I — Black-Glass Arrival

The first thing that touched the hull was not debris, not dust, not ice.

It was meaning.

A thin drizzle of obsidian pollen drifted across the void like night-snow. Each fleck was a seed of collapsed language, older than any star that still bothered to burn. The pollen did not stick to metal. It stuck to intent. It found the vessel’s purpose and clung there, as if recognizing a shape it once wore.

The ship—if ship was the right word—glided without sound. Its body was carved from meteor-glass, a translucent stone that held faint inner thunderstorms. Resin seams stitched its panels together like bone-white veins. Along its spine, a braided tether trailed behind, not tethered to anything visible, but to a point in the past that refused to let go.

Through the forward canopy, space looked wrong. Not hostile—incongruent.

Ahead hung a structure too large for the mind to accept in one glance: a ring of braided calcified moonlight studded with faintly glowing gills, like the underside of a colossal mushroom cap turned inside out and made architectural. It rotated slowly, but not around a single axis; it rotated around possibility, the way a question rotates around an answer it suspects is lying.

This was the edge of the Mycelial Loom—the living archive that grew across realities, knitting them together by filaments of luminous fungus and vow-engraved light.

In the heart of that Loom, rumor said, a relic turned. A lens-coin older than empires, minted from memory itself.

The Anamnesis Dial.

The heist began with a breath held for something that did not require air.

At the helm stood a figure that was neither purely flesh nor purely fabrication: Kael Oris, a Mirrorkin of the Veil-Dynasties. Their form was slender, robed in a mantle of brittle light that cracked softly with each shift of posture. Beneath the robe was an obsidian-lacquer body threaded with slow green veins that pulsed like algae in deep water. Where a face might have been was a reflective plate—smooth, oval, and blank—except for a faint spiral sigil at the brow, glowing cyan when Kael thought too sharply.

Kael’s eyes were not visible. Their gaze existed as a pressure in the air.

Behind Kael, suspended in a cradle of filament mesh, waited the crew.

Not companions. Not friends. Instruments.

There was Sirr Vant, a moth-seraph made of stained-glass plates and hinge-bones, with wings that carried compass roses instead of patterns. Each beat of those wings shed tiny prismatic scales that drifted like burning snow. Sirr’s head was a lantern-cap fungus grown into the shape of a crown; its spores emitted soft teal light when Sirr spoke.
