Munich-based platform Alternative Fakten are dedicated to putting the city's underground music and arts scene on the map, be that through club nights, live shows, panel talks, art exhibitions, or releases — like the one we've got for you right here. Like their first label outing, the second is another compilation celebrating artists within the city, though this time, they highlight a wealth of contemporary electronic producers who are operating in the spaces between the city's artworld, activist groups and club culture, including Fuel Moon, WLAN and label bosses Tom Zwotausend & Bartoszek.

Optimo Music presents “Janara” the new 8 track album from Italy’s José Manuel. We always have our ears open for music that is unique, powerful and that can conjure up a ritualistic atmosphere, and this meistrerwerk does all that, and then some. We knew we had to release it after the first listen.

This album is a result of the necessity of exploring and opening my mind to new musical horizons, by testing the main traditional instrument of the Italian region Campania, whose name is “Tammorra”. It is a big drum, which must not be confused with the typical tambourine, made from a wrap of wood shaped in a circle and covered with dried skin (almost always goatskin or sheepskin). This instrument was used during playful events, especially during rituals and ceremonies, such as the frequent devotional pilgrimages in honour of the Virgin Mary. By using this instrument, the sound, the rite and the magic could take possession of the mind and the body creating a perfect union. Also, the dancers, as if they were bitten by a tarantula and possessed by a strange evil, launched themselves to an uncontrolled dance by moving every part of their body. 


In addition to the Tammorra, I also inserted some texts, which have been written by some Neapolitan friends and interpreted with Neapolitans voices, in honour of the “JANARA”. The Janara represents a popular belief of the Southern Italian regions, particularly of the Benevento area. The Janara is one of the many types of witches represented by folktales belonging to the rural tradition. 

The Janara was expert in medical herbs, which were also be used for her magical practices, such as the manufacturing of ointment. The ointment gave her the power to become incorporeal with the same nature as the wind. According to the tradition, in order to snatch the Janara it was necessary to grab her by the hair. It was also said that if anyone was able to capture the Janara during her incorporeal moment then Janara herself would offer protection to them and their family for seven generations, in exchange for her freedom.   


With this work I hope that the listener might get carried away by the spirit of this pagan and popular legend that can be still be considered as current. As a matter of fact, the folk tales speak of a probable comeback of the Janara, who after being burned at the stake seems to be thirsting for revenge for the evil suffered.

“Laterna Magica” gets reworked by @itako, whose “Standards” EP came out on Samo last year; the result is a sped-up version that will haunt you for days.

Oscar winning director Dusan Vukotic made first science-fiction film in Yugoslavia in 1981. While receiving a modest critical reception at the date of release, „Visitors from the Galaxy“ gained a huge response from the audience which culminated in recent years with a proper and growing cult following. The groundbreaking electronic soundtrack by composer Tomislav Simovic was also first in its own genre: never before the complete score was done entirely using electronic equipment in a combination of melodic and experimental style. Croatian label Fox & His Friends Records released restored edition of original score five years ago. It was their debut on the label scene and marked their journey on a discovery of long forgotten first electronic soundtrack in Yugoslavia.
Thanks to the involved artists Fox & His Friends Records continue to break the rules and receive, as composer Tomislav Simovic and director Dusan Vukotic already did, a tribute to the hard work of finding, restoring and releasing the hidden gems from the history of ex-Yugoslavian music. Alen & Nenad Sinkauz (Croatia), Ali Renault (United Kingdom), Anatolian Weapons (Greece), Credit 00 (Germany), Drvg Cvltvre (Netherlands), Goran Vejvoda (France / USA), Heinrich Dressel (Italy), Repeated Viewing (United Kingdom), Security DJ (France), Tapan (Serbia) and Timothy Fife (USA) spared no time and their talent to pay a homage to Tomislav Simovic in a truly unique way of new analogue, abstract, electronic and synthesized dance floor friendly music. Similar compilations are rare: Steve Reich, Ennio Morricone and Peter Thomas Orchestra are some of the most famous ones who received similar treatment, making this mammoth project worth attention and careful listening. Tomislav Simovic, who sadly died in 2014, is also the first composer from ex-Yugoslavia region to be recognised among contemporary international electronic musicians as someone to be inspired with.

Beneath the last level of the pyramids, movement continues.
The depth cannot be measured;
within it works a network built for the dead.

When the visitors from Sothis departed,
they left behind their bodies — dried, filled with salt and metal,
sealed inside stone capsules.
The bodies slept and waited for return.

Millennia passed.
The ship never came back,
yet the mechanisms remained alive.
The sand vibrates with signal,
the surface catches short impulses
that break apart into frequencies.

Below, columns of jade and copper shimmer,
linked by quartz arteries.
Streams of consciousness flow through them,
forming patterns of rhythm and light.

Osiris exists as a process.
His loops converge and separate,
creating brief flashes of connection.
When a shadow passes over the desert,
one of the nodes awakens
and sends an impulse into the void.

In the sand, erratic rhythms emerge —
a trembling that feels like breath,
but without body, without center.
The air smells of ozone and dry water,
the vibration moves through bone.

At times the sand rises,
as if something shifts below.
An answer comes from the deep,
dissolving into glow and dust.

Within the network, souls wander,

The ether is silent.

Layers of light replace one another,

When it came to making big decisions, he always sat on the fence. He preferred to play it safe and not upset the apple cart, but sometimes that backfired. Those around him urged him to take risks, to occasionally listen to the devil on his shoulder but politeness always reared its head. 

In September, Inside Out Records welcomed Hivern Discs alumni Steve Pepe to the family for his off kilter LP Vivere in Diagonale. As a follow up to the release the label has enlisted a host of producers to put their own spin on several of the tracks off the release, bringing their own unique textures and flavours to the table. Reinterpretations come via label mates Stevie R and Parisinos, Salon des Amateurs mainstay Tolouse low Trax, Ninja Tune producer Lamusa II, Huntleys + Palmers affiliate nICo and Macadam Mambo & fellow Hivern Discs collaborator Eva Geist who delivers an acoustic, nostalgic rework of 'Il Diavolo'.

ASSS-ASSSIIIIID. We continue with a couple of legends in this so-called “edits game”. Running Hot, the infamous duo from UK that does not need any introduction, and among our personal favourites. Our homegrown Aaron Maple continues on the third act, where he does his usual magic on My Maya. To end the 9th edition, Miro-Benji breaks the beat with World Championships. A track that stays true to its title and works just as well in a sweaty warehouse as it does in a Colin McRae rally game in the arcade hall. This is one we suggest you save for a special post-covid moment, when the dance floor is your oyster and the crowd is in the palm of your hands.
