This is a special mix recorded by one of the most important figures in the UK jungle scene at present, Tim Reaper is flying the flag high for the genre. pushing new boundaries with his exceptional approach to sound design and a nod to the legacy which has gone before him. 

Over the past ten years Tim has grafted, releasing a sprawling array of music on respected labels such as Skeleton Recordings, Dark Age Recordings, Omni and more. 

Earlier this year he released a new EP on Lobster Theremin, a record label which never fails to capture the imagination, releasing left of centre electronics across the spectrum of dance music. The EP showcases Tim Reaper's modern approach to jungle and D&B in the present and features collaborations with Massachusetts breakccore producer Devnull. 

Anyway, we invited him to record a mix for us and what he has delivered is a whirlwind exploration through wicked breaks, euphoric soundscapes and beyond.

Here's a personal fave from recent weeks/months - the third instalment of the Bristol-Newcastle connection, centred on a specific time around the end of '95/early '96. 

This mix is an attempt to capture the happy memories I have of the music back then, and they don't get much better than Randall & GQ's mindblowing Ruffneck Ting Xmas '95 set at Lakota, witnessed with my man Olly @wiseguisedjs, back from his first term up north. L Double and Kenny Ken's superb sets from the preceding events also bear a heavy influence on my selection here. Back to the selection, and musically speaking, there's a melting-pot of styles to consider. Leaving aside the more atmospheric GLR-esque D&B, Jungle in its pure, ragga/reggae-influenced sense was still in effect, but the dominant sound of the dancefloor now bore a heavy hip-hop influence - represented here by Trouble On Vinyl, S.O.U.R. and Ganja/Frontline (the Still Smokin' LP was destroying everything in its path), which paired beautifully with the stripped-back rollers of the time. From the jazz-tinted efforts of the Full Cycle crew, D-Bridge and Swift to tougher releases from The Dream Team and Lemon D, I regard these as the DJ-friendly glue holding the best of this era's sets together. In amongst all of this we have the tear-out element - superb melodies from Jonny L, The X and DJ Rap mingling with the brutal futurism of Dillinja and the Ram/Liftin Sprits crew. What a time it was; I hope this mix does it some justice.

N3SW: The Bristol-Newcastle Connection Part III

You can rightfully argue Jungle Techno was born in 92 (although the label was used as early as 91) but 1993 was when it really came into it's own, some like to attribute it purely to the Basement/Ron Wells sound but for me and many others it was generally the 93 sound of Jungle and very fuzzy lines exist between what was also termed Jungle Hardcore and Darkcore. Regardless it was still well and truly the prototype period and still a wonderful fusion before becoming more defined and divided in the next couple of years.
Right now there is a great new wave of producers fleshing out this sound (and Jungle and Hardcore in general) as it had such a small window which is exciting to see for us that have been into it since the early 90's.
So before heading back off overseas again I am happy to knock out this vinyl mix without too many of the usual classics which have kinda been overkilled for me(although Meditation and Bang The Drums made the cut) such as a previously unreleased Ratty dubplate, a couple of underplayed Detroity Reinforced tracks and even some ravey Techno/Trance tunes that were personal favs on some classic  tapes from Sydney's bygone era. Deep Jungle I

Following my increasingly ludicrous claim that Eclectic Mix 4 would be the final of the series, I have to admit sample-digging is way too addictive to put down. 
Having sparked my nostalgia for the real deal old-skool hardcore during the techno sample-spotters mix, this rapidly snowballed into almost four months of painstaking, mind-fucking graft, culminating in Eclectic Mix 5… hardcore special, 1991-1993. Reconstructions, VIPs, sample mash-ups, a truckload of breaks, chipmunk vocals … all that good shit. 

This time it’s over 300 original samples chopped up, pitched up, juxtaposed, generally fucked about with and repurposed into an extended tribute to the soundtrack of my yout’. Ahhhh… back to the days of watching Moby on TOTP (or was it Dance Energy? Big up Normski)… buying up XL and Rising High 12”s without hesitation from Our Price….  first hearing Acen’s ‘Close Your Eyes’ and SUAD’s ‘Green Man’ on Warehouse Raves 6 on a mate’s walkman at school and knowing things would never be the same again… religiously taping the Sublove shows…. desperately waiting for 4 Hero’s Journey From The Light to hit the shelves… all defining moments that stick in my mind. 
I concede then that this is a very personal mix, and could never be an exhaustive representation of artists from the era (which would be frankly impossible due to constraints of time, sanity and the fact that certain legendary labels - Basement spring to mind - didn’t use that many samples), nevertheless if you like your old skool you’ll probably like this mix. That said, If you make it to the end in one sitting I’ll be well impressed. Only for the headstrong.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
