0043 - Go Check The Survey (Paul Hunter)

It feels quite surreal to say this, but Episode 03 of the Balearic London mix series is brought by none other than Italo house legend Don Carlos. Starting his DJ career in the late 70s, he is best known for his production debut 'Alone'. Widely known as the epitome of what dream house is, the track combines emotive piano chords, crisp percussion, and ethereal pads in what is beautifully floaty yet perfectly punchy perfection. Since then he's released more underground hits under his own name as well as his Montego Bay and Aquanauts monikers. He isn't just a legend of the 90s though, his releases in the recent years on Freerange Records, Utopia, Irma Records, and remixes on Wolf Music and more show that his music sounds as fresh now as ever.

Our man Tiago was in town recently for some gigs and was nice enough to come out to Kane studios to record a podcast, hang, and have some liquid refreshments. Hailing from Lisbon where he is a weekly resident at Club Lux, Tiago has a laid back intensity that is reflected in the expansive and inquisitive nature of his sets. Raised on good music in his home, turned on to drumming by his older brother, he came to Dj'ing via live music. He has been at it for close to twenty years, and in the last decade added production work to his resume. Prop Joe aka Harlan, record collector and DJ from Sydney, Australia brings us a 90 minutes of upbeat tunes. On this mixtapes Prop Joe shows us his dancier side compared to his usual selections. 

Prop Joe has recently been collecting and playing slower stuff in Reggae, RnB, Street Soul, Downtempo etc., but holds a general love for anything that gets the feet moving. He plays around  Sydney with some regular local gigs and the odd party, while also been running his own mix series under 'Music for Ears' for the last 3+ years and infrequently host events under the same name.

No Alla Violenza Vol. 5

This mix was originally meant to be recorded live at my next gig in Edinburgh at the end of the month. When it looked like I’d have to cancel, I decided to record it at home instead - just to share the vibe I had planned.

But the gig’s now back on, and the mix took on a life of its own. I kept going, extending it into a five-hour session that moves through all the sounds I’ve been drawn to lately - from new to old, much deepness and some feet shufflers.

Wanted to also pay tribute to the late great genius that was D'Angelo. May he rest in power x
