We follow up our last premiere with a remix from the mighty WheelUP!  Shout out to Re:Fill & Cognitiva Records!

of the full release of ‘Cycles’ by the Jazzfunk duo Re:Fill, Cognitiva shine a light on the incredible remixes that feature on the LP, with the reworks coming from some fine talents indeed.

The sound that Re:Fill are able to conjure up is one of rhythmic complexity, simmering melodic sequences, and an overall feeling of quietly building euphoria that only comes from Jazz laden dance grooves. To assist with the overall vibe of their debut LP, Sofatalk, WheelUP and Ben Hauke were recruited to put their spins on the cuts ‘Impulse’ and ‘Stillness’, and the goods they serve up are truly spectacular. ‘Impulse’ sees both Sofatalk and WheelUP working their magic, with the Sofatalk remix adding in a cosmic tinge to compliment the already wide array of chordal tones, with emphasis placed on the movement between density and spatial vacuums which makes the movement through the phases extra enjoyable. WheelUP takes things down to a saunter, but what a saunter it is, with the feeling captured here one of rhythmic excellence, with the keys enveloping the listener in what could only be described as a blissful bath of melody.

To wrap things up, Ben Hauke really shifts perspectives on ‘Stillness’, with the hazy piano fuelled experience found in the original turbo drived upon a two step leaning beat. The delicate piano that makes the original so intoxicating remains as a rhythmic motif, with plenty of intriguing elements thrown into the mix that keep the mind yearning for more, whilst the beat gets the feet stepping until the early hours.

Three remixes, three differing interpretations, one big wetting of the appetite. This excellent trio only hints at the wider picture, so get locked in until the big day arrives!

Hunting for ghosts on shortwave radio. 
All sounds sourced from  http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ on 12/16/16, edited, collaged and layered in Audacity with no added fx.

Doing research/assembling source materials for this week's Junto project was extra enjoyable as it meant a return to an old pastime from childhood:  listening to and capturing shortwave radio late into the night. 

A big part of shortwave's appeal is how the sounds and voices coming in and out of focus always read to me as haunted-  creepy and mesmerising in equal measure; The Conet Project made perfect sense when I first heard of it. 

I used to be fascinated by these sounds when I was a kid, rolling the dial millimeter by millimeter on a  Citizen dual tape boombox with two SW bands. I used to make pause tapes of stuff I would find: Voice of America, world music, cold war propaganda, evangelists and that creepy time clock. Sometimes I'd play two tapes at the same time and record them onto a different tape machine. 
These pre-to-mid-adolescent tape collages are probably in a box somewhere in Manitoba, so this week's project felt like an homage to those times, and an opportunity to dive back into a process that reaches back a few decades, directly connected to my current practice of making, tweaking, finding and documenting odd sounds.

For Pixel Mixer's Final Fantasy 9 Tribute album, I wanted to do some electronic music again. Inspired by some Future Bass tutorials on Youtube, I thought it would be a fun genre to explore. I started sketching some ideas, and quickly had a Future Bass and a more DnB inspired second part cobbled together that became the backbone of the track. When I showed it to the album director, he said "I had to focus to recognize it, try to add a thing or two to bring it home just a bit". Whoops, guess I went overboard with the 'own interpretation' part again!

After wrestling with the arrangement some more to make it more recognizable, I also was ready to think about how I wanted to fill the melodic parts (usually the only parts I take from the source). I asked Earth Kid if she'd be interested to sing on one of my electronic tracks again, and fortunately she was more than happy to do so. As usual, she totally delivered an awesome performance and also did great with the weird harmonies I wrote.

Unlike the Suikoden 3 track we previously worked on, this time I wrote the lyrics (for better or worse). I thought it'd be nice to try and write them from the perspective of Cid (who in the game cheated on his wife and got returned into an oglop and later a frog), who is looking back on his mistakes and wants to make amends with his wife. Couldn’t help but sneak in a frog reference in the lyrics as well as some frog sounds, just because :)

While the arrangement, perhaps a bit liberal at first glance, can be enjoyed on its own and without any connection to the game, I do hope that the attentive FF9 fan will appreciate the nudges and connection to the game and finds it extra enjoyable.
