"Sehrang Transcends Barriers" - All About Jazz, 2014

Sehrang, meaning tri-coloured in Farsi, is a trio comprised of three young Iranian musicians who share the same vision for making a new sound, inspired by and rooted in their common culture. 
Subtle, explosive and groovy, Sehrang’s music is dynamic, which arouses a whole range of emotions. “Their musical landscape has a texture of Persian folk and classical — very rhythmic-based, emphasizing percussion and syncopation and featuring a vocal style that combines tribal chanting, scat singing, and tahrir (a type of an ornamental trill or a style of singing comparable to yodeling).”- JazzCorner, 2014.
The band uses the harmonies influenced by jazz and European music and let itself be inspired by melodies from South to north of Iran and even as far as Africa and south America. 
The lyrics are mostly in Farsi, self-written or from modern Iranian poets such as Ahamd Shamloo. 

Sehrang’s repertoire consists of original compositions and new arrangements of Iranian folk and traditional songs. Never the less, the Band leaves its musical signature in each and every piece. 

Sehrang released its first CD in February 2014 and has been since received very well among the international critics. 
All About Jazz magazine commented about Sehrang’s debut album “Dar Lahzeh”:

"For those who haven’t looked beyond American borders to see how jazz is interpreted in other nations Dar Lahze will be an enlightening experience. Free from any commercial constraints, Sehrang roam through various styles and tones; every track has its own personality and individual quirks."

"Sehrang", aus dem persischen übersetzt, bedeutet drei Farben. Es spiegelt die Charaktere, Instrumente und Lebensgeschichten der drei jungen iranischen Musiker-innen, die sich ende 2012 in Wien zu einem außerordentlichen Akustik-Trio zusammengeschlossen haben. Sie teilen die gleiche Leidenschaft für die Suche nach ihren musikalischen Ursprüngen und verbinden sie auf eine einzigartige Weise mit afrikanischen und westlichen Elementen. Dieser Mix, der sich auch als Worldmusic bezeichnen lässt, schafft es auf eine neue Art, die iranische Musik und die Sprache Farsi, mit anderen Genres zu verbinden. Die selbstgeschriebenen Texte beinhalten klassische und moderne iranische Poesie. Sie schaffen es zu dritt mit rhythmisch und melodisch virtuosen Stücken eine spannende Atmosphäre zu erzeugen. Sehrang ist ein dreifarbiger Regenbogen mit Golnar Shahyar (Vocals), Mahan Mirarab (Gitarre) und Shayan Fathi (Drums-Percussion).
