First upload of 2024 and I'm back on the eclectic samples tip.  Damn, it's been a while… over three years since the reggae special.  I solemnly promised to never inflict this misery on myself again; but in truth, the break must have done me good - it's been thoroughly enjoyable. 

This one came about after a sustained period of listening to mid-90s jump up jungle (just for a change eh) and thinking how nice it would be to do a straight boom-bap mix with a few of the tunes sampled in them. I have an enduring love of hip hop - primarily the early 90s golden age through to the later Rawkus-era stuff, and a fair bit either side.  Back in the day we were as equally obsessed with it as we were jungle/DnB, and it got way more serious when I discovered DMC videos and the Fat Beats import mixtapes down at Purple Penguin, leading me in turn to discover the unparalleled joys of hip hop mixing, buying and stickering up countless double copies.  Therein lay a big issue for me when considering this mix: a straight hip-hop set should be done on the 1s and 2s, as god (or Primo, for fellow atheists) intended. Certainly not with ableton…  

Forced to come up with something more elaborate, and with an extensive, colour-coded spreadsheet completed, I duly threw a couple of hundred classic cuts, acapellas, instrumentals and a bunch of tangential samples in the blender - and here we are.  It's all hip hop this time - no more breakbeat/jungle reconstructions, I'm long done with that.  Above all else this is a tribute to the classic 4-track mixtapes I grew up with, but with enough sly references to jungle/D&B wedged in to keep the sample nerds happy.  Featured artists include KRS-One, Brandy, Mary J Blige, Wu-Tang, Def Squad, Mobb Deep, Biggie, DJ Quik, Ice Cube, Tribe, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, TLC, Big L, Kool G Rap and many more, plus a couple of eclectic interludes and the obligatory overblown intro.  99% of this sampled on numerous releases from the likes of No U-Turn, Emotif, Metalheadz, V/Philly Blunt/Chronic, Full Cycle/Dope Dragon, Frontline, Intalektive, Formation, Joker, Dread, yadda yadda.

Yes. This one’s all about the breaks.

We’re going back, way back to the foundation, with a selection of original soul and funk classics. Time for me to pay homage to some of the original artists, notably the drummers, that gave us the backbone of hardcore, jungle & DnB.

Put this one together fairly quickly, choppy mixing, no messing about, just wanted to let the tracks speak for themselves. They’re all listed below and I'll probably throw in a few examples of break usage for anyone who's fussed.  Most of these are pretty well-known but I’ve thrown in a few lesser-sampled ones. This is a mix I’ve wanted to do for ages; I’m only scratching the surface, could have kept hunting these tracks down forever, but you gotta draw the line somewhere! Less than a day after finishing the mix I discover Lucille Brown & Billy Clark’s ‘Both Eyes Open’... a personal favourite. Fuck it, it's going on the next mix.

Give Me A Break! - 15/11/2016

First of the eclectic hardcore/jungle sample-spotter mix series.
It's a selection spanning multiple genres from the 60's to the 90's, the common thread being - as ever - that each track was sampled by the hardcore/rave/jungle/DnB scenes - some have just one signature sample, others have been rinsed. Some of these records are incredibly obscure, dug up with help from the RolldaBeats and WhoSampled camps - others are long-standing personal favourites of mine.
This time I've included a few cheeky set-pieces based around reconstructions of hardcore/jungle tracks, or at least paying tribute to them, so keep an eye out for D'Cruze's Bass Go Boom, 4 Hero's darkside classics Journey From The Light and The Element; a trio of Foul Play samples, a cut-up reconstruction of Leviticus' The Burial, a 115bpm tribute to DJ Hype's Tiger Style, and plenty more besides. I can assure you that no jungle records were harmed in the making of this mix, original sources only. And they are so good. As ever - hope you enjoy.

A second journey into the more esoteric sample roots of breakbeat culture. Like the first mix it's an anything-goes, multi-genre mash-up with reconstructions, set-pieces and references to numerous hardcore, jungle and DnB tunes from back in the day. Had loads of fun sourcing the tracks and piecing them together; once again I've pushed the boundary of my own sanity during the construction, but hopefully it was worth it.

Eclectic Samples Mix Part IV - 07/05/2017

This mix is essentially Techno for the Junglist Sample-Spotters, but also a vague history of techno – from Kraftwerk, through Detroit and Acid house, into Sheffield Bleep and Euro Techno of the early 90s (the era I grew up with), with bits of ambient, house, rave and hardcore thrown in. Interspersed with plenty of random tracks, break loops and samples to enrich the experience, and loads of reconstructions and references to classic hardcore and jungle (SL2, The Untouchables, Nebula 2, DJ Mayhem, Peshay, Intense, D.O.P.E. and Nasty Habits among others).

'Sup. I've emerged from retirement for a detailed exploration of reggae samples in jungle/D&B :)

A bit like the hip-hop & ‘give me a break’ samples mixes, this one's a laidback affair without any breakbeat/reconstruction stuff, but it covers the gamut of dub, reggae, roots & ragga (with some easter eggs chucked in), so I figured it can be part of the eclectic series. Note that I've taken pains here not to duplicate anything from the previous mixes, so if you get to the end and think (for example) 'where the fuck was Chase The Devil?', hopefully you'll trawl back through the playlist to find it.

In all honesty it was great fun to pull together, and I owe thanks to Matt (aka Rollin) over at Dogs on Acid for planting the idea. To divert briefly, this rekindling of my love for reggae came directly off the back of a mix I recently did for the Dubs On Acid Collective, an amazing charity project with some seriously talented guys. Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
