Then she was there on the cold floor again

It did, and when Billy cried out for his Ma’
she cried back and that’s the last breath she would draw
The whores from the hotel took Billy inside
and loved him with love that they tried to hide
They knew that the bastard would soon be a man
so the ramblers and drinkers took him by the hand  
They taught him to gamble
and taught him to fight
and taught him to drink and play parlors at night
Mad Zeke gave him pistols and taught him the draw
Paul taught him stride and dodging the law
From Virgil he learned horses, stud, the riverboat scene
And Casey taught him to be meaner than mean
They boys taught young William
all what they can
and Loretta showed Billy to feel like man
 Billy slept drunk dead while the bar burned below
he burst awake , Carmen screamin’
“Hun, we gotta go !”
 The fire took her features when it caught a western gust
and rifled up the staircase like a demon bent with lust
The whores and all the sinners
were trapped atop the stairs
But Billy made it out with just 6 seconds to spare  
He watched the brothel burn
and his family go to hell-
he watched from the barbers and sat quiet for a spell 
He stole the sheriffs horse-
and with his bent and bloodied spurs
turned the reigns toward Missouri
