Seoul-based dj and producer Closet Yi first appeared on our radar in 2020 with her EP ‘Tam Tam Land’, released via Hollick and Gabriel Szatan’s imprint No Bad Days. This quirky EP quickly put her on the map as a producer to keep an eye on. Her next EP on Seoul label Honey Badger Records - incorporating newer styles and less conventional rhythms into her music - cemented her as a multi-faceted and creative artist, meanwhile dj sets across the most respected clubs in Seoul and beyond have proven her as a mainstay of her local scene.Today we’re honoured to have her on our MIXED BY/ series today to answer some of our questions and share with us an hour-long journey of high-energy trance leaning tunes.

Standing out in the overcrowded DJ world is not easy. To do so when you're just 17 is almost unbelievable. But that is when Belgian-born AliA (@aliamusicc) first started making people take note of her fresh selections and technical skills on the decks. They were way beyond her years and since then she has gone on to become a resident at Belgium’s HORST Festival and a guest at the likes of Worldwide, Dimensions and Lowlands. 

This week's mix is pure vibes. It shows off AliA's ability to seamlessly join dots between seemingly disparate sounds: in her hands a transition from lo-fi house to breezy jazz-funk is easy. A lush vocal cut into dark and dirty bass rhythms? No problem. It all adds up to a selection that will be suited to any occasion, from a pre-party warm-up at home to a long drive in your car. Good music is good music, no matter the speed or style, and never is that more obvious than when listening to AliA do her thing.

@adab arrived at a love of electronic music on the dance floor of queer-run techno party In Training in their native Cleveland. Before long, they went on to established themselves as a DJ who plays electric sets of house, techno and club beats as part of a constant quest to "seek the unifying elements in the world and themselves." The Pittsburgh resident and radio regular is now half of Cleveland party Heaven is in You and has an international profile that is only set to grow as they continue to confound expectations with each new set. 

That starts with this week's mix, which is an other-worldly trip into genre-less electronics. Dense and cinematic ambiance and sound design set the opening scene - it's a world of searching synths and shadowy alien life forms in which a skeletal rhythm eventually appears. Deconstructed dub, club and jungle flavour the ensuing grooves which are heads down and dark. They evoke all manner of dystopian futures and make for a brilliantly unconventional ride.

Milan’s @Turbojazz is currently celebrating two decades in the music business with the release of his rather sublime album Whateverism. It’s a journey through all the sounds and genres which have shaped his now celebrated musical output including Nu Jazz, Soul and House from deep to broken beat. It’s a wonderfully rich release.

To celebrate we asked Turbojazz to step up to the LV decks and he has done us proud with a mix which also taps into the many layers of his musical tastes. This is a seriously classy mixtape.

Our 2nd new resident for 2023, Cosmo Sofi comes through with a beautiful, heady and tribal wordly mix for #3 of our mix series.

Uruguayan born, London based, Sofi’s passion and curiosity for music has led her to dig a wide range of sounds that span different times and spaces. She is always discovering rare and soulful sounds to share with the world, previously showcased on her monthly 'Spectrums' show on Worldwide FM.

Sofi plays the Secretsundaze Residential party on 11th March 2023 at Corsica Studios, going b2b with Norsicaa, and our other incredible new resident Macca will be going b2b with Sofie K. Meanwhile our own James Secretsundaze plays a 7 hour set in Room 1.

Secretsundaze Mix Series #3: Cosmo Sofi

Next up on the Secretsundaze Mix Series is Ukrainian based Roman Krimsky, AKA Roman K who’s been mastering the DJ craft and developing his own approach to house music since 2005. Roman is hands down one of the best resident DJs we’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside, at one of our favourite clubs in the world, Closer, Kiev.

Roman caught the SS inspiration and recorded us a superb mix, journeying through Italian ambient, house and breaks - bringing us into Spring the right way.

Roman plays Secretsundaze presents ‘Festival of Dance’ on Saturday May 6 at The Cause alongside a wealth of other international and locally based talent.

Secretsundaze Mix Series #4: Roman K

Next up on the mix series we have Cloud 9 Sound System...

Cloud 9 Sound System took inspiration from David Mancuso's New York loft parties and London's Audiophile scene. The collective hosts dance parties in Barcelona creating a space to dance and experience a strong connection to sound, while keeping at heart the undeniable feeling of a true house party. 

The mix in their words: "It's part of a live recording from one of our parties in which we manage to cross through different genres and moods without having to stay on a similar bpm. We follow the ethos of The Loft in which we try to play the entire record as it was intended to be listened to as well as not mixing for a full sensorial experience."

