It's a great assignment as it makes you go over what was done, and it's interesting to see the overall direction changes but at the same time you have some elements that keep reappearing in later tracks... And it was also interesting to notice how some months were much more productive and some not so much - I had to make one track public as there was nothing else for that month. And it's really cool that several of the tracks selected were either done for Disquiet Junto, or were inspired by it.

Disquiet Junto Project 0104: 2013 in 60 Seconds

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2013. You will then select one 5-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen 5-second segments together in chronological order to form 1 single 1-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should preferably of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.

Disquiet Junto Project 0117: Naviar Junto Haiku

This week’s project involves members of the Disquiet Junto participating in another music-making community: the Naviar Haiku Project. Already members of the Junto have joined in the Naviar, and this is an opportunity to add to those ranks. Each week participants in the Naviar Haiku Project compose original pieces of music in response to a shared, provided haiku. The following are the steps for this week.

Step 1: This is the haiku for the 12th Naviar Haiku project entry:

“They encounter
A cathedral of ice
At the end of the world”

Step 2: Compose an original piece of music in response.

Step 3: Upload the file to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud and describe your approach and process in the text field associated with the track.

Step 4: Also consider uploading the file to the Naviar Laboratory group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Listen to other members’ tracks as they appear in the Disquiet Junto feed on SoundCloud, and comment on them when you have the time.

Additional Background: (1) At the end of every month a selection of tracks will be available on Naviar’s Bandcamp page as a pay-what-you-want album. (2) The haiku by Nite Rote. (3) The Naviar deadline is Wednesday, April 2, but this Junto project is to be completed by March 31. (4) The haiku was inspired by Werner Herzog’s documentary Encounters at the End of the World.

the main idea for this track was to build a patch on the eurorack modular that would involve joystick, and replicate the swype gesture with joystick

the main sound is played on Sidrassi, which has 7 wooden barres with attached piezo elements which you play by touching, pressing or simply tapping

so, another association for the task - 7 letters in the word "silence", 7 keys on Sidrassi, the way it invites you to play is by interacting with the barres, and one of the techniques is to leave your fingers on the barres and just change the pressure, something that is related to the "swype" gesture

finally, this track is about 2 people not being able to express themselves in words anymore so they have to speak in silence, using their gestures only.

the patch: Sidrassi goes through some effects, and also through some eurorack effects, including ADDAC Filterbank, which outputs envelopes based on different frequency bands. these envelopes in turn control everything else in the patch together with the joystick. the second voice is the Braids oscillator in Flute mode. joystick modulates the geometry and the air pressure parameters. i repeat the gesture for "silence" twice throughout the track.

Disquiet Junto Project 0146: Swyping Silence

The Assignment: Make a short piece of music based on a typographic symbol for the word “silence.”

In this week’s project a symbol for the word “silence” will be probed for its sonic associations. The image is available at this URL: http://goo.gl/swcNxA

As is evident in the image, this is the “Swype” gesture for the word “silence.” Swype is an alternate text-entry system in which a single stroke along the various keys that spell a word trigger the word’s appearance, in contrast with the traditional keyboarding method of typing with one keystroke after another. The resulting symbols for words can take on a certain familiarity and even a kind of enchantment as time passes and frequency of use increases. The symbol that results from the word “silence” has many characteristics, including bit not restricted to the sideways hourglass timer, the inherent asymmetry, and the mix of sharp angles and curves.

The steps for this week’s project are as follows:

Step 2: Develop sonic associations with this symbol.

Step 3: Produce a short piece of music informed by those associations.

Disquiet Junto Project 0153: Groove Lock
The Assignment: Record a short sound intended to be set on repeat.

SoundCloud recently introduced the ability for a track to be looped on the website. That is, the listener can hit a button (details at disquiet.com/QVvCF) and the track will play over and over. This week’s project will make use of that feature. This week’s project will also, I should note, inform next week’s project. But you can do next week’s without doing this week’s, and vice-versa.

Step 1: Record a short, original piece of music/sound of between roughly 3 and 9 seconds intended to be set on repeat.

Disquiet Junto Project 0168: Three of a Kind
Create an original, multi-part piece with a single audio source.

Step 1: You will be making a single track with three different parallel lines. It might be easiest to think of them as melody, rhythm, and an ambient foundational bed, but you might also do three counterposed rhythms, or a drone of three varying ambient beds. It’s up to you.

Step 2: Select a single source of audio. Perhaps it’s a segment of pre-existing track, or a single note on a favorite instrument, or a short recording of you humming or breathing.

Step 3: Transform that single source of audio to produce each of the three separate lines you plotted in Step 1.

Step 4: Record the track with those three lines running simultaneously.

