The Páramo mountain environment is a rather quiet place. Still, when you really listen closely, there are many interesting detailed sounds to be heard.

Páramo is a very important alpine tundra ecosystem, located only in the Andes mountains range between the treeline and glaciers (average altitude 3500 - 4000m). It is one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. Colombia is one of only three countries in the world to be home to paramo and more than 60% of these moorlands are found here. The vegetation is composed mainly of giant rosette plants, shrubs and grasses. The most famous and important plant is the Frailejon. The Páramos are capturing water from low-hanging clouds and releasing it back into the soil, ensuring Colombian cities have a continuous water supply.

We have control over so very little in this insane little pickle we've found ourselves in. But one thing we can definitely control is whether we're really showing up for however much time we've got left on this amazing blue planet.

Fake Political Parties In A Fake Democracy

I've been recording throughout Deep Creek National Park (formerly Conservation Park) for several years, and throughout all seasons. This recent recording was different from any other I've made here. It was dominated mainly by Australian Ravens and Magpies, although a few other birds make an appearance, such as what I believe was an energetic little Brown Thornbill in the foreground, at one point. In other recordings made during the same morning at other nearby locations, Grey Shrike-thrushes and White-throated Treecreepers, amongst others, could be heard.

What I like most about this recording is the recurring, distant, beautiful, wistful call of a Magpie somewhere much farther up the valley: its song is sometimes occluded by the nearer Ravens and Magpies; and sometimes, in more quiet intervals, its song reverberates gently, quietly, and elegantly down the valley.

Can be listened to with speakers or headphones; but quality open-backed headphones are especially recommended.

Recorded on land of the Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri people that is now a National Park.