Steering the ship for #6 in the series we are happy to have the London based DJ babyschön taking us on a slow and steady journey through sleazy chuggy new wave & new beat, leftfield disco, snyth pop and more..

Both her sound and her approach are informed by her background in radio — she’s been hosting shows on stations across the world since 2018 and co-founded Leeds’ NARR Radio in 2020. Accordingly, expect off-kilter tunes and slow n steady mixing that often prioritises vibes over BPM.

#7 in the series see our very own Meg Paine take us on a trip to euphoria. Weaving through an intricate journey of different moods and feelings powered by crisp drum grooves, delicate acid lines, & hands-in the-air piano chords, Meg delves deep into the sounds of 90s house, early prog & low slung tech house. 

Known for being an adept and intentional crate digger, her selections are full of warmth, heart and feeling, guaranteed to leave you feeling joyful.

Papa Nugs explores the slower, deeper and more old-school side of his sound for #8 in our mix series.

Drawing from his vinyl collection and from labels such as Wiggle, KYR, Stress and Shindig, he provides a 60 minute journey thru 90s house, prog, trance and acid: the sounds that have informed his productions today that have found homes on the likes of R.A.N.D, Warning and Semi Delicious no less..

We look forward to welcoming him to The Pickle Factory this Saturday 3rd February for his debut with us, joining TSUNIMAN and our very own Secretsundaze.

A self-confessed Noisician, Paula Temple obliterated 2014 with ‘Deathvox’, her second monumental release for the legendary label R&S. Her debut ‘Colonized’ EP made one of biggest statements in 2013 for uncompromising techno, followed by remixes for avant-electronic acts The Knife, Perera Elsewhere and Planningtorock. Such refreshing high-voltage output has rapidly placed Paula Temple at the forefront of new techno.

Her performances in Detroit for the Movement festival were some of the most memorable of the weekend and are still being talked about by those lucky enough to witness them. She has graciously provided an hour(ish) of her set from the Underground stage at Movement 2015 for this episode of SUBterror Radio. Prepare for facemelting.

Secretsundaze is the trademark of forward-thinking, underground house music. As an artist and brand – spanning parties and festivals, a record label, a studio, an NTS residency and a live band project – it’s been operating for over 20 years and embodies the spirit and community of London’s club culture. But it’s never been one to sit still or rest on its laurels; leave that to the nostalgia crew because Secretsundaze always keeps it moving. 

Take this year, 2024, as an example. Right now Secretsundaze is stepping out as an artist proposition in its own right, helmed by producer/DJ/curator James Priestley who’s currently packing a stack of club tracks that will drop across the year and establish the project as a hit factory for DJs and dancers searching for a fresh take on house music that draws on breakbeat energy and trancey euphoria. Priestley is known to take the roof off as a DJ and now he’s adding to his arsenal with sought-after solo productions of his own under the Secretsundaze name. 

As a tastemaker, Secretsundaze sits at the cutting-edge, bringing new heads into the fold and always looking to champion new talent. His NTS residency, which has seen MoMa Ready, Paquita Gordon and Alex Kassian guest recently, is a reflection of the project’s current dancefloor obsessions. The meticulous curation of the Secretsundaze presents parties and Multi Multi festival, renowned for featuring talents such as Ash Lauryn and Carista long before they gained widespread recognition and uniting visionary artists like Toumba, Tash LC and NIKS under a single roof, serves as a compelling testament to Secretsundaze’s commitment in celebrating new artists.

Now for some history: 2022 saw the launch of Spirit Of Sundaze Ensemble, a full live band project that reimagines anthems beloved of those in the know, recording and performing cult bangers like Photek’s ‘Mine To Give’ and Joyce Sims’ ‘Come Into My Life’. The band has already graced the stages of the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) and the ICA as well as Beat Hotel and Kala festivals, with a debut LP set for release later this year.

This duality of cutting-edge and classic is what makes Secretsundaze so special. Priestley originally cut his teeth as a d’n’b DJ and a promoter of not-so-legal warehouse parties before becoming an annual resident at the legendary Robert Johnson and landing gigs at Panorama Bar and Queen at Smart Bar, which is the kind of gigography that many selectors would happily settle for. But Priestley’s love of underground club culture has propelled him even further and Secretsundaze is now two decades deep, a pillar of London culture that has poured blood, sweat and tears into the city’s music community. 

Secretsundaze begins 2024 as a solo venture with Priestley at the helm, navigating an ever-expanding musical universe that unearths and re-engages with different styles, genres and music scene via parties, live shows, productions, radio and even a new record label.
