In the autumn of '89, I saw four Fender Stratocasters at Matt Umanov Guitars in New York City, two in each showcase window beside the entrance. It was dusk, and four overhead lights shown down on each of them, making them glow like magical entities. While certainly being aware of different electric guitars, I had never really thought about the uniqueness of each model and maker in any great detail. In fact, the only one I had ever held in my hands was a Les Paul knockoff my brother had in 1978 or so. All of a sudden, here were these guitars up close. They certainly made an impression. I didn't buy one that day, but they stuck in my mind until the day I got the one pictured, with my friend Tim in northern Virginia. One day at work, he literally said to me, "let's go buy electric guitars." Sure, why the fuck not? Thanks, Tim!

I don't remember when I became aware of Loretta Lynn. It's like she was always there. This is not to say that I followed her a lot, or know that much about her songs, really. But I do remember that cassette tape I made around 1979 with one of her songs on it, and that amazing "hitch" in her voice on a certain song, that made me want to smile and cry at the same time.

I was in Radford, VA around May of 2011, and I heard this song by Fogerty, from his Blue Moon Swamp album (1979), while sitting at the old kitchen table at 804 Custis St. I remembered it when my brother Mike played it on a Zoom call a few weeks ago. So I decided to do a cover version. And only then did I discover that in fact it is from his album of the same name, released in 2004, not the aforementioned "Swamp". Ah, memory.

It felt wrong singing all the original lyrics. Keen's "regular guy" worked on an oil rig. I worked at Long John Silver's for 5 years as a young man. No comparison, huh? Yeah, *you* try to meet girls smelling like fish for three days after getting off  work.

Brief favorite story by REK: He was telling the story of when he was younger, he and his friends used to sit around for hours, days, weeks and months even, trying to learn how to play bluegrass music well. They could never get it right, and Robert on said on stage that night, "I never understood how you could love a style of music so much, and play it *so* bad."
