Disquiet Junto Project 0117: Naviar Junto Haiku

This week’s project involves members of the Disquiet Junto participating in another music-making community: the Naviar Haiku Project. Already members of the Junto have joined in the Naviar, and this is an opportunity to add to those ranks. Each week participants in the Naviar Haiku Project compose original pieces of music in response to a shared, provided haiku. The following are the steps for this week.

the main idea for this track was to build a patch on the eurorack modular that would involve joystick, and replicate the swype gesture with joystick

the main sound is played on Sidrassi, which has 7 wooden barres with attached piezo elements which you play by touching, pressing or simply tapping

so, another association for the task - 7 letters in the word "silence", 7 keys on Sidrassi, the way it invites you to play is by interacting with the barres, and one of the techniques is to leave your fingers on the barres and just change the pressure, something that is related to the "swype" gesture

finally, this track is about 2 people not being able to express themselves in words anymore so they have to speak in silence, using their gestures only.

the patch: Sidrassi goes through some effects, and also through some eurorack effects, including ADDAC Filterbank, which outputs envelopes based on different frequency bands. these envelopes in turn control everything else in the patch together with the joystick. the second voice is the Braids oscillator in Flute mode. joystick modulates the geometry and the air pressure parameters. i repeat the gesture for "silence" twice throughout the track.

Disquiet Junto Project 0146: Swyping Silence

The Assignment: Make a short piece of music based on a typographic symbol for the word “silence.”

In this week’s project a symbol for the word “silence” will be probed for its sonic associations. The image is available at this URL: http://goo.gl/swcNxA

As is evident in the image, this is the “Swype” gesture for the word “silence.” Swype is an alternate text-entry system in which a single stroke along the various keys that spell a word trigger the word’s appearance, in contrast with the traditional keyboarding method of typing with one keystroke after another. The resulting symbols for words can take on a certain familiarity and even a kind of enchantment as time passes and frequency of use increases. The symbol that results from the word “silence” has many characteristics, including bit not restricted to the sideways hourglass timer, the inherent asymmetry, and the mix of sharp angles and curves.

The steps for this week’s project are as follows:

one thing i wish the html5drummachine had would be mute buttons, but then again it's about the limitations in this case

(another limitation i discovered by pressing Backspace before i saved)

additional limitation was not using perc1, perc2 and crash sounds from the techno pack as i couldn't fit them in any way

some programming on the fly and also since it can switch between 2 patterns i took advantage of that

no layering, no additional processing, direct output from the browser

this week's disquiet junto is a one of those where using a modular makes it easy - with modular pretty much every session is you trying to impose your vision onto the instrument and usually ending up in the exact opposite, the instrument leading you into its own dream. one of the most important things i learned from it is to sometimes stop and listen to what the instrument itself is trying to say.

i played with the modular last night but it wasn't that interesting, so i'm going to cheat a little and post a modular track recorded 3 years ago - it is the original name though, a modular having a dream. in big part because it was one of those patches mostly playing itself with almost no interaction from me.

From the forthcoming digital album release "Objects of Dissociation Volume 1", this selection is a recent live-in-the-studio rendition of a track recorded for the "Revisionist History" CD (2016).

iBlue (Lithic Version 12 - 17)

The work is in two movements - Fraying and Prolonged. The first presents a sonic object that gradually disintegrates. The second reframes this object and slows it down, so that the process of decay is frozen, and the object appears almost immortal. The work grew out of reflections on 1 Corinthians 15 and Jiang Zhi's Love Letters (2014). In Jiang Zhi's photographs, flowers are on fire, but are not harmed by the flames.

Reframe (2017)

This is a track for Disquiet Junto group. This week's task was to create a track using only sounds from 2 tracks ("Do" and "Re") from the free solo piano album 'Screws' by Nils Frahm.

The inspiration for this track was the idea behind the album. From the description:

"Nils experienced an unfortunate accident which saw him fall from his bunk bed located directly above his studio, which resulted in a broken thumb. 
...
With four screws surgically placed inside his thumb, he started recording with his remaining 9 fingers, what later resulted in 9 intimate piano recordings."

I imagined what would happen to somebody who couldn't play music anymore, sitting by the piano many years later, trying to remember one of his tunes and trying to play it again.

For this track I cut up the original recordings and rearranged the bits in Ableton Live and then recorded it additionally processing it through BugBrand modular, Cocoquantus and A/DA Stereo Tapped Delay.

Program Note:
Cent traces, sur de vastes plaines was inspired by Anne Hébert's poem "Neige" (snow). Submerged in its poetic image, the music follows its emotional trajectory and attempts to embody it through a language of resonance, harmony, and temporalities. The work was also peripherally influenced by the novel "Kamouraska" by the same author. Both texts depict a wintery dream-scape that devolves into a fever dream peopled with hazy memories. The opening five minutes contain three musical dreams composed using a collection of altered paraphrases from other piano pieces 'about' snow. These quotations appear the way characters in these dreams do: one might have an idea of who they represent from daily life (memory) even if for some reason they do not fully resemble that person. Over the course of the piece the boundaries between dreams erode and the recurring characters' identities become increasingly distorted. Musical memories appear, disappear and intermingle, culminating in a blurred mass and then a rupture.

Commissioned by the Luba Zuk Piano Duo Composition Competition.

Les souvenirs musicaux apparaissent, disparaissent et se mélangent, menant à une masse nuageuse puis une rupture.

This is the world premiere of the new work for double-bell horn, developed during the Virtual Brass Academy with Christine Chapman and Ensemble MusikFabrik, July 2020. This performance took place on July 30th, 2020 - in Cologne.
I am indebted to Ensemble MusikFabrik and the fantastic work they did with us in introducing us to the worlds of double-bell instruments, and to the ever-expanding repertoire of new music for these instruments they are bringing to the world.

The work explores a sense of dual forces that act and react upon each other, and how the relative mediator (the performer) indeed interacts with the score, the instrument and it's two bells, and finally how the theatre of the piece - both through actions and the position of the instrument - is transmitted to the audience. In the four sections of the piece that each explore a different facet of the manipulation of the horn - first through the use of a contra-bassoon reed to produce aggressive yet fulfilling multiphonics; then in the second and third exploring the two bells and their range of possibilities. The final section condenses the instrument down to only it's single-bell form and the mute and interacts briefly with it to express a settling within the performance. Gasping, grunting, growling and grandeur are all some of the ideas explored in this short miniature.

I decided, after looking at several of Martin's paintings, that I wanted to focus on that precision repetition, the light/dark alternation, and the subtle gradations of field.

The track is an improvisation inside Live, with one instance of the Buchla Music Easel (providing the upper-register track) and one of ARP 2600 V3 (providing the lower one), with Live's BrainDance and Squishy Beat Repeat effects to put in additional emergent rhythmic effects. I potted down both synths, gradually faded them in, and then slowly tweaked the filter frequency and resonance on the ARP, gradually adding in ore modulation from the ring modulator, then slowly removing it. The Buchla's variations came from tweaking the effects following it, but basically leaving the patch alone to imitate the regular ruled lines.
