Jungle explorer

Compilation mixes of my favourite tracks, old and new, from the world of hardcore, jungle and drum & bass. Mostly my own vinyl and CD rips alongside more recently acquired digital, initally put together with DJay 2 following the demise of my turntables; however most stuff I do nowadays is sequenced for maximum rollout potential, cheeky edits and ting - audacity/ableton live.

Selectabwoy's Old Skool Hardcore/Jungle/D&B Mixes

Well this is possibly the dumbest idea I've had yet: collating thirty of the most heinous spelling & grammatical errors in jungle/hardcore history and putting them in a mix.

Typos are one of many endearingly genuine hallmarks of homegrown, DIY scenes like hardcore and jungle, and I've always had a strange fascination with them. For the selection process, one very simple rule applied: a blatant mistake in the artist or track name had to be present on the original label or sleeve artwork. (Not really fair to shoot fish in a barrel, so 90s jungle compilations were deemed off-limits, the only exception being compilation exclusives).

Arguably the tracklist is the main event here, and I’ve included bonus details verbatim from the label/sleeve wherever I could find them, but as it turned out the mix itself was a joy to put together. Obscure research briefs like this usually throw up a few tunes I've never heard before, and as is often the case they're great ... some are phenomenal.

Shouts out and big <3 to the featured artists and labels; for the music of course, but also the casual oversight, wanton misuse of apostrophes, utterly inexplicable brainfarts, bad handwriting transcriptions by stoned artworkers, and anything else that made this selection possible.

(Before I start on the main event, it's exactly six years to the day that I got up at 5am to assemble the first Eclectic (Jungle) Samples mix on my phone. Oddly, I was reminded of this while blearily looking at my phone after the neighbours' screaming effing kids woke me up at 5am. Anyway, 25/11/2016 was a Friday too so this feels like a special occasion to me, and I want to send a great big shout to my pal Olly for listening through the mix with me all those years ago. If you've not heard it then I'm going to be bold and suggest that you might like to, and if you have then why not revisit?

It's a Champion Ting. This is the first in a quadrilogy of mixes that follow on chronologically from the Summer of '94 series. There's been a heavy emphasis on summertime jungle with both those, the Summer of '95, and Back to Brighton St. mixes - a tribute to the Xmas '94 period is way overdue, and here it begins. 
Ruffneck Ting's 'Champion Ting' event* at Bristol Trinity Centre, 10/12/1994, was the first real jungle night I went to; that, and their subsequent 'Tequila Ting' event* at Lakota in Jan '95 really left their mark on me. I mean, "Selektor Bwoy". Man, it's impossible to put into words what the vibe was like then - jungle was just, SO jungle hehe - so I've assembled four mixes to do the talking. Every tune here sparks memories like it was yesterday. Massive shout again to the @ruffneck-ting crew and to everyone that made these nights so awesome. Big love <3

This night was special! I'm super happy to share this live recording of the last @not-in-my-house event at Humboldthain with all of you. It took me a while to get a recording that also captures some of the vibes of this party, so I'm really excited that it finally worked out. The last year with Not In My House has been a really exciting one and had a huge impact on my musical journey. 

Thanks to everyone who's been part of this project so far! I'm really looking forward to 2023 and plenty more events like that last.

1. Who is your favorite jungle producer?
M-Beat, that man made some tunes back in the day, got dealt the shitty end of the stick and doesn't get enough props in my opinion. Glad he's making tunes again.

2. What are some upcoming releases you have coming out?
There are 4 tunes coming out on PPJ, Big up Drew and Aaron. There are another 4 tunes coming out on digital, through Amen Theory, big up Ellis! Other than that, I'm sat on loads and after some tweaks, I'll start getting them sent out and see what happens.

3. I think you're into cars, so if you had an unlimited budget, what would be your dream car?
I'd buried the petrol head for a fair while, but started getting bored and he's out of the box again, dream car is an easy one, Proper Porsche 911, no driver aids, just a steel body, rwd, and boost!

Summer Of '95 (Part Four)

A little pre-Xmas treat: rewinding 29 years to the winter of 1994 for what will likely be the final Champion Ting mix. 

Been sat on this for a couple of months and must confess that I like it a lot; a mix of old faves and obscure stuff dug up from hazy memories, old tapes and full cycle shows. Minutiae of the construction include the ages spent fruitlessly searching for my Sweet Love and Stamina CD singles, before realising I had ripped them to mp3 years ago, presumably before binning them (idiot). Actually listening to the Red Light record for the first time in years instead of just using the intro (the same one DJ Hype rinsed) and just loving that Tracy Chapman sample. Realising I had somehow never heard Marv Cain's mindbogglingly catchy 'Believe It', sorely (albeit understandably) overlooked in favour of The Hitman. Yeah man, there's some great stuff on here, and it finishes up the best way I could muster with Peshay's masterpiece, The Piano Tune.

Aquatic Jungle (Part Five)

Been idly planning this one for a while. All credit to Greg @kolanut for the inspiration - after listening to his excellent space/illness themed mixes a while ago, I knew I was going to have to do an aquatic concept mix at some point. 

Why water? Like many other Pisceans, I don’t buy into the astrology bullshit whatsoever. However, there's something special about the overlap between music and water in nature that I love in both a literal sense - tracks that feature the sound of raindrops, waves crashing etc. - and as an abstract. Evidently I’m not the only one - the ‘floaty’ aesthetic of some of the more ambient side of D&B lends itself nicely to an aquatic theme. Granted, I’ve no idea whether tracks titled ‘River Of Dreams’ or ‘Mysteries Of The Deep’ would conjure up the same vibe under a different name, but it really doesn’t matter. Most of these tunes I’ve known for a long, long time – for me the titles are inextricably linked to the music and so form part of the narrative here.

Thinking about it, I’m not even sure why it took so long to get around to this mix, as planning and executing it was possibly more enjoyable than any other I’ve done. Working with a specific theme provides a nice excuse to bring together styles and producers that on the face of it might not seem an obvious match, the main task being to figure out some kind of continuity. It was also a great opportunity to trawl the internet for watery track titles and discover a handful of hitherto unknown pearls. Rest assured I’ve got plenty more set aside :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part One)

Onwards with the aquatic jungle and I've gotta tell you, this one is pretty special to me, so I've been sitting on it for a few weeks. I've had some incredible post-millennium tunes such as Aquatica and Dark Water in my shortlist since the inception of this series, so this marks my first foray out of the 90s: selecting D&B and some halftime bits from across the last two decades with a handful of 90s tunes spliced in. Bit of an epiphany really as most of this selection comes from an era that I have long overlooked in favour of the 92-97 sound. Yes, you may question the 'jungle' of the title but once you coin a name and a template you're stuck with it - besides that, it's all jungle to me mate :)

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
