Second State’s latest release is a special one — the debut LP from talented German producer @wigbert. Stepping up for his first full-length, he demonstrates why he’s a firm favorite among so many. The Distorted Matter LP showcases his affinity for both atmospheric mood pieces and pummeling club cuts, the sign of a producer with more than one trick up his sleeve. 

“Uncertainty” opens the album in an ominous tone. As its name suggests, it creates a feeling of unease, even horror, as macabre drones blare underneath bleepy arpeggios. Later on the LP, on “Error 404”, this mood is revisited, with bleeps and static signifying that something has gone awry. The second track on the record, “Reflection” is its hardest hitting. Ice-cold stabs, a pumping kick and driving rhythms send the track into overdrive before creepy arps and drums come back in. It’s complex, layered and unrelenting. 

Night Vision” is threaded with warped off-kilter rhythms, while “Xcelerator” is charged with nervous energy, echo FX and prickling percussion. Other tracks on the LP share this latter mood, such as “Digital Mirroring”, with its windblown synths, distorted vox and broken beats, while the title track heralds a different variety of sounds. The beats on it are also chunky, but the airy pads place it in a more ethereal category. “Drone Level” is similarly lighter in spirit, with arps shimmering over the sound of running water.

The rest of the LP continues in this is more pensive vein, with the rhythms of “Focus” loping under twinkling, reverbed synths, before “Transformed” closes the album in a delicate melange of dreamy pads, chopped up beats, and sounds that mimic insects and nature.

We take a trip to Belfast once again, this time stopping in with the host of BBC Radio Ulster show 'Beat Seekers' and local DJ and producer, Reger.

Being somewhat new to the Irish DJ circuit, Robbie McCammon aka Reger started playing out in Belfast in 2019, and has since appeared at venues such as Ulster Sports Club, Thompson’s Garage and Palm House for events such as Misfit and Stereo Sessions.

In 2020, Robbie began work at BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Line [Now Beat Seekers] showcasing exclusive Irish talent. Robbie's passion for radio and showcasing new Irish talent, alongside influences from the likes of Special Request, Blawan, Overmono, Objekt, Andrew Weatherall, Gilles Peterson, Timmy Stewart and Carlton Doom all contributes to such a wide variety of sounds you hear within Reger productions and mixes.

Local Selection 119: Reger

Today we premiere yet another brilliant track, today coming from young Dublin based DJ and produce, Mathew Day aka Taking Names.

Like most weeks we got sent a ton of new music and Mathew Day aka Taking Names was a name we were not familiar with, but certainly are now.

From his early days of playing piano and discovering the likes of Kraftwerk, The Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode through his father's record collection, his passion for electronic music began.

After a few back and forth emails, Matthew spoke passionately about how his taste in music evolved to encompass electronic sounds from across the spectrum of electro, house, techno and bass music. Inspired by the wealth of talent in Ireland and abroad, his influences include Desert Sound Colony, Pepe, 96 Back and Long Island Sound to name a few.

Last year saw Matthew's first release on the Birmingham label Fly By Night Recordings, an ethereal electro number to compliment a time where floating through space might be preferable. This year Matthew plans to expand his musical horizons in new directions with a back catalogue of unreleased tracks that grows week upon week as the lockdown continues,  today culminating in his self released EP called Deep Blue, which also features a remix from The Droid, who we are fans of.

Four Four Premiere: Taking Names - Deep Blue

We're in London for the latest mix today, as Kerry native FLÆN join us on the Local Selection for a serious four-to-the-floor hour of the heaviest hitters to liven up your Wednesday.

FLÆN is well known for his dark and industrial techno sounds through both his productions and DJ sets, and this set takes us through a selection of his own tracks, alongside some of his favourite bangers. 

Having only been DJing and producing over the past 3 years, he has quickly honed his style, creating a unique sound using both hardware and software in his productions.

The past 2 years have been big for FLÆN having had releases on major labels such as Gobsmacked Records, Falsive Records, Occult Rhythms, Tetreadre Records and JoeFarr's User Experience, seeing the likes of DAX J, Rebekah, JoeFarr, Parallx, Patrick DSP, and Kobosil, Kozlov among others supporting and playing out his tracks. 

This is an hour of the tough stuff to give your Wednesday afternoon a serious wake up.  This bangs.
