It's Showcase time, where Selador guarantees the joy of six. Half a dozen ultra-fresh jams from Selador debutants, a veritable feast of musical goodness, seasoned with some succulent surprises.

In the beginning there was rhythm, and that is certainly to the fore with our opener. Midnight Sun by the gizA DJs duo from Italy, fresh from excursions for the likes of Diynamic, Eklektisch and Glasgow Undergound, delivers the funkiest of intros, teasing you all the way to a euphoric guitar drop. A brilliantly original opening salvo.

Second on the grid it's Sam Hopgood (most recently releasing on Nick Warren's Soundgarden imprint) with Waiting. The wait for his Selador debut is over as this native of one of our favourite cities, Melbourne, hits bullseye with an infectious number that subtly builds from dreamy to dramatic over the course of a spellbinding seven minutes.

Three is, of course, the magic number, and here we find Agustin Giri, a consistent presence in the melodic and progressive charts that count. Hailing from one of electronic music's nerve centres, Argentina, Nitt features one of the most insistent riffs we've heard in aeons, this electronic earworm riding a bed of the crispest beats.

Opening side two (in our minds, we picture a 12" record), we find Kate Ozz. As befits a globetrotting label like Selador, Kate originates from Moscow but is currently based in Miami. Birds of Paradise is an unavoidable peak time banger which is another contender for hypnotic riff of the year.

Taking the fifth, we present Paul Sparkes, Brit with a truly global CV. Here at Selador HQ, we can never get enough wonkiness, so when Paul delivered Hour of Wonk, we knew we had a winner. Alas it is 6 minutes rather than 60, but that time is packed full of truly righteous, uplifting sounds

Completing our 6-0 dancefloor demolition is the sensuous Hopeless Cause from one of Spain's fastest rising stars, Grezzer. A galloping bassline kicks us off, with ever more mesmerising synth sounds and a haunting vocal hook.

I decided with this longer style mix, that I would chose a lot of tracks old and new, some well known and many not so much, all of varying housey vibes, some vocal and deeper, while some get acidic and tougher, but always with a house slant. I suppose its kind of music that I would play back at an after party, and delving deep with lots of gems that I play in my sets. 

I’ve been a DJ since the late 80’s, so as you can imagine, I’ve amassed a heck of a lot of music, so I love to play older tracks, that may spark a memory, or give a particular flavour of sound from a certain era, creating a certain mood, and then I like to gently shift vibes thought the mixes, keeping you groovin’, but with a chunkiness at times, rather than keeping to one specific flavour throughout. There’s so much music around, and some of it comes and goes in a matter of weeks, and so I wanted to bring a light on some of these tracks, while interspersing with fresh tracks.

The Ones That Got Away. In a world awash with music, we all have those tunes that are special to us, heart-achingly magnificent moments preserved in aspic in our memories…but which never got the moment in the sun they so richly deserve. 

  A DJ can campaign for such wonders ceaselessly, sharing them far and wide. Or you can go one step further, as Dave Seaman chose to do here with an anthemic, inspirational track that he had held dear for many years:  

“'Hold On' was one that got away for me. I loved the original back in 1991 and always thought it never got the recognition it should have, so it had been in the back of my mind for 30+ years that one day I'd revisit it. The idea resurfaced when I found the original 12” whilst sifting through my vinyl collection, and via the magic of AI managed to extract the vocal to give it a go,” explains Selador’s head honcho.

  The pedigree of ‘Hold On’ cannot be in doubt, co-written / produced by the inimitable Youth, king of dubwise excursions from Killing Joke to Blue Pearl via Dragonfly Records, The Verve and so many more on his storied C, it was originally released on his WAU/Mr Modo imprint. He has given his blessing to Dave’s mighty revival of his baby – as, crucially, has singer Shola Phillips, who imbues the impassioned words with the perfect but oh so hard to achieve balance of power and subtlety, a timeless tour de force vocal performance.

  “I’m really happy with the result and 32 years later, the lyrical sentiment has never been more pertinent“ concludes Dave.

The Boss is back in town, and how.

On a roll…in the ascendancy…top of the current form table…all epithets that could be applied to Dave and his stellar output in recent months, be it solo or in tandem with Quivver; on Selador, or with our friends at labels such as Sum Over Histories, Mobilee, Einmusika and Poker Flat.

And so to YoHo. It might sound like a new brand of pro-biotic yoghurt, or a vodka mixer… or even, as in our case, conjure up visions of piratical shenanigans. Be warned however, this particular sonic shanty, will provide all the treasure you’ll need for your own desert island disco.

The Original mix is textbook Dave, growing bigger and broodier with each newly introduced motif. The post-breakdown conclusion a squelching and menacing fusion of Bauhaus meets DJ Pierre proportions.

The Teutonic Dub then strips things back to bass-ics, an intoxicating brew that nods to the original Prog sound circa 1991 while sounding every bit as 2024 as a Tory MP abadoning ship.

Our triumphant triptych is completed by one of our favourite Seladorians, Mr James Harcourt. In a move too seldom seen, James does much more than just nod to the vibe of Dave’s originals, but equally his scattergun riffage and gorgeous keys take the tune to a euphoric elsewhere. So much so, it was the version Dave & Quivver chose for inclusion on their upcoming Balance Mix compilation album.

Ooh ahhh.. Shiver mi timbers!

Cosmic Boogie asked me to put a mix together for his re-launched blog so I put this edit together as a little exclusive for the mix and thought I'd share it here seeing as the original version (either on Chicago's Gherkin or or Italy's D-Vision) is currently changing hands for £40 plus on Discogs!

Released back in 1991, it's still for me one of the most seductive house records ever...

A few things gigwise for February. As well as the usual bit's at West London's 'The Regent' and East London's 'Big In Japan' night, I'm also playing for the Shameless Disco boy's at The Drop in Stoke Newington alongside rising star Ben Sun, really looking forward to that.
