Many thanks - I've now ordered a windjammer directly from Rycote who've been updating their designs - for an Olympus LS-100 recorder.  It was hard to find one for this model!

Rob St John’s 'Surface Tension' LP was made over the course of a year spent walking, recording and photographing the Lea Valley in East London. An electric-pastoral shimmer of field recordings, analogue synths, fingerpicked guitars, tape loops, tube organs and submerged rhythms, the record was originally released as two limited book/CD editions (which both sold out swiftly), and is now reissued on vinyl for the first time.

We’ll be releasing 'Surface Tension' on Friday 14th May 2021. Limited to 300 copies, each uniquely pressed on 12” eco-mix vinyl.

Rob is a musician, artist and writer based in rural Lancashire. In 2014 he was commissioned by Benjamin Fenton from the Thames21 Love the Lea charity to create a project documenting pollution, life and biodiversity through the Lea Valley’s changing environment. Rob – who plays in kosmiche folk-rock band Modern Studies (FIRE Records), has a string of critically-acclaimed solo releases, has installed artworks at Tate Modern, The Barbican and The Victoria and Albert Museum and had his work profiled on BBC Radio 3, 4 and 6 Music – used a variety of innovative sound and visual art techniques drawing from the local environment to create 'Surface Tension'.

Nigel Mullaney for many years has lived a life of relative musical anonymity preferring to inhabit the worlds of soundtrack and library music. Whilst he has been involved with several other collaborative musical projects it is only in the last couple of years that he has started to spread his solo musical wings with the album releases “31 Days” on DiN and “The Navigator” on Behind the Sky Music.

The last year has shown all of us how fragile our existence is and how vital it is to nurture a physical and artistic connection to creativity and those that surround us. The Turning is an album that was forged from the concepts and ideas first explored in the album “31 Days” (DiN61), a desire to capture the raw emotion of a live electronic performance coupled with the expression of Jonathan Jowett’s piano playing and Mullaneys work with the Elemental Chamber Orchestra. Modular & Moog synthesisers were used to assemble a deep sonic palette that reflects the emotional concepts of the album fused with a variety of studio sessions, acoustic recordings and Elektron machines. The tracks were all mixed on to a vintage Ampex ATR-102 using an SSL desk and numerous vintage outboard equipment. 

The 10 tracks on this album, whilst dominated by modular textures and sequences take this style of composition to new heights in their truly widescreen cinematic landscapes. The opener “Lost At Sea” is a beautiful example of how to create such a journey in under seven minutes. The following eight pieces take the listener on an emotional travelogue before succumbing to the blissful closing of the album with “Nostalgia Bomb”.

DiN label boss Ian Boddy curated the track selection and running order to create an electronic music album full of emotional complexity and hope.

Lyonel Bauchet is a well established and prolific composer, mainly working in the field of library music, with over 100 album releases in a career spanning over 40 years. Working from his studio just north of Paris he is best known in the Electronic Music world for his mastery of the Buchla modular synthesiser. Indeed his huge Buchla 200e system formed the basis for the sonic world he previously created for the DiN label with his digital only release “The Secret Society” (DiNDDL11) in 2011. Ten years later DiN label boss Ian Boddy coaxed Bauchet in to creating a new album which is this time destined for a full CD edition.

“The Diver” is a concept album in that it alludes to an undersea world many of us will never visit. The five tracks segue into a seamless piece of audio that explore the hidden vistas and dark spaces of the deep sea. Utilising his vast musical experience Bauchet has created an astonishing sound world that ebbs and flows like the ocean currents. The attention to detail and immersive sonic textures sparkle on top of vast oceanic swells that travel from the peaceful and quiet through to darkly dangerous. Once again his use of the Buchla modular is evident with beautiful soaring and trilling Vangelis like lead tones. Underneath the sequencer patterns and restrained percussion bubble & roil building to subtle climaxes before descending back in to the dark depths.

The life of a library music composer is very often rather anonymous so it is a great privilege for the DiN label to be able to present this album release from such a talented composer. Dive in to the sonic undersea world of Lyonel Bauchet and lose yourself in this stunning album.

The DiN label, established in 1999, reaches something of a milestone with “Nevermore” (DiN69) as it represents the 100th release on the esteemed British electronic music label. This equates to this, the 69th album on the main DiN imprint as well as 26 digital only releases on the DiNDDL sub-label and 5 Tone Science albums.

