Anfang März diesen Jahres feierten wir mir mit den Jungs von Deviant Affections im Hamburger Übel & Gefährlich unsere Geburtstagsparty. Unter anderem legte dort auch Jacob Groening auf, den wir bis dahin zwar noch nicht persönlich, aber immerhin vom Namen her schon kannten. Es folgten etliche gemeinsame Partybesuche, ein erster Artikel über ihn und im Laufe der Zeit entspann sich eine persönliche Freundschaft zu dem Hamburger, der sich längst über die Hansestadt hinaus einen Namen als hervorragender DJ gemacht hat.

Ob im Hamburger EGO, den Münchener Kong oder dem Berliner KaterHolzig (am kommenden 6. Oktober)… Jacob wird mittlerweile deutschlandweit in renommierten Clubs gebucht und begeistert das Publikum mit seinem ganz eigenen Stil, der sich in den Weiten des Deep-Houses bewegt aber stets mit Einflüssen aus vielen anderen Bereichen angereichert wird. So kann es passieren dass soulige oder sogar jazzige Rhythmen im Set erklingen oder Anleihen beim Hip Hop genommen werden. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein sehr stilvoller und wohl temperierter Sound, auf den man sich jedes Mal wieder freut, wenn Jacob an die Decks tritt.

Das geschieht gerade in Berlin und Hamburg zum Glück relativ oft, denn neben seinem Künstlerdasein hat er in Hamburg zusammen mit seinem Kollegen Daniel Wilhelm das Künstlerprojekt „Tanzen hilft!“ ins Leben gerufen, welches auch gleichzeitig eine Veranstaltungsreihe darstellt, die aus Hamburgs Partylandschaft nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Darüber hinaus ist er ein Gründungsmitglied der „Voll Schön“–Crew, die in Berlin und Hamburg Partys unter eben diesem Namen veranstalten, bei denen der Name absolut Programm ist.

Ein weiterer Aspekt in Jacobs Schaffen macht seinen Podcastbeitrag zu einer Besonderheit, auf die wir besonders stolz sind. Mittlerweile produziert er auch selbst und gleich sein erster Track wurde so begeistert aufgenommen, dass bereits in naher Zukunft ein Release ansteht. In keinem anderen Set war „Hang Over“ bisher zu hören und so weht ein bisschen der Hauch einer Premiere durch die 24. Ausgabe des „Das haett es frueher nicht gegeben“-Podcasts, der den Hörer in deepe Gewässer entführen wird, in denen es auch die ein oder andere Perle aus früheren Tagen zu finden gibt…

On the 58th edition of our blogcast, we proudly present the beautiful Tulum-based artist, Nour.

NOUR’s exploration of different countries and cultures was the main ingredient for the recipe of her smooth, uplifting sound. This mix provides a soothing flow that takes you on an enchanting trip through different, somehow contradictory natural environments. Deep house lovers, you’re bound to get hooked to this set.

Who is Nour?

First to herself, as it goes, searching for a sound that would reverberate with her soul, Nour ultimately found one in between various genres, modulated by her moods. She connects to music through a myriad of influences originating from her abound personal experiences living in very different, often contradictory, cultural and natural environments. Born Palestinian, ever since cosmopolitan... This alone speaks volumes.

Nour emerged as a consummate and inimitable stage identity first in Toronto, her more or less permanent base, then on the international scene through her involvement with a number of momentous and paradigmatic projects. Papaya Playa Project in Tulum (Mexico) is most notably one of them, a Caribbean brainchild of legendary Bar 25/Kater Holzig (once and to be always the case). She has been a resident with the beach club since 2012 – the one-of-a-kind open-plan venue that, through ecstatic reviews in the global Media (from Vogue to Wall Street Journal), has allegedly kick-started the development of the entire area making the small town one of the most desirable destinations in the world.

Since 2014, she has been in charge of the scene at Gitano, another and most recent gypset outpost in Tulum, booking DJs worldwide for her time-off at the decks in the jungle.

2015 saw her full-time and in different capacities involved in kicking off Scorpios, a brand new beach club in Mykonos, Greece -- but primarily so as a resident DJ there sharing the stage with the likes of Acid Pauli, NU, Christopher Schwarzenegger, Dimitri from Paris, Louie Vega, to name a few.

Her list of gig associations is long and includes such names as Daniel Bortz, Tiefschwarz, Psychemagik, Capablanca, Mia Lucci, Pilocka Krach, Fritz Zander, Alex, Soukie&Windish, Oceanvs Orientalis, Trickski, HVOB, Nitin, Silky.

It's Berlin and, specifically, Kater Blau that Nour considers her favorite venue. It never takes long before one sees her name reprinted on its famous SASOMO billboard.

Her credo is Deep House of the kind that makes Nour always in the right place with it. Who does not love it deep? Anything but shallow and fake.

Netam is Utku Temel’s pseudonym that emerged from one of his favorite books, “Har” of Murat Uyurkulak.
 
Netam does not deal with the definition of “spatial music”, stereotyped styles or industrial concerns during music production. He has a musical understanding that is constantly evolving and nourishing from all aural/audial beings. Therefore, none of his songs is fully finished. They constantly evolve and improve as they evolve.
 
He starts his musical career at the age of 7 with a melodica. He dreams of playing the piano for 8 years. He makes his first compositions with a toy organ until he reaches his piano when he is 15. The foundation of his music is based on long hours he spent on his piano every day and extreme attempts of production.
 
He continues experimenting on music in an Anatolian district dominated by eastern instruments until he moves to Istanbul to study architecture. After settling in Istanbul, he tries to reflect the mixed culture and the spirit of the geography where he exists into his music.
 
Netam continues to produce with this philosophy and a genre-free attitude that cannot fit into any label or classification.

What pushed you towards music production? Where did the inspiration come from?

I love every activity which is related with good music. I started to composing with my toy keyboard (which is unable to process when you press 3 keys in the same time) and music production was always a part of my life with or without any digital audio workstation. 

Do you think music interconnects with culture?
How does the environment you live in affect your music?

This feels right. As a South-Eastern Anatolia based Turkish producer, I always hear the anatolian melodies flying around my head. Also I believe that we carry the culture and all of the habits with feeling of the environment that we grew in. 

Do you get inspired by any other form of arts?

It is possible to getting inspired from every kind of art. For example, it is possible to create a music which is inspired from a painting, a sculpture made by trash, a pattern on the carpet etc. I am specially obsessed with recording and resampling different sounds. Every matter, every street, every room have a different sound and every sound carries its own story. After the recording, all you have to do is telling the story.

What makes a set a good set?

If the music is good, everything is good. Also creativity, transitions and consonant music selection are important points.

You seem to have a wide range of sources. Is there any particular era or bands that influence you more?

I am a fan of experimental music. Hearing something new is the most powerful musical feeling for me. I listen and get inspired by every kind of original music.

What’s the process you follow when bringing tunes together? Is it instinctive only or do you plan ahead?

It depends, sometimes I am catching and connecting some parts of different songs before trying but instinction has the main role. Also I usually increase the tempo slightly, and leave some calm moments for breathing. 

What would you like to say about your podcast?

As you see in the title, its a juicy live set. The thing about being juicy is, it serves you a sound that you can liquefy yourself into it. I just liquified myself into it, so join into this juicyland and flow into the sound!!
