A deeply personal account of my love affair with techno/rave/hardcore/breakbeat music circa 1990-1994. 

The phrase came about from a mate who came over, saw all the flyers (for club nights I was too young to go to) stuck all over my bedroom walls, and called me a rave kid. Yeah, that's me.

Mostly my own vinyl and CD rips alongside more recently acquired digital, initally put together with DJay 2 following the demise of my turntables; however most stuff I do nowadays is sequenced for maximum rollout potential, cheeky edits and ting - audacity/ableton live.

So it's taken me two years to pick this series up again; hopefully it was worth the wait :) 
The sharp-eyed observer will notice that I've been sat on this one for a month, and I must say I've been enjoying it immensely, packed as it is with some of my all-time favourite AFX moments. From the poignant genius of Wet Tip Hen Ax, If It Really Is Me and the sublime AB5 Tk1, to the uplifting bounciness of Klopjob and Cuckoo, and importantly Analogue Bubblebath 1 - which I'd single out as THE song that kicked off my RDJ fixation. As previously discussed, these are not all obscurities, and I'm entirely comfortable with this.

Here at Dekmantel we are a big fan of Berlin based Brit Objekt. Evidence: you will see him play our festival in Amsterdam as well as Lente Kabinet, and then Dekmantel Selectors in Croatia. And right now, the man known for his unrivalled technical nous is in a fine run of form. His recent, self-released EP is another testament to his ability to skew house, techno and breaks into his own imaginative forms. Following on from releases on Hessle Audio, Bleep and an album on PAN, it is another boon in his fine discography. 

And he is just as impressive across a 90 plus minute selection for us: it finds him serving up a cavernous world of intricate and hi fidelity sounds that are abstract and unusual. Moving through sparse minimal soundscapes into pummelling but atmospheric drum tracks and on to jungle, dub and experimental worldly rhythms, it is a wildly compelling and singular selection filled with unusual sounds that often leaving you wondering WTF?!

This one's personal. 
Humour me for an hour or so and take a journey back to the early 90s, where my future love of jungle/D&B began. Before I had the courage and financial means to venture into indie record shops, I was seeking out breakbeat rave gems nestling on commercial dance compilations like Deep Heat and Thin Ice, watching toytown rave (doubtless resentfully) aired on TOTP, loving hoover noises on Dance Energy, picking up bargain 7” and cassette singles in Woolworths, HMV and Rival, and taping early Kickin, XL and Rising High records off my schoolmates. Although I’ve brushed some of the cheesier stuff under the carpet, this is an authentic selection of some all-time favourite tunes from back then, and it was an absolute joy to put together. Last track honours go to Acen's 'Close Your Eyes', the first track that had me shelling out the full £3.99 for the 12", included in its entirety for the wonderful final breakdown. 

Importantly, this mix reminded me of the time I had a compilation tape made for me by Lez, my Dad’s band manager, who understood precisely the kind of noisy futuristic music I was bang into. I must have been around 15. Opening with Baby Ford’s ‘Fetish’, it was the first place I heard Beltram’s ‘Energy Flash’, Spectrum’s ‘Brazil’, Techno Grooves ‘Christ!!!’ plus a load of other great Euro Techno. Damn, that mixtape has a lot to answer for, it was pure gold. RIP Lez, and Dad - this mix is for you.

Aphex Twin Obscurities Mix Part III (09/04/2020)

Compiling tracks for the 4th in my Rave Kid series got me thinking about what separates these from the beardier Evolution of Hardcore proto-D&B mixes, and as I scanned over a handful of my fave Sy and Slipmatt tapes from '93 the answer was crystal clear: great big huge blatant samples, rave riffs, breakbeats with stomping kickdrums, acid lines and the odd chipmunk. Mixed it up with a bit of darkside/jungle techno of course, but it's the cheerfully stomping exuberance of Wishdokta et al that's central to the vibe here. Anyway, I shan't dissect this too much, just pop it on nice and loud and enjoy the weekend yeah? L8rzzzz X

Autobiography Of A Rave Kid Part V

Been idly planning this one for a while. All credit to Greg @kolanut for the inspiration - after listening to his excellent space/illness themed mixes a while ago, I knew I was going to have to do an aquatic concept mix at some point. 

