He is the owner of one of the best record stores (dare we say, in the world?) and his life is 100% dedicated to music - whatever genre or mood, Mika Snickars always delivers something extraordinary. For Stora Skuggan, Mika put together three hours of music collected from his travels in Asia. The vibe here is a compact funk odyssey consisting of performers who seem to give their all: either they are oozing of vaseline lens-seductiveness, or display that particular larger than life-attitude which is only to be found in the 1970- and 80’s music era. Enjoy our first mix of 2024!

Coming through with a deep ride mix to start the year in the best way, we are glad to present the florentine Dj, Selector and @angismusic boss @samuelepagliai 🇮🇹
 
Active as a DJ since 2009, Samuele Pagliai boasts a ten-year experience as resident of the Florentine party @lattexplus where he plays alongside the best international artists. A devoted music digger, his appetite for new sounds has no bounds, and his taste constantly evolves. Deep house, soulful, dub, funk and techno are just a few of the genres you can hear during his sets. With this same approach, in 2017, he founded Angis Music, an independent record label dedicated to the publication of music produced by emerging and established artists from all over the world. In addition to overseeing the label’s A&R, he organizes events and exclusive listening sessions throughout Italy to create intimate spaces for the exchange of music and culture. Over the years, he has been invited to play some of the most prestigious clubs on the peninsula, such as Dude Club, Bunker, Link, Magick Bar, and Vicious, while at the same time building his experience abroad by playing in Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain and Germany. Moreover, he has participated in radio shows such as Hessle Audio on Rinse FM, State Of Rhythm on Worldwide FM, NTS, and Universal Rhythms Radio, where he curates his own program and continues to gain recognition in the European scene.

NEW MIXX! And what a midtempo spectacle. 

Helsinki-based dj & producer DENZEL https://soundcloud.com/denzelmyman jumped in the HRD booth one Friday night, equipped with an FX unit and an inspired selection of heavy midtempo jams. 

Running underground clubs & festivals keeps the man busy, but he is a selector at heart – and you can hear that. The outcome here is trippy in the best possible way – bordering psychedelic at times. Effects are dubby, rhythms are chuggy and the tempos stay south of 110 throughout.

Além de ser DJ, ele vende regularmente seus trabalhos localmente na @globespinners Record Fair e carrega algumas de suas descobertas em seu canal no YouTube. 

Este mix de duas horas explora a ensolarada África do Sul, as hipnóticas Baleares, o escaldante House e as músicas estranhas do Experimental Club, com breves excursões ao Japão e uma homenagem a Frankie Knuckles para garantir.

Phuong-Dan’s reputation as an amazing, fearless DJ showed again, when he transformed a pumping, post-Dekmantel festival RH store into a busy, but serene music documentation centre. After a short browse, the versatile DJ decided to play tidy, beautiful (sometimes even crystalline) ambient productions by contemporary artists as wel as classic cult greats.

For over a decade now, the Hamburg based DJ is both resident and host (of Gatto Musculoso)at legendary St. Pauli underground venue Golden Pudel Club. He is also strongly associated with Dusseldorf’s Salon Des Amateurs.  Phuong-Dan creates characteristic, very divergent atmospheres with his curious mixes, that go from techno, krautrock to rare disco and obscure experimental music.

Memphis' Mr White, who collaborated with Larry Heard in 'The Sun Can't Compare' and 'You Rock Me' in mid-2000's, recorded us a mix in the shop on a hot summer day and here’s what he had to say…

“hey whats up ya’ll .. im here in the rush hour shop in amsterdam . i pulled some records so we can see what they sound like .. im feeling relaxed today, on break from tour, its 3pm here so im just waking up. ;)..so prolly keep this set chill… i found some of my favorite records from memphis here in the shop, so i will probably set some of those in for those of you who like soul music, and some records antal handed me to listen to..so keep an ear … ..”

An amazing honor to meet this mystery man in house music. He stayed in the shop the whole afternoon and that was so much fun.

Store Mix 028 I Mr White Digs Rush Hour

Cut and paste… The man who made an art form of DJing with Winamp returns to the Rush Hour store  to play records... Special!  In the past decades, Aardvarck’s music has been strongly influenced by J Dilla. For this recording, he dug up a few of his all-time favorites and new discoveries. 

Aardvarck aka Mike Kivits is one of Amsterdam’s most fascinating music legends, who has been strongly affiliated with Rush Hour since the very beginning of the record shop. The Den Bosch born moved to the capital during the early days of house music.

Store Mix 029 I Aardvarck Digs Rush Hour

In his biography: 'Chaos Magician, Sonic Homeric Poet, Child of Medusas, The Function, Circling Vultures, Smart Bar resident' RH's two additions: 'Very Precise, Boundless Selector'.  

Chicago's longtime music collector Justin Aulis Long recently played with Interstellar Funk in one of Amsterdam’s main clubbing institutions. For the occasion of being around, he dropped by at Rush Hour Store to play a selection of sounds from a wide scope of interest. Store picks only! As usual. 

The Chicagoan is a very imaginative writer also, as he wrote the poetic words for Mutant Beat Dance their 25-track debut album-booklet, that's available for purchase online and in record stores worldwide.

Store Mix 030 I Justin Aulis Long Digs Rush Hour

To have Marcellus Pittman as our guest for a RH store mix with records he has never heard before was pretty electrifying. The living legend from Detroit took the opportunity to have a proper browse in the shop and see where it would go…  

As a production artist and selector, Pittman has helped to define an integral part of the Detroit sound. When other children were playing combat with G.I. Joe action figures in the early 80’s, Detroit native Marcellus “Malik” Pittman was playing his radio at maximum volume, listening to the sounds of “the Wizzard” and the “Electrifying Mojo”, in addition to the jazz outputs of Rosetta Hines.

In 1993, Malik released his initial work of production with local Hip-Hop collective “Home Grown”. Shortly thereafter, he released “Essential Selections, Vol. 1” on the Sound Signature label, headed by Theo Parrish. In 1998, Malik forged a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, collectively known as the 3 Chairs. Pittman is currently heading his own label, Unirhythm, which will release his upcoming projects.

For our latest store mix, we had Jan Schulte, aka Bufiman coming over to the store, who just released his 'Albumsi' on Dekmantel. 

Jan Schulte/Bufiman is a discjockey, producer, dancer and record enthusiast from Düsseldorf, Germany. Being resident at the infamous 'Salon des Amateurs', and musical host of far out experimental single-club parties he formed his percussive and enthusiastic way to bring ritual flow to the dancefloor.
