If you're into Ibiza Records — or jungle for that matter — you'll know who Paul 'Ibiza' Chambers is. Co-boss of the label alongside James Stephens of Noise Factory, the rave promoter set up the label to cross-pollinate electronic sounds within UK soundsystem culture. As a result, many credit him with the invention of jungle. 
After consistently dropping riddims by the likes of Noise Factory, Potential Bad Boy and 2 Wiseman during the '90s, he's set up off-shoots like 3rd Party and Kemet to cater for diversity. And now, he's back. After working in the studio for four years with Jonny Dubs to develop “jungle dub” — a new jungle/dub hybrid sound at 160bpm — he's garnered over six-hours of exclusive tunes and teamed up with Digital Niyabinghi, a 29-stack soundsystem with a crew (feat. Uncle Dugs, Ragga Twins, Potential Badboy and more) to play the beats they've made across the UK and beyond.

Final mix of the year is my take on the mighty Jungle Massive 4: Jungle Versus The Hardsteppers, the last instalment of the legendary series from Labello Blanco/PWL International ... big ups to scene legend Jimmy Low (aka Macka Brown/MC Kann) and the artical OJ himself, Pete Waterman...

Four years ago I did my own festive mix of Jungle Massive Volume 2 (https://on.soundcloud.com/kadto). Just four days after that I had the files set up to have a crack at Volume 4, but it's taken all this time to get my shit together sufficiently to tackle the 32 tracks on offer. I've had the official Gachet & Micky Finn mixtapes up for a while, so why bother? Well - for one, the mixes themselves aren't without their flaws ... but beyond that, I wanted to mash all the tunes up together in a continuous mix, rather than observing the original hardstep/jungle split. I'm not sure it ever made sense to me really - I guess you can retrospectively substitute 'drum & bass' for 'hardstep' in the sense that there's more ragga/soundclash flavour in the junglist half, but nowadays this is splitting hairs. It's a jungle compilation pure and simple, and easily one of the best going. 

Man, there's some brilliant tunes on it. Plenty of specials: 'Slow Down', 'Back To My Roots', '9mm' and 'Theme From Daddy Armshouse' stand out, all absolutely wicked and genuinely exclusive to the LP. (It just occurred to me that - unless you know otherwise - Nookie's effort is the earliest example of swingbeat/clownstep, a slice of pure class built around the b-line from Aaron Neville's 'Hercules'). Add to that a shit-ton of excellent VIPs including the superb Sky (DJ Kane VIP) from Just Jungle, Monk's Nu Jack City, Marv Cain's Gunman, Aphrodite's Bomber and MTS's Baad Boy Sound. Beyond that, the 'regular' tunes in there hold several of my all-time faves among their number - Steppaz Anthem! Vintage Wash! Roll On, Crisis, Legalise, The Dreamer ...and then Final Chapta and Babylon Trace Part 2... Labello weren't messing around, this is a filler-free zone. The selection also forced me into doing the Arsonist/Fire mash-up I've been daydreaming about for years, keep an ear out for that one :)

Back in the early 90s, Paul Ibiza’s Ibiza Records label introduced the underground to a form of music they called jungle techno. Compacted with reggae bass lines, techno sound palettes and distinctly dancehall flavours, the sounds pioneered by outfits like Noise Factory, Potential Badboy and Ibiza himself helped influence the evolution of the jungle genre. Striking in their rawness, the ideas that the productions manage to wrap up still feel relevant now, some 24 years later. 

Returning with a new sound that he calls jungle dub, under the name Digital Niyabinghi, Paul Ibiza’s managed to once again channel the pioneering spirit of jungle into his new productions, working to maximize the space and bass pressure of his frequencies. Rooted firmly in soundsystem culture and still acting as a truly independent figure, he’s kindly elected to share a brand new and unheard track, ‘Nite And Day Dub,’ with the world ahead of his impending appearance in the Rompa’s Reggae Shack hosted Room Three on Friday 19th December.

It’s not often you see a seasoned veteran of the scene release a debut solo EP a quarter of a century into their career as an artist, but in this case Aries’ was certainly worth the wait. Having released material on practically every Jungle label worth their salt, including Congo Natty, Dread, V Recordings, Run Tingz Recordings & Chopstick Dubplate - it is Bristol’s Ramajam Recordings that have finally thrown down the gauntlet on what is Birmingham’s finest’s most captivating project to date, ‘Year Of The Goat EP’.

The Chopstick co-owner has employed a solid sound across this project that really does embody the heart and soul of this music in 2015; 4 original tracks plus an instrumental that you expect to stand the test of time, in a ruthless scene where these days protracted shelf life is somewhat of a myth.

‘Year Of The Goat EP’ pays homage to a modern-purist-Jungle sound that is hard to come by in an age of sample pack jump up - this is really something Aries has done with great aplomb over the years.

'Dancehall Ruler' features the energy and vocal talents of Blackout JA, delivering a catchy number that Aries produced using only played in instruments, no samples whatsoever.

'Vicious' takes you back to a euphoric level with an addictive vocal, rugged drums and a driving bassline.

'I Need You' takes a similar stance, riding along the euphoric journey with up to date production techniques and dancefloor destroying vibe.

'Ways Of The Underground' takes you all the way back to the days of United States Of Drum and Bass, the mid 90's flow and toxic bass truly show his understanding of this music.

The EP also features a bonus track in the form of an instrumental version of 'Dancehall Ruler'.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
