This song began its life some 20 years ago recorded on Mark's old skool keyboard workstation as a bass line and drum beat, accentuated by a synth melody playing over some electric piano. It sat as that basic version until just recently, when Mark had gotten into horn arrangements, and wanted to try some out, thus creating the impetus for reviving this old tune. Plus, he wanted to get the Eclectic Collective to play the guitar and keys parts on it for a little extra jazzy pizzazz.
  He turned it over to the rest of the EC gang with a pretty clear vision of what he wanted structurally. Stephen was first up, adding his driving guitar to the fist part of every verse. Josh deftly chimed in with the response line in every verse. JJ then came into the mix last and sprinkled his magic electric piano and other keys throughout. After all of our parts were in the can, Mark went to work dutifully editing and mixing what you hear as the final product. Stephen then did his pro mastering work on it to add a little bit more shine.
 This was a lot of fun to put together. It doesn't feature all of the EC, but the other guys will be on many upcoming creations. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This song began as a bass composition recorded as a stem by Mark. He named it after a hang out spot he and his friends used to go to as teenagers to drink beer and smoke bowls. He shared it with JJ, who turned it over to the Eclectic Collective so that we could have our way with it. However, Mark didn't use a click track to record it, so when he sent it to us, Ken had to come up with a drum beat based on Mark's structure, to which Mark then redid his bass part. That takes a lot of imagination on Ken's part when we do something that way.
    The first one of us to lay down a part for it was Chris, who added some really freaky textural guitar. Ken was next up, completing the rhythm section with his mighty drums. Ken then redid his part to better match the bass, thus completing the rhythm section with his mighty drums. Then, Stephen laid down the gritty, underlying rhythm guitar that runs throughout. Josh was up next, adding his melodic wah guitar to the mix. JJ came along soon after and laid down the magical synth that runs throughout. Last, but not least. Tez dropped the fiery solo towards the end. 
  Once the music was all laid down, we thought it could use some oohs and aahs at the end, so Josh recorded them as a five part harmony. However, choosing to only use the highest thee parts in the song, our expert producer on this one, Tez, decided to make a coda out of all five. So, stick around for a treat at the end!
  This is the third song the Eclectic Collective has done as a collab with Mark F. He's a very talented solo bassist, whose other music worth checking out on his page, as well. We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.

A companion piece to "The McGills" and "The Preacher"...

My paternal grandmother, Frances McGill, was always a bit rebellious and rambunctious. As a child, she spent most of her time chasing adventures outdoors and survived a number of mishaps, including a life-threatening snake bite.

Following her mother's untimely death, she dropped out of school to get married. Her husband served in the military, then eventually became a minister. After 15 years of marriage, a son arrived (my father) and she dedicated her time to raising him. It was while raising him that she returned to school. She graduated from high school when he did, eventually going to college and graduating with a degree in Education.

Widowed at 50, she rebuilt her life and focused on teaching until she was in her 70s. By then, she’d been a nearly constant presence in our household. She was still a rebel in many ways (there are LOTS of stories!), but she had a deep, unstoppable faith that kept her going through the tough times.

When I think of her, I think of all the times we laughed together, but I also have wonderful memories of hanging out with her while she played the piano (or her Martin guitar) and sang songs. Her favorites included “Frankie & Johnny” and a variety of hymns. She’s been gone for almost 30 years now, but I think of her often. Her greatest legacy to her family includes her faith and the joy of music, which are the basis for this song. This piece is dedicated not only to her, but also to my mother and mother-in-law who left the same legacy.

I was interested in music in my early youth... so I soon got my first synthesizer and set up a small home recording studio.
over the years i played keyboards in 5 bands...the direction was rock...pop...blues and soul.
in the meantime i have discovered my enthusiasm for creating my own songs.
it makes me happy when I can compose...arrange...mix...produce and create something new.
it's like a passion to experiment with different styles of music... and it gives me a lot of joy.
the only limit is your imagination...
is my motto.
and everything is possible...you just have to try.