It seems only fitting then that this release comes from DiN label boss Ian Boddy. Performed live at DiN HQ the performance was videoed and streamed on March 27th 2021 as part of the three day Soundquest Festival. This was organised by ambient luminary Steve Roach and had an audience watching and listening of 1000+ music fans across the globe coming together in these strange days of a global pandemic. This surely inspired Boddy to conjure up a mesmerising tour de force of a live show that shows all his skills and experience built up over a life time of performing.

Boddy’s set up was centred around his large Serge modular system supplemented by three cases of Eurorack. Eschewing the presence of a laptop this allowed him to sculpt and evolve a series of engaging electronic soundscapes. Ranging from the spacey and eerie to beautifully pastoral with his Ondes Martenot style French Connection keyboard featured at several points with its hauntingly beautiful tones. Novation & Moog keyboards fill out Boddy’s arsenal of instruments and the video shows him in constant motion playing, tweaking and sculpting the hour long set. In the two rhythmic excursions “From Here To There” and “Nevermore” one can literally hear Boddy build the complex, intertwining patterns brick by brick before launching out with some inspired solo playing that can only really happen in a live performance.

Released in a limited edition digipak with beautiful artwork by Wendy Carroll this is music that not only celebrates the work of one of the UK’s leading exponents of electronic music but also the label he has curated with such love and care for the last 22 years.

City Lights

An exercise in recording the sonic depth of an open landscape. The Holly Banks Nature Reserve is located near Melverley in Shropshire and is an attempt to re-create the wetland meadows that have vanished in this riverine confluence landscape since flood defences, drainage channels and enclosure were introduced in the late eighteenth century. 

I used a Tascam DR-100 Mk II digital recorder recording via the internal mics on high gain, level 8. I also used JrF C-series hydrophones (high gain, level 10) to record sounds in the pond scrape immediately in front of the recording location. 

I placed the recorder on the ground close to reeds rustling in the wind on the edge of the pond to give foreground interest. There are three recordings layered here including a general ambience of the area in the track photo, a recording of buzzards wheeling overhead and a hydrophone recording. 

The sense of depth in the recording is aided by pheasant shooting on the Criggion Estate at the foot of the hills in the far distance, dogs barking on nearby farms, farm machinery and vehicles on the nearby lanes. 

I quite like the juxtaposition in this recording of human endeavor to manage the environment for the benefit of wildlife in the foreground, while in the background we are managing it it to shoot wildlife !

This is part of a sequence of soundscape recordings on nature reserves in mid Wales and the Welsh Marches borderland for the Safe Havens project.

JAUBI continue the Nafs journey, which commenced with the single “Satanic Nafs” (featuring the remix by legendary LA producers The Gaslamp Killer & Mophono) released in March 2021. Now JAUBI draw on the elements of North Indian classical music, Hip-Hop and modal/spiritual jazz in their debut LP entitled “Nafs At Peace”.

The journey officially began back in April 2019 when London’s multi- instrumentalist and 22a Record label boss Ed “Tenderlonious” Cawthorne and Polish pianist/composer Marek “Latarnik” Pędziwiatr of EABS/Błoto, visited the group to record in Lahore.

Together they channelled their personal struggles at that time into the two recording sessions allowing the musicians to find a spiritual path through this musical purge.

Nothing whatsoever was written down during the recording sessions - no sheet music and no song titles, which allowed the six musicians to forget about their worldly issues.

In many ways, the journey represents a struggle and an expression of gratitude and an acknowledgement that the musician's inspiration comes from a higher power. The album cover portrays the mother of JAUBI’s bandleader, tearfully praying to God to get her son through that dark period of his life.

The first step of the journey can be heard on “Satanic Nafs” which refers to the lowest level of the Self which was released 26th March 2021 through Astigmatic Records.

The album title ‘Nafs At Peace’ refers to the last purification step the self has been through. At this level, the Self no longer struggles because one has complete love of God, by becoming at peace and tranquil with God’s will. We hope all can achieve the stage of “Nafs At Peace” … Inshallah.

Hi

The tracks on here represent a mix of my ambient, electro-acoustic, experimental, soundscaping and electronic works.

The music is created on a variety of hardware and software synthesizers using Ableton 
Live for recording. Field recorded sounds are frequently added to the mix and much of the sound is heavily processed with an array of effects. 

The majority of the tracks are fairly ambient in nature and explore experimental soundscapes, but occasionally the urge to create something more beat driven, rhythmic and downright noisy takes over!

The music is inspired by the random daily events that life throws at you, landscapes, environment, atmosphere, astronomy, geology, past cultures, or just the indefinable need to make music.

I am always interested in collaborative projects with other musicians, sound artists, female vocalists and any poetry writers who would like to vocalise their works over an ambient or experimental music background, so do get in contact if you like what you hear.
