Where stars drench the sky in hues of infinity, amidst the chaotic waves of supernovas, Sleem Gleam emerges from the abyss to debut a fusion of electronic rhythms and reverberated riffs that crash against the shores of reality.

Riding on a hot acid groove and descending into an electric whirlpool, “Lava Barrels at High Tide” is a stripped-back oceanside bop that epitomizes the swell. Up next, “Totally Pitted” hits maximum wetness with an iconic bass line and blazing flanged-out hats guaranteed to jostle a noggin.

On the flip side, the upbeat electro jam “Cosmic Rip Current” presents a hazard to beach-goers in the form of a thick and psychedelic stellar blip-swirl. Lobotomy Party sends it home at high speed with twacked-out vocal samples and surreal pulsating bass.

Sleem Gleam is the new surf-inspired alias of Minneapolis-based Kajunga co-founder Ry Johnson, aka Ryote. He has been making and releasing electronic music since 2007 and DJing since 2011.

@kajunga ready their first release of 2024, the debut from label co-founder Ry Johnson's new project Sleem Gleam. 'Made of Magma' serves up four scorching tracks ready to ignite the dancefloor. Where his long-running Ryote moniker shows off deep house and club sonics, Sleem Gleam hits you with high energy acid cuts that will thrust you deep into the pit, glow sticks and fog machines included.

PREMIERE : Sleem Gleam - Cosmic Rip Current

Made of Magma is out via Kajunga Records on May 17th. We hung ten with elusive clump of stardust Sleem Gleam (aka Ryote) to get up to speed on the record. 

NP: What is sleem about the gleam?

SG: That’s the slime, the squiggle, the off-kilter, the acid, the midwest grit, the tubular factor. Paired with a humble glimmer you get a wacky little combo. It’s serious in a silly way, or vice versa. The Sleem Gleam alias originally formed to be a member of the synthpop duo Slurpuff. The band inevitably didn’t release any of the tunes we were working on, but we had fun and created interesting lore around our characters. Sleem Gleam had to live on and evolve beyond that.

NP: Track A2 is “Totally Pitted.” It zips, it soars, it’s totally far out. It embodies the style of DJ sets I’ve heard you play in recent years. Overall, the project and record have a different sound than Ryote releases. Did the project form instantaneously, or did it take time for it to evolve?

SG: Totally Pitted was actually the first track I started working on within this sonic ecosystem. That was at the end of 2019. I wanted to make faster music. Banging, but not too abrasive, more like rock music or something. Most of my inspiration was coming from surf rock, new wave, and upbeat psych stuff, so I tried to combine some of those elements with a techno/electro structure I was much more used to. The bass line, zappy sounds and general structure of this track sat dormant for over a year. My friend Brandon recorded some guitar parts for it, and it had a brief phase of being a full-on surf rock track. To fit my vision a bit more accurately, I eventually reworked and paired back the guitar to let the bass line and percussion shine. The track got finalized in 2023 so I could play it at TGB, where I always aim to deejay upbeat surfy stuff.

NP: Should we anticipate more from both Ryote and Sleem Gleam? Will the projects co-exist?

SG: They’ll definitely co-exist. As my tastes as an artist have grown and changed, I’ve alway been fine with simply expanding what Ryote can be, whether that’s fast, slow, art, music. It all intersects for me. The concept and mythos behind Sleem manifested itself so quickly that it demanded to be its own thing, truly an alter-ego. The essence of the project needs to stay pure and concise. I have more Sleem tracks to release, and I definitely wanna ride the wave as long as I can.

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor’s 2011 poll of the world’s Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine’s Best of British 2011 Awards.

Earlier this year Scuba released his ‘Adrenalin’ EP, picking up radio plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank as well as Mistajam, illustrating how his sound has mutated into previously unexplored areas. Alongside ‘Adrenalin, Scuba also released his addition to K7!’s DJ-KICKS series which has made notable appearances on several "Best of 2011" lists.

On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut 'Flash Addict', ‘The Hope’ will proceed the album on the 6th February.

Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, 'A Mutual Antipathy' in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012.

Scuba’s second album, 'Triangulation', was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster.

With ‘Personality’ due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose's constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.
