If you live on the West Coast and enjoy House Music, chances are you're aware of the infamous Gene Lee. Besides being a hometown hero DJ, he's also a master in the studio and is responsible for helping produce much of the electronic dance music coming out of Seattle today.. Known primarily for his signature Deep House and Nu-Disco sound, Gene has taken a new musical direction after being inspired by the deeper side of the Drum & Bass one early morning on the Playa.

Once back in the city, Gene wanted to capture that emotion he felt that morning at Burning Man and called on Seth aka Grym and Rob Noble to help record a studio mix called "The Hero's Journey" which first shaped this collective of musicians, DJ's, and artist that we have today, DEEP N BASS.

This is the 5th and final mix coming from our residents and we can't thank you enough for all the amazing support and love we've received! We'll be taking submissions for future releases, both mixes and original production. If you feel your music is inline with the DEEP N BASS sound, please send us a message. This is the 20th chapter (bloody 20!!!) in a series of mixes called 'trust me i was there' where I'm mixing records that were big on the radio stations I listened to and played on, and the clubs/raves I went to and played at.

This mix is pt 8 from 1992 - a massively important year for uk music development in the early jungle scene - in this mix there's music from Foul Play, Ruffige Kru, Tom n Jerry, Tango, DJ SS and a few others - including the anthem that still gets played today - Bukem's mix of Atlantis. 

When I was doing this mix i remembered where i heard Darkman 'dark as it gets' first - it was Randall at Orange, Holloway road. Vibes.

Big up all the folks that message me and say they play these mixes at house parties, makes my day!!

We’re delighted to present the 16th Bassic mix, this time with drum and bass legend Digital at the controls.

The last couple of years have seen the veteran producer return in an astounding manner, with a plethora of releases to his name in that time. Digital collaborated with Spirit for ‘The Wolf EP’ on Metalheadz, debuted on Dispatch with ‘Red Alert’ and still found time to make appearances on Horizons, Ingredients, V Recordings, Commercial Suicide and many more.

With Phantom Audio’s first release since 2013 out last week, attention is now turning to another of Digital’s imprints in Function (which this year has released the highly sought-after Dub Phizix remix of ‘Deadline’ and the hard-hitting collab with Drumsound & Bassline Smith ‘Bail Out’) where there’s a huge project in the pipeline. The various artists and collaboration only album is penned for a spring release and will feature the likes of Digital, Spirit, Total Science, Klute, Om Unit, Amit, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Nomine, Need For Mirrors, Response and more.

In September last year, we teamed up with SCAR and our old pals at Metalheadz to bring you an exclusive premiere of 'Caged'. Now, as the duo return with a savage remix of Rufige Kru classic 'Dark Rider', we've got an exclusive SCAR mix to get your Saturday night started early.

SCAR is the joint project of Survival and Script, who together turn out menacing, hard-edged drum & bass. Their remix of 1992 track 'Dark Rider' features on the 2-track Goldie presents Rufige Kru EP, alongside a new VIP of 'Beachdifta' featuring vocals from Cleveland Watkiss. The release continues Goldie's long-awaited return, which the 'Headz boss kicked off with 'Broken Man' at the end of last year.

In the spirit of the release, SCAR have cooked up an 'Old Skool Headz Mix', packed with golden oldies from the likes of Dillinja, Doc Scott, Adam F and more.

Another fortunate discovery on a sketchily-labelled tape - Roni Size presenting One In The Jungle. Going by the list on RDB I'm assuming this is the show broadcast on 01/08/1997. Besides the mix, bonuses include a chat with Bryan Gee, and nice to hear that Roni came equipped with a bunch of the old Full Cycle Galaxy Radio jingles!
Recording gets a little glitchy for part of the first side, maybe this was due to my tuner playing up, as this came off a TDK SA90 which were pretty damn solid. The AR90s were always the best though. Massive shout to TDK!

*Edit* JJ has noticed that the broadcast began with Krust's 'Check Dis Out' and ends with 'Funktion'. I must have grabbed a random tape and hit record halfway through the B side... not planning on fixing this anytime soon though ;-)

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
