Chapters 11-13: Still Water - Summary

Chapter 11 "Light as a Feather": Summoned to Lucien's quarters, Mira discovers he found the Nimwe feather hidden in her trinket box—her father unwittingly granted him access to their home. Lucien's supernatural ability to detect magic makes denial impossible. When Mira attempts to deny knowledge, Lucien threatens to plant the feather in Kat's home, resulting in her immediate Forsaking and certain death. The chapter culminates in his ultimatum: marry him to prove devotion to Zenith's Light, or watch Kat die for a crime she didn't commit. The "proposal" is "a command wrapped in the illusion of choice," using Mira's love for Kat as the ultimate weapon.

Chapter 12 "Still Water": At the pier, Mira finds even nature corrupted—the wind has vanished, the ocean lies unnaturally still. When Kat arrives asking about Lucien's meeting, Mira is forced to perform excitement about the proposal, unable to reveal it's coercion without endangering her friend. Kat's joy demonstrates her complete conversion and inability to recognize Mira's distress. The chapter portrays Mira's psychological fracturing as she maintains the facade while internally "splintering into a thousand irreparable shards."

Chapter 13 "In the Eyes of Zenith": The forced wedding unfolds as public spectacle while masking private battle. During vows, Mira demonstrates resistance by crafting double-meaning responses—"I give myself to you, as the dawn yields to the day" (knowing dawn doesn't choose to yield). Lucien's vows reveal explicit ownership: "from this day forward, you are mine." The ceremony concludes with a forehead kiss as symbolic claiming.
