One of electronic music's true daddies steps up.

Heavily influenced by Aphex Twin, who went on to become his labelmate at Warp, Tom 'Squarepusher' Jenkinson had an experimental approach to bass guitar - both at school, and then later in teenage metal bands - which he applied to electronic music, releasing his debut record, Stereotype (under the name Stereotype) in 1994. After a series of records on Spymania, Jenkinson landed on Warp's roster in 1995, and became part of the label's stable of 1990s titans with Aphex, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Plaid et al.

The 20 years since have seen Squarepusher tear up the templates of jazz, drum'n'bass, psychedelia, techno and more across over 15 albums, while also developing one of the most talked-about live shows on the electronic circuit. Last year, the Squarepusher project reached a logical climax of sorts when Jenkinson released an EP, Music for Robots, that was written by him but performed by a trio of Z-Machine robots (including a 77-fingered guitarist and a 22-armed drummer). That hasn't, of course, stopped him: this month he released his latest album, Damogen Furies. 

For Squarepusher's FACT mix, he looks way back, at the rave music from the turn of the 1990s that not only inspired him, but many of his contemporaries. This is Squarepusher presents Shut Up And Dance, 1990-1992, and it's rude as fuck.

Wildlifes, numbers, kids voices, nostalgia, analog sounds, drugs, ambient sounds, natural landscapes, cassettes and nature documentaries are part of the elements that define Scottish band Boards of Canada. This year marks the 20 th anniversary of their debut album, Music has the right to Children. I gathered over 50 tracks, originals from the bands, covers from producers on YouTube and Soundcloud, remixed of and by BoC and samples used by the band to pay homage to BoC. The Warp Records Bleep × takeover marked the last event at our pop-up shop in Dalston. Mira Calix, Plaid and Special Request all delivered sets that were energetic, playful and ultimately; incredibly fun. This mix from Plaid starts from the off at 100% and stays there till the end. From the first kickdrum to the final squelch, this is a constant roller bursting with heart palpitating energy.  60 minutes of pure vibrancy with a breakbeat or two thrown in for good measure - fitting for a final big blow out!

No frills or faff about this set, just banger after glorious banger from Warp kingpins.

Boards Of Canada | An Essential Mix

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
