haiku #321: Figures sculpted / on ancient temple walls / still look at us

Built up a patch in Diva that sounded quite JM-Jarre. Thought to myself, in terms of melodic, stylised synthesizer music, JMJ is a founding father. The patch, and that idea, was the seed for the track. It fell together then.

Melody came first, then harmony happened. Spent alot of time on the drum programming then, way more than I typically would.

I started the response to this haiku, but putting an image of the text into Metasynth to create sequences of sound using various custom sample instruments. A very quick and happy process ,one 90minute train trip, hope its a worthwhile listen.

“Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” has been covered countless times in the more than 150 years it’s been around.  Its history carries it back to pre-civil war days with some scholars believing that the song is a portrayal of a child being separated from parent after a slave auction.  It has been a song of sorrow and triumph for many, being used in weddings, masses, and funerals.  This particular recording was borne in 2018 out of frustration with the border crisis.  It seemed wrong to sell such a thing, so today felt like a good opportunity to set it out.

Ryan Scott Mattingly's work sets washes of noise alongside sounds from daily life creating melodic songscapes with traditional acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin, double bass),  electronics (synthesizer, pedal steel) and homemade instruments, weaving those juxtapositions into grandiose, otherworldly textures.
