Almost 20 years ago Jürgen De Blonde debuted on KRAAK with the nowadays unfindable and almost visionary album köhn 1. It was the starting point for a vital and wondrous exploration that lead him over paths of glitch, idm, shoe gaze, hypnagogic pop, improvised music, straight forward synth music, field recordings and kraut. 

In the middle of this ungraspable adventure through contemporary electronic music, Köhn stands as a genuine artist that stayed true to the curious spirit of the DIY knob twiddling and boggling boy he once was. 

KRAAK is proud to present his 7th album on KRAAK — Kreis Plön, which documents and envisions 20 years of exploring. It’s an album that is about a fusion of the past and the future, of separation and reconfiguration, of mourning and rejoicing, of noise and peace. Kreis Plön is about geolocation. It’s about probable fiction and looking for bits of different puzzles that fit together. An exercise in linear and perpendicular coherence devoid of any objective logic. 

In the middle of the album an artist is envisioning his place in the Now, questioning how or when he got there, as he links memories to imaginary places, and real places to imaginary histories. Kreis Plön stands as such a masterpiece that bluntly envisions the future of electronic music.

You can imagine John Peel’s hurriedly inaccurate summation of a cold and unforgiving Swedish winter as he juxtaposes the big-jumper-like welcoming warmth of Hater. Their lush and tempered guitars are an almost Marr-approved Smiths-like foil for Caroline Landahl’s beautifully accented and accentuated vocal – it’s a heartwarming brew.

“We know little of their home town, Malmo,” Peel might have mused, caught up in Hater’s minor chord world weariness, “other than that Roy Hodgson had a particularly successful time there… probably long before this young four-piece were actually born.”

Indeed. Hater are new to the game. This year’s well-received debut album, ‘You Tried’ earned comparisons to Alvvays, The Pretenders and even Jefferson Airplane, eclectic for sure, but that’s just incidental.

Their new EP distinguishes their very own super polished and intricate guitar-led dreamy pop. Featuring their first single for Fire, the wonderfully forlorn and truly lovesick ‘Blushing’ (we’ve all been there) and ‘Rest’ with its haunting monosyllabic guitar break, a super-clean chiming motif that seems like a closing salvo before it regains momentum and brings proceedings to a suitable climax, welcoming back Landahl for one last chorus.

The echoey eeriness of ‘Red Blinders’ could have come right out of the bubble blowing indie pop hey days of the early ‘80s, while ‘Penthouse’ is a chunkier c86 groove with a wind blowing through its motorik rhythm.

If you simultaneously pull the correct two albums from the wall-to-wall collection, the wall spins in true Hammer Horror style to reveal a secret passage that leads to the Lost Library, an eclectic shadowy domain where the audio is unique and ubiquitous. This isn’t music found on the high street – it’s a secret passion purveyed by those lost in sound in need of a soundtrack beyond Spotify.

In the Lost Library you will find music like nothing else. Take three examples:

The first from this exotic space features an eerie homage to a private press album that’s unobtainable, Danish and created by the hands of a man responsible for fermenting new age music, the mysterious Klaus Schønning. He produced Suzanne Menzel’s long lost ‘Goodbyes And Beginnings’ album in 1981. It’s a pre-genre dreampop variation delivered by Virginia Wing joined by the wonderful Jane Weaver. A marriage of meandering majesty.

That is followed by the menacing ambience of John Carpenter’s self-penned opening mélange to his claustrophobic epic The Thing delivered by the evocative sepulchral string-bending drone of Noveller. It’s a sound that represents the brooding human-inhabiting menace that The Thing’s cast unlock when an alien catapulted to earth finally thaws out. No-one is safe.

And, to conclude, why not re-imagine tradition; think what would happen if you took a song of Aaron-sweatered folk legend and turned it into a piece of echoey soft-to-the-touch analogue minimalism. You might add esoteric instrumentation, take nothing for granted and deliver the iconic guitar virtuoso Bert Jansch’s ‘Moonshine’ as an all-new glinting piece of melancholy. Too late, Swedish duo, Death And Vanilla has already done it. And it’s a haunting three minutes that never evaporates.

Rat Columns is the ever changing musical project of David West and friends. West is involved in other groups such as Rank/Xerox and Liberation, was a member of Total Control and Lace Curtain, and in recent years has released 2 eponymous solo LP's. Rat Columns emerged from the desert outpost of Perth, Western Australia in the late 2000s, influenced by largely anglocentric forms such as post-punk and jangle pop,  and has developed over time with an array of different friends from the USA and Australia, emitting a jet stream of 7”s, EPs and three full length albums along the way.

The third full length LP "Candle Power" was released in 2017, a mix of indie pop, post-punk and disco. The songs included on the "Sometimes We're Friends" EP were recorded at the same time as "Candle Power" in Guildford, Western Australia, in a back shed studio on a rambling riverside property. Beyond West, the Australian Rat Columns line-up of Perth underground luminaries, Amber Gempton, Louis Hooper and Chris Cobilis is featured, as well as musical wunderkind Cohen Bourgault guesting on violin. This recording sees Rat Columns dancing around classicist, German-influenced propulsive guitar pop on 'Sometimes We're Friends', an indie pop gossamer ballad involving an 'Astral Lover', and an unusual diversion into downer, vaguely Young-esque dirge rock on the cheery 'Waiting To Die'. This is the first Rat Columns release on the long-running, Bay Area-based Slumberland imprint.

Filmed over a month in California, Arizona and Texas and shot on a small handheld cinema camera, the band travels across America in a white mustang convertible searching and reaching into the unknown."
