3pm here so im just waking up. ;)..so prolly keep this set chill… i found some of my favorite records from memphis here in the shop, so i will probably set some of those in for those of you who like soul music, and some records antal handed me to listen to..so keep an ear … ..”

An amazing honor to meet this mystery man in house music. He stayed in the shop the whole afternoon and that was so much fun.

Cut and paste… The man who made an art form of DJing with Winamp returns to the Rush Hour store  to play records... Special!  In the past decades, Aardvarck’s music has been strongly influenced by J Dilla. For this recording, he dug up a few of his all-time favorites and new discoveries. 

Aardvarck aka Mike Kivits is one of Amsterdam’s most fascinating music legends, who has been strongly affiliated with Rush Hour since the very beginning of the record shop. The Den Bosch born moved to the capital during the early days of house music.

In his biography: 'Chaos Magician, Sonic Homeric Poet, Child of Medusas, The Function, Circling Vultures, Smart Bar resident' RH's two additions: 'Very Precise, Boundless Selector'.  

Chicago's longtime music collector Justin Aulis Long recently played with Interstellar Funk in one of Amsterdam’s main clubbing institutions. For the occasion of being around, he dropped by at Rush Hour Store to play a selection of sounds from a wide scope of interest. Store picks only! As usual. 

The Chicagoan is a very imaginative writer also, as he wrote the poetic words for Mutant Beat Dance their 25-track debut album-booklet, that's available for purchase online and in record stores worldwide.

To have Marcellus Pittman as our guest for a RH store mix with records he has never heard before was pretty electrifying. The living legend from Detroit took the opportunity to have a proper browse in the shop and see where it would go…  

As a production artist and selector, Pittman has helped to define an integral part of the Detroit sound. When other children were playing combat with G.I. Joe action figures in the early 80’s, Detroit native Marcellus “Malik” Pittman was playing his radio at maximum volume, listening to the sounds of “the Wizzard” and the “Electrifying Mojo”, in addition to the jazz outputs of Rosetta Hines.

In 1993, Malik released his initial work of production with local Hip-Hop collective “Home Grown”. Shortly thereafter, he released “Essential Selections, Vol. 1” on the Sound Signature label, headed by Theo Parrish. In 1998, Malik forged a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, collectively known as the 3 Chairs. Pittman is currently heading his own label, Unirhythm, which will release his upcoming projects.

For our latest store mix, we had Jan Schulte, aka Bufiman coming over to the store, who just released his 'Albumsi' on Dekmantel. 

Jan Schulte/Bufiman is a discjockey, producer, dancer and record enthusiast from Düsseldorf, Germany. Being resident at the infamous 'Salon des Amateurs', and musical host of far out experimental single-club parties he formed his percussive and enthusiastic way to bring ritual flow to the dancefloor.
