the night was coming on as you
collapsed there 
in that hall of mirrors.
“what a laugh,”
said some vague passerby.
the note was in your pocket,
and your blade, 
also your broken locket…
the note said simply this:
it said goodbye

now you can lie on a tray,
or you could just float away,
or shrug 
as you are handed your disguise.
you and your tender crutch,
so many lonely companions
still to touch,
each of them soon to say
goodbye…
you don’t even know just why.

you can come out and play
or you could just float away goodbye

the night was dripping down
as you followed 
some carny’s sullen shadow,
following in search 
of haunted highs.
he led you through the rubble,
said, while making love 
on a pile of shovels: “so lovely
are your cemetery eyes”

now you can feel all betrayed
or you could just float away
or shrug
while you are casually denied.
