Beautiful work, amazing counterpart to the drone. I may be missing something though, it seems to use modules outside the shared system? And are their details on the patch? Or has this series changed criteria? Great work nevertheless!

This is great; I loved listening to it. It sounds to me to be clearly a microtonal/just intonation scale. I have been exploring this recently, using a computer to interface with my modular. Two questions:  1) What scale is used here?  2) How was it done? That is, was a computer used? I have so far found no other way than to use a computer to generate these scales to interface with my modular. I'd love someone to make a quantizer or sequencer that the user can make his own scales....I see LaMonte Young listed so I'm assuming his Well-Tempered Piano scale?

Never mind, I just looked up the Telharmonic. Cool module and I can see now how this was probably made - using harmonics. Cheers!

“The sun is not the well-behaved neighbor we would like to imagine,” says Sten F. Odenwald, the author of a book entitled The 23rd Cycle: Learning to Live with a Stormy Star. During the year 2000, at the peak of the sun’s 23rd cycle (according to when scientists began tracking solar storm activity), the number of observed sunspots reached its highest recorded peak to that point. 

Geomagnetic storms are defined by changes in the disturbance-storm-time index (or DST), measured in units called nano-Tesla (nT). Think of it as something like barometric pressure, only on the sun. A geomagnetic storm is considered an intense “super-storm” when it reaches a minimum DST of less than —250 nT.

As the 23rd cycle closed in the year 2008, Odenwald warned that outbreaks of solar storm activity would only increase in future cycles. The historical models are already sobering; a geomagnetic storm caused the March1989 failure of Québec’s entire power grid, leaving six million people without electricity and causing auroras seen all the way to Texas. The minimum DST of this storm was —589 nT. (It would have been a delicious irony if the integer was 529, but alas).

With this cheerful tidbit in mind, Suss Müsik considered how the ionosphere of sound could be rendered unstable, causing fragments of foreboding beauty. A sampled bowl was refactored using a grain synthesizer, its shimmer used in parallel with a distressed organ sound. A Red Panda Particle pedal was used for the looping parts at 23 BPM.

The piece is titled DST —589 nT and was recorded live to 8-track.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

I usually have a rough outline of what i want to include, it's always fun to combine a few textures and styles to see what works together and to end up beatmatching some more traditional club stuff that also fits in stylistically 🦥

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix? 

I had a listen the other day while watching the scenery through the window of a moving train

q. describe a favorite object in your living room... 

I have a few pictures and art prints that my grandparents had in their house, they remind me of their old place, plus it's nice to give something a new lease of life.

Today we have a mellow mix out by an artist with whose work we recently fell in love with: Polypores. Hard to place in one category but with noticeable influences of synthwave, ambient, and drone, he himself describes his music as ‘Cosmic sleep music, sci-fi soundtracks and haunted drones’. Recently he released Azure and Tempus, an album which is out through Woodford Halse tapes. He also has some projects in the pipeline: Myriad for label @castlesinspace, Shpongos for @bluetech and a few others. 

Lastly, he is creating an album completely with his custom built Dopefer modular system. ánd he is working on a special collab for Miracle Pond with Gareth E Rees, who is the author of Unofficial Britain, a book/platform which focusses on celebrating the overlooked part of Britain in the past and present.