Step 5: Upload your track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

one thing i wish the html5drummachine had would be mute buttons, but then again it's about the limitations in this case

(another limitation i discovered by pressing Backspace before i saved)

additional limitation was not using perc1, perc2 and crash sounds from the techno pack as i couldn't fit them in any way

some programming on the fly and also since it can switch between 2 patterns i took advantage of that

no layering, no additional processing, direct output from the browser

This track is made with something I've been working on. It's an alternative firmware for the monome white whale eurorack module called Orca. It represents the idea of creating sequences out of preselected notes where the note played is determined by 4 tracks running on different divisions of the main clock. You can also shift them relative to each other and reset them before they reach the end. It creates these everchanging micro grooves that keep mutating.

The way it works: whichever tracks are active at the moment get added up together, but different tracks add up differently, say track 1 will add 2, and track 2 will add 5, this gives us note 7 (2+5). So combined polyrhythmic tracks create this non linear sequence that might not repeat for a long time. Not sure if this could be done with just the DAW but it should be easy to do with something like Max, Reaktor, Chuck, Processing etc. 

As for the patch itself it's all modular, Shapeshifter, Braids, Piston Honda, Echophon, Erbe Verb and ZDSP.

Disquiet Junto Project 0180: Matryoshka Music
Use the Russian nesting dolls as a model for a musical composition.

Step 1: Consider the Russian nesting doll called the matryoshka, in which hollowed-out wooden figurines are designed to be stored inside each other, excepting the smallest doll, which is solid.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music that somehow takes as its basis the doll’s structure. (For a further constraint, imagine a matryoshka consisting of 6 dolls.)

this week's disquiet junto is a one of those where using a modular makes it easy - with modular pretty much every session is you trying to impose your vision onto the instrument and usually ending up in the exact opposite, the instrument leading you into its own dream. one of the most important things i learned from it is to sometimes stop and listen to what the instrument itself is trying to say.

i played with the modular last night but it wasn't that interesting, so i'm going to cheat a little and post a modular track recorded 3 years ago - it is the original name though, a modular having a dream. in big part because it was one of those patches mostly playing itself with almost no interaction from me.

Disquiet Junto Project 0189: Tone Layer
Create a dense stack of attack-free tonal material from one audio source.

This project involves layering loops, or a loop of layers. It’s preferable that you do so with live looping, allowing the layers to accrue in real time. However, if live looping is not a capacity of yours, then feel free, certainly, to layer them in Audacity or by some other means.

These are the steps:

Step 1: Choose an instrument that can create extended tones.

Step 2: Record a short loop of a single held tone on that instrument. Use a volume pedal or other tool to eliminate the attack at the start of the tone.

Step 3: Create many more such loops, all with the same instrument, and layer them atop the original loop.

Step 4: Record a document of these layered loops lasting approximately 1 minute.

Step 5: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

i've looped samples from both, added volume automation and some EQ and programmed 3 additional drum tracks using the Guru plugin to tie everything together.

Disquiet Junto Project 0190: Missed Connections
Set two disjointed loops atop each other, and then add sonic glue.

Last week’s project involved using loops to accrue layers. This week’s project involves layering loops. You needn’t have participated in last week’s project to participate in this week’s.

These are the steps:

Step 1: Choose two tracks from last week’s Disquiet Junto project. Be sure to use tracks that include a license that allows for non-commercial reworking. If you’re not sure, either choose a different track, or inquire with the musician. the project is here:

Step 2: From each of those two tracks, select one loop-able segment. Be sure the segments are of different lengths.

Step 3: Create a long string of each of the two loops from Step 2 by repeating them over and over. That is: make one long string of AAAAA… and make one long string of BBBBB…, where A and B are the two loops. (That is: Do not go ABABAB.)

Step 4: Layer the two tracks resulting from Step 3 for a single track of about one to two minutes in length.

Step 5: Add one element of your own to the result of Step 4 that serves to combine the two disparate loops into one composition.

Step 6: Record a document of these layered loops lasting approximately one to two minutes in length (longer is certainly fine).

Step 7: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 8: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

This is a track for Disquiet Junto group. This week's task was to create a track using only sounds from 2 tracks ("Do" and "Re") from the free solo piano album 'Screws' by Nils Frahm.

The inspiration for this track was the idea behind the album. From the description:

"Nils experienced an unfortunate accident which saw him fall from his bunk bed located directly above his studio, which resulted in a broken thumb. 
...
With four screws surgically placed inside his thumb, he started recording with his remaining 9 fingers, what later resulted in 9 intimate piano recordings."

I imagined what would happen to somebody who couldn't play music anymore, sitting by the piano many years later, trying to remember one of his tunes and trying to play it again.

For this track I cut up the original recordings and rearranged the bits in Ableton Live and then recorded it additionally processing it through BugBrand modular, Cocoquantus and A/DA Stereo Tapped Delay.
