Samy 2k & Valen - Let It Fade

I think I’ve always been insecure about my voice even though I ironically find time to post small covers on instagram. But actually recording a full song always scared me because my insecure little heart kept picking at the flaws of my voice. I can’t reach high notes, I can’t do riffs exceptionally, and I definitely can’t belt without having my voice crack. 

And it felt like I was always drowning in these shades of blue.

This song was meant to inspire others to love themselves and believe that they can do whatever it is they put their mind to. Ever since I came out 2 years ago with my sister, I’ve learned to love who I am and what I have. I may not be the most amazing singer, dancer, or filmmaker, but learning to do all the things I love for ME is something I know is more important than trying to be better than the girl next door.

I always wrote this in honor of Pride Month. I know how it feels to be scared of being who you are for fear of the lack of conformity you’ll possess. But that shouldn’t matter when it comes to living your life for YOU. Be proud of who you are and show the world because you are undoubtedly a beautiful soul. For those who are waiting to come out, do so when you’re ready. It’s ok. Don’t let anybody take away that moment from you.

just before aaliyah passed away, she sent her well wishes to mariah carey (she was always a huge fan) - who was undergoing a hard time personally and in the media. just two weeks later, aaliyah was no longer here on earth, and it was mariah carey who reached out to aaliyah's fans on her website. maybe that's why this combination of sonics hits me so hard. it's ethereal, beautiful, with a hip hop touch. i really wish they could have collaborated. 

i've had the idea to mix mariah carey's 'the distance' with aaliyah's 'one in a million' ever since 'caution' came out. there were never any stems for 'the distance', but tonight i made it work. i've dreamt of what it would sound like and it's BEAUTIFUL. i know i've mixed 'one in a million' plenty, but this is the only mashup to ever make me cry. i miss you so much, aaliyah.
