The First Stage: Correct intention.
Statements from the Salaf regarding the importance of sincerity and correct intention in seeking knowledge.
Ayyūb as-Sakhtiyānī on the one who seeks fame.
Ibn al-Qayyim on the high level of truthfulness.
Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī’s advice for the student of knowledge.
Nine means of attaining sincerity (in seeking knowledge):
Having the intention to worship Allāh upon insight and remove ignorance from oneself.
Knowing that seeking knowledge is worship.
Having the intention of achieving the supplication of the Messenger ﷺ.
Seeking to be raised in status with Allāh.
Hoping to be from the people of khashyah.
Reflecting upon the fact that there is reward in the sittings of knowledge.
Seeking to be from the best and most noble of people to Allāh, not the people.
Intending to transmit the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ to the one who is ignorant regarding it. 
Intending to be from those whom the creation makes du’ā/seeks forgiveness for.
The Second Stage: Listening attentively and remaining silent.
Three things the student of knowledge must incorporate:
Taking this knowledge from the scholars who benefit him.
Reading.
Researching.
A ḥadīth from the Messenger ﷺ that encourages listening attentively.
An-Nawawī and as-Sa’dī on the difference between listening attentively and remaining silent.
Attentive listening that brings about a lot of good:
Ears that are fully attentive to the one speaking.
A heart that is awake and attentive.
Contemplating on what one is hearing.
Statements from ash-Shāfi’ī and al-Aṣma’ī regarding remaining silent and listening attentively. 
Allāh’s dispraise of those who do not listen.
Those who fall short in listening (with acceptance).
The example of Mūsā (عليه السلام) regarding listening with reflection.
Wahb b. Munabbih on the etiquettes of listening.

The great importance of correct ‘Aqīdah. 
Al-Baghawī, aṭ-Ṭabarī, as-Sa’dī and Ibn Kathīr regarding Allāh’s wilāyah and Him being sufficient for His servants.  
Āyāt regarding the wilāyah of Allāh.  
That which will return strength to the Muslims.
Having firm belief that nothing can stand in the way of Allāh’s Aid.
The promise of Allāh that He will wage war against those who show enmity to His awliyā.
How the Prophets met their problems/hardships. 
The need to constantly beg Allāh for thabāt (steadfastness).
Āyāt that show the truth is one and the deviant paths are numerous.
The darkness of kufr and shirk.
Reflecting upon our state before we were guided. 
The darkness of ignorance.
Carrying this knowledge with sincerity and how self-amazement can destroy a person.
Glad tidings for the awliyā of Allāh in this life and the hereafter. 
What our intention should be when seeking knowledge. 
Benefits from the āyah, “Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men, like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Thus it is made fair-seeming to the disbelievers that which they used to do.” [Sūrah al-An’ām 6:122]
The outcome of insincerity.
Striving to be a person who calls to good.
