Ask The Angels

This song is really personal to me. It’s about the struggle to trust and let your guard down when you've been hurt before. In the first verse, I talk about ‘fight or flight’—something I learned from my dad. He taught me to protect myself, but over time, I realized that instinct can make it really hard to connect with people, especially in relationships.

There’s this idea in the song that love feels dangerous, like you can’t ever fully relax. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘My love sleeps with one eye open.’ Even when you want to give someone a chance, there’s this voice in the back of your mind saying, ‘Be careful, don’t let them in too much.’

The chorus is kind of the heart of it. Sometimes it feels easier to just walk away before you get too deep, especially when trust doesn’t come naturally anymore. Overthinking everything can feel like a trap, so leaving feels like the safer option. But at the same time, there’s that desire—you want to believe in someone, you want to trust, but it’s hard when you’ve been let down before.

In the second verse, there’s a little glimmer of hope, like, ‘Okay, maybe this could work if you prove you’re different.’ But that hope comes with conditions. It’s not easy to rebuild trust when you’ve been through pain before. There’s this frustration, like, ‘I don’t have time to fix something that’s already broken—prove to me it’s real from the start.’

For me, this song is about navigating that tension between self-protection and vulnerability. It’s about being honest with yourself—about your fears, your walls, and the fact that trusting someone again takes real effort. But there’s also this underlying hope that maybe, just maybe, it’s possible if the right person comes along.

"That Far Forgotten Shore"* by classical composer Jeremias Langsämmer is a breathtaking orchestral journey, blending the grandeur of Western classical tradition with the evocative melodies of the Middle East. This sweeping soundtrack piece unfolds like a memory carried by the wind, its layered strings rising and falling like waves on an ancient shore.  

Deep strings introduce the theme, their rich, resonant tones imbued with longing, before swelling into a rich tapestry of sound—warm cellos, shimmering violas, and soaring violins weaving together in undulating phrases. Beneath them, deep, resonant percussion and plucked Middle Eastern instruments, such as the oud and qanun, add texture and depth, evoking sunlit dunes and distant, forgotten lands.  

The composition moves through shifting tides of emotion, from hushed, introspective passages to bold, cinematic crescendos. A hypnotic, rhythmic motif pulses beneath the orchestration, subtly mirroring the ebb and flow of the sea. The harmonies drift between Western tonality and modal inflections, creating a haunting, timeless atmosphere—both familiar and exotic, distant yet deeply human.  

"That Far Forgotten Shore" is a soundtrack for lost places, for whispered histories and unseen horizons—a piece that lingers in the soul long after the final note fades.

"That's What Friends Are For" is a raw, stripped-down folk-punk anthem that captures the resilience, camaraderie, and bittersweet reflections of everyday life. Built around a driving, percussive acoustic guitar, the song thrives on its rhythmic urgency, with each strum acting as both a pulse and a protest. The lone vocal delivery is direct and heartfelt, carrying a mix of defiance and melancholy, reminiscent of classic Billy Bragg-style storytelling.

Lyrically, the song shifts between moments of nostalgia, frustration, and hope—painting vivid images of fleeting joys with old friends, quiet moments of introspection, and the unshakable feeling of being caught in a system that promises more than it delivers. The recurring chorus, delivered with an almost mantra-like intensity, reinforces the idea that friendship and solidarity are the true anchors in turbulent times.

With no excess instrumentation to hide behind, That's What Friends Are For embraces its simplicity, letting the raw emotion shine through. The stark contrast between the warmth of shared moments and the weight of personal struggle makes it an intimate yet anthemic piece—one that lingers long after the final chord fades.
