At long last a spotlight is shone on NWW and C93 affiliate Diana Rogerson with Optimo’s maiden vinyl and digital edition of her hallucinatory, previously CD-only, 2007 album, co-produced/engineered by her bandmates (and former husband) Steven Stapleton with Colin Potter, plus irr. app. (ext.)’s Matt Waldron

Of cultish repute due to her unsettling 1985 solo debut ‘The Inevitable Chrystal Belle Scrodd Record’, Diana Rogerson hails among the true matriarchs of original industrial musick with a discography that begins in early ‘80s extreme noise act Fistfuck and spans dozens of credits for NWW’s United Dairies and the legendary likes of L.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords and Dirter. An early encounter with her work via a mention in Smash Hits would twig a 12 year old JD Twitch to her work, and subsequently the whole NWW microcosm she was instrumental within, leading to JD’s lifelong obsession with industrial musick and its secretive binds with underground sound. It’s fair to say that beyond the most ardent industrialists, Rogerson’s work hasn’t received the retrospective acclaim afforded to many others of her cohort, but this reissue should hopefully rectify that matter and leave an indelible impression on newcomers, while jogging the traumas/memories of original industrial fiends. 

Although naturally bearing traces of her early work, ‘The Lights are On But No-One’s Home’ finds Diana subtly adapting her moniker and adopting a more sensuous sound decades later, after she had raised a family in the rural west of Ireland. In terms of her spoken word delivery and the musick’s shapeshifting backdrops, we can’t help but hear this album as a precedent for the wanderings of Teresa Winter or her near namesake in Laila Sakini’s Princess Diana of Wales, with Rogerson’s lyrics conjuring richly occultist imagery matched by the slow-burn swirl of vaporous electronics and her nose for oneiric, extended melody. From the dream-breaching drone opener ‘Behind the Curtain of the Sun’, thru the mutant exotica of ‘Cupboard Re-Nude’ or ‘Mother’, to a cover of Ash Ra Tempel’s ‘Asphalt Kiss’, the guttural thrum of ‘Mirage Man’, and her 15 minute parting piece of collaged inception, ‘Chant D’Amour/Da Mort’; it’s not hard to hear why JD Twitch saw fit to give this album a 2nd lease of life, and likewise hear Diana as an original priestess of England’s Hidden Reverse.

On May 25th 2024, to accompany the launch of his Arthur Russell book "Travels Over Feeling" Richard King put together an event at London's Barbican celebrating Arthur's life with an all star musical cast recreating and reimagining his music.

I was thrilled to be invited to play a DJ set in the foyer afterwards. I have been an Arthur Russell devotee for 30 years and decided to play an all Arthur Russell DJ set*. The atmosphere was very special with lots of love transmitting back and forth from the DJ booth to the dancefloor. I really felt a freedom to slowly build it up playing so many of my favourite AR tracks and it was one of my very favourite DJ gis of 2024 so far.


*Full disclosure - there was an additional 30 minutes finale of this set that didn't record where I played non Arthur Russell, disco / disco adjacent records.

Soda Gong is pleased to present a razor sharp collection of rigorous and imaginative new music from Moscow-by-way-of-St. Petersburg-based musician and producer Flaty. “Generic TARGZ” places Flaty’s precipitously complex drum programming and keen ear for atmosphere and space at the forefront, offering up a dynamic array of techno, ambient, generative footwork, and other tougher to pigeonhole rhythmic experiments. It is a dizzying and cohesive document in which ethereal productions, such as “Praaai” wherein a bewitching vocal pad hovers over delicate, pin-prick percussion, sit comfortably alongside tightly controlled chaos, as with the synapse-knotting "Thread" and heavy-hitting “Horn of Plenty.” Over the past few years, Flaty has released a wealth of diverse and uniformly excellent music under monikers such as AEM Rhythm Cascade, Dada Ques, and Wrong Water. He is most closely associated with the influential GOST ZVUK label, but his work has also appeared on imprints such as 12th Isle, Muscut, and his own ANWO Records. Although Flaty serves as his primary alias, "Generic TARGZ" is only the artist's second full-length under the moniker, following 2016's "New Suggestions," a high-water mark in the impeccable GOST ZVUK catalog. Mastered by Rashad Becker at D&M.
