Dubmission celebrate the release of Pitch Black's Futureproof on vinyl by going back to the era that it was made, the late 90's. MIKE from PITCH BLACK's selection features some of the tunes he was listening to at the time of recording, while Dubberson from Kog Transmissions, the original label, has made a mix of late 90's New Zealand electronica.

To celebrate the vinyl release of Pitch Black's debut album, 23 years after it first came out, Mike decided to look back at some of the music he was listening to as Futureproof was being developed. Enjoy an hour long sonic journey from 1996 to 1998, taken from some of the CDís Mike shipped to London when he moved there from Auckland.

FM036: Ben Sims presents Dub Revolution

For the FM regulars you'll know that Ben Sims' Saturday morning excursions into reggae, dub and lovers rock are a Field Maneuvers staple; a way to blow off the cobwebs from the night before for hungover steppas. For the uninitiated, and those who're maybe wanting to extend Notting Hill Carnival for another week, you're in for a real treat. 

Sims' love of downtempo Jamaican rhythms and music to groove to show us a different side to Ben, who is usually found making club foundations shake with 130BPM kick drums and high intensity techno. His record bag of rare reggae is deeper than a 5am smoking exit chat with a stranger, and we can't wait to bring it back to the field in just a few days time.

FM036: Ben Sims presents Dub Revolution

Deep Reggae and heavy Dub: this month we present a show by Mark Ernestus with Tikiman on the mic. As the founder of the legendary Berlin based Hard Wax record store he laid the foundation for Berlin's electronic club music scene in 1989. As one half of Basic Channel (aka Maurizio), he gained international fame with a hybrid of Dub and Techno. As part of the duo Rhythm & Sound he refined this signature sound alongside a range of vocalists - most extensively Tikiman aka Paul St. Hilaire. For Carhartt WIP Radio they prepared a mix loaded with rare gems by Reggae legends such as Prince Jazzbo, Nitty Gritty, or Ken Boothe. Tune in and get absorbed by real weigthy bass pleasure!

Imagine an alternate universe where best-selling gaming franchise ‘The Sims’ is about UK techno DJs and players have to take their avatar around the world, negotiating airport transfers and dodgy promoters, spend hours in hotel rooms eating chocolate out the mini bar, then play the gig in real time and head back to the airport on two hours sleep tweeting things like ‘Turin, you were amazing.’

Now imagine a universe where The Sims, aka UK techno DJ extraordinaire Ben Sims, owns the machine out of ‘The Fly’, except instead of mixing himself with a fly he merges with Kenny Ken and steps out as Benny Ben, dub specialist and vinyl junkie. You don’t need to imagine this universe because it’s our universe. It’s here. It’s now. It even includes some artistic licence about a Kenny Ken gene-splicing machine.

Benny Ben is Ben Sims’ real life avatar, as he’s already a techno DJ touring the world, eating chocolate out of mini-bars and tweeting stuff like ‘DJ Rebel Badboy reporting for duty’. Benny Ben travels, especially to a field in Oxford, but he spins rare, rootsy 12s and 45s of reggae, dub and lovers rock. Benny Ben loves soundsystem culture, body-moving bass and the sound of sunshine. Benny Ben is back to show us how it’s done.

Dubs on Acid is a collaboration between eight musicians, a DJ and an artist.

Every track on the album (with a couple of extras and alternate versions added in for good measure) has been expertly crafted into 'Duder’s Soundbwoy Flashback Mix', a DJ mix by Duderonomy.

The front cover is an original hand drawn illustration. A true work of art.

Both the DJ mix and high resolution copies of the artwork are included with the bandcamp album.

'Dreadlock Tales Studio' was founded in 1999 in the backwoods of
Sammatti, halfway between Turku and Helsinki in Finland. 'Dreadlock
Tales' live sets first started in 2004, with performances in the UK,
Italy, France, Lithuania, India, Nepal and Russia in addition to
countless shows in Finland.
In 2019, the studio escalated to the 'Dreadlock Tales Dub Sound System'
with a heavy arsenal of speaker boxes and the 'Dreadlock Tales Music'
label concentrating on releasing vinyl. The 'Dreadlock Tales' live dub
show was also updated to a setup of 16 channels mixed and dubbed live on
an analog mixing desk.
The strength of the 'Dreadlock Tales Dub Sound System' is the exclusive
dub plates produced at 'Dreadlock Tales Studio' dropping among the rich
selection of artists and labels around the world. One can find nordic
atmosphere fusing with east, south and west, making the sessions always
a multicultural experience.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
