Continuing my hardcore revival, I've made a return to the Rave Kid series... such is my enthusiasm for this music right now that I've smashed out four new volumes already, and feel like I've got more in the tank. Been sat on Part 7 for a few weeks, and must confess I've been enjoying it massively: a selection drifting somewhere between my favourite Ratty, Sy & Slipmatt tapes with a few personals that I've been keeping back. So much creativity and energy packed into these old tunes, love it.

Last mix of the year is the most theoretically* expensive mix that I can make from my vinyl collection, according to Discogs prices determined on 24/11/2022: 30 tracks of the most luxurious/overpriced jungle imaginable, just in time for the festive season. Photek, Tango, Koda, Chaos & Julia Set, Trace, more Photek, Skanna, Bukem, Crystl... the gang's all here. 

*record and sleeve condition notwithstanding. A few of them came to me second hand, feature heavy cue-burn/stickering, plus years of toddler/cat abuse has wrecked many of the sleeves ... besides, I'd never try to sell them, they mean way too much to me :) 

Big shout to DJ Mafs @mafsone for casually quoting the value of one of his outstanding recent mixes and planting the idea... I take 'cogs prices with a punch of salt, frankly it's a ludicrous scene that I want no part of, but the concept of using value to dictate the selection seemed like fun. Having catalogued my collection a few years ago, after skimming a few pages of the priciest cuts I decided this could be the makings of quite a decent mix. I realise folks out there like Law, Dokta Venom, X Nation, djExtreme and so on could probably knock out a mix of equal value with a dozen tunes, but it is what it is. Might have to do a sub-155bpm follow-up sometime, a techno version (if you think jungle prices are crazy check out Warp's Artificial Intelligence 1 LP), or possibly The Cheap Mix ... could be interesting ... but I'm kicking all of that into the long grass for now. 2023's a new year.

The Pricy Mix

A second journey into the more esoteric sample roots of breakbeat culture. Like the first mix it's an anything-goes, multi-genre mash-up with reconstructions, set-pieces and references to numerous hardcore, jungle and DnB tunes from back in the day. Had loads of fun sourcing the tracks and piecing them together; once again I've pushed the boundary of my own sanity during the construction, but hopefully it was worth it.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