Why water? Like many other Pisceans, I don’t buy into the astrology bullshit whatsoever. However, there's something special about the overlap between music and water in nature that I love in both a literal sense - tracks that feature the sound of raindrops, waves crashing etc. - and as an abstract. Evidently I’m not the only one - the ‘floaty’ aesthetic of some of the more ambient side of D&B lends itself nicely to an aquatic theme. Granted, I’ve no idea whether tracks titled ‘River Of Dreams’ or ‘Mysteries Of The Deep’ would conjure up the same vibe under a different name, but it really doesn’t matter. Most of these tunes I’ve known for a long, long time – for me the titles are inextricably linked to the music and so form part of the narrative here.

Thinking about it, I’m not even sure why it took so long to get around to this mix, as planning and executing it was possibly more enjoyable than any other I’ve done. Working with a specific theme provides a nice excuse to bring together styles and producers that on the face of it might not seem an obvious match, the main task being to figure out some kind of continuity. It was also a great opportunity to trawl the internet for watery track titles and discover a handful of hitherto unknown pearls. Rest assured I’ve got plenty more set aside :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part One)

Onwards with the aquatic jungle and I've gotta tell you, this one is pretty special to me, so I've been sitting on it for a few weeks. I've had some incredible post-millennium tunes such as Aquatica and Dark Water in my shortlist since the inception of this series, so this marks my first foray out of the 90s: selecting D&B and some halftime bits from across the last two decades with a handful of 90s tunes spliced in. Bit of an epiphany really as most of this selection comes from an era that I have long overlooked in favour of the 92-97 sound. Yes, you may question the 'jungle' of the title but once you coin a name and a template you're stuck with it - besides that, it's all jungle to me mate :)

Also heavily influenced by the seminal Ed Rush & Trace 'No U-Turn Experience' One In The Jungle set from way back when, I guess this is my 2020 take on that post-apocalyptic vibe ... updated with a selection spanning vintage D&B, techstep, dark Y2K choppage and modern jungle/half-time.

Dystopia

The Dystopia Mix

Following on from the bleak desolation of the Dystopia mix, here's one that evokes happier times. 

Journey with me back to 1996 - a time when a young DJ Smart and his best pal MC/DJ Cruise (now a middle-aged Selectabwoy and Olly WiseGuise respectively) fearlessly ventured from the south-west to Northumbria uni, bringing the rolling vibes of our hometown to the north-east, armed with little more than a crate of wax and a big bag of skunk each - well, that's how I like to remember it.

It was a fantastic time of sheer abandon and wilfully outrageous hedonism - and as you might imagine, many of the memories are blurred in the fog of time and substance abuse. Without the ubiquitous tyranny of cameraphones and social media to preserve our nefarious activities, all I can really tell you is that we went for it, hard... but I can at least recall a few of the DJ sets at house parties and club nights (including our own Wax On Wax Off venture); spinning old skool hardcore that I was picking up for 50p a pop in 10-15 Music Exchange (that no other fucker seemed to know about); Olly on mic duties for luminaries such as Randall & A Guy Called Gerald (I have no recollection of the latter but am reliably assured it did happen); the two of us playing b2b supporting the likes of Ed Rush, Kemi & Storm; the mitsi-fuelled pride of seeing Roni Size's Reprazent tearing it up on stage in Middlesborough during their first UK tour. Not to mention all the townie nights out. It was the best of times. 

My cue for the selection here comes primarily from mine & Olly's record bags of the era, inspired in turn from an obscure Venn diagram intersection between the legendary Bristol Ruffneck Ting nights, the all-important One In The Jungle shows, and, 300 miles further north, my first impression of the northern D&B scene: L Double's trademark dreads bouncing up and down as he played to the half-empty upstairs room of some seedy topless bar in South Shields. He still rinsed it out proper though - Lee's selections back then really encapsulated everything I find great about this era: a weighty, crowd-pleasing mix of jump-up, rollers and techstep, blended to perfection. Forward a year or so and D&B was all over Newcastle as it was everywhere else, but it's those first memories that really stick in my mind. 

Big shout to Olly first and foremost, and our long-lost crew - Pottsy, Bailey, Jon Waco, Chris Weir, Mark Dowie... Scotty (howay play the game lads) - I hope this mix finds you again someday. Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.
