International Dawn Chorus Day 2022

The quality on this bird is another level! Every sound they make just seems to be the perfect balance of intricate detail and smooth tonality. There's no wonder other birds try to mimic the sound of Nuthatches as they have mastered this sound. Simple, but perfect.

Every year I record Chaffinch singing, and I'm pretty sure I'm hearing subtle differences between the Chaffinch in my area, in comparison to other areas I've recorded them. It's difficult to describe but I'm sure it's some sort of local dialect difference that I can't seem to find any research on. Research has been done in other species, such as Yellowhammer, but I'm sure that this happens more often than not between localised populations. This is from an upland site, and whilst they do have a variety of difference phrases that they switch between, they all seem to differ on the middle section of each phrase. It's subtle, but this upland population seem to emphases this middle section in a unique way, but they also sweep down in pitch. I'll revisit this in a blog I think. Need to travel to more locations to confirm this.

Chaffinch Song Uplands - MixPre - 6308

Spring came a while ago now with many 'firsts' but it's always special when you hear your first proper exotic vagrant species and it doesn't get more out of the ordinary than this species for me. The Grasshopper Warbler was always one of those make believe birds for me when I was a kid as how could there possible be a bird that sounds like a Grasshopper but then I heard one for the first time on the Gwent Levels and could not believe my ears, I was so excited and even now it always gives me a boost when I hear one reeling away from bramble patches.

Morning At The Lake, April 2023, 2 Schwarzkehlchen (Stonechat)

The pre-dawn sounds of a remote mire in Dartmoor National Park. Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) are performing their "winnowing" courtship display, flying up and diving downwards so their tail feathers vibrate with a distinctive thrumming sound. A Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) sings loudly from a nearby bush.

Recorded on 25th April 2023 with 2 x AT4022 microphones in an Olson stereo array (https://www.trackseventeen.com/mic_rigs.html) and a Sound Devices 722 recorder.

A Dartmoor Mire Dawn

An hour before sunrise in a secluded valley mire in Dartmoor National Park. Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) are performing their "winnowing" courtship display, flying up and diving downwards so their tail feathers vibrate with a distinctive thrumming sound. Tawny Owls and Cuckoo call across the valley.

Recorded on 1st May 2023 with 2 x AT4022 microphones in an Olson stereo array (www.trackseventeen.com/mic_rigs.html) and a Sound Devices 722 recorder.

May Day Snipe

It's only the first day of February, but already the dawn chorus is starting to build up in this wet woodland at the head of a small reservoir in Dartmoor National Park.
