I like how you have This Is LA in here. I had a CD of Platinum Breaks 01 with it, but it wasn't on most versions of the album. I also like how you have The Fury.

V Classic was an appetiser. Today I officially have 5K followers, and so I have a duo* of Platinum Breakz mixes for you all. 

Was great to rediscover this one in its extended CD form. As a paid-up Headz fan I already owned half of the content when the LP dropped in 1996, and so mentally pigeonholed it more as 'the album with Unofficial Ghost on it' than anything else. Listening back and structuring this mix 25 years later, I've realised what an exceptionally well-balanced and atmospheric collection this is, with many lighter moments that contrast with the filthy exclusives such as Armoured D and The Nocturnal.

Revisiting the Headz back catalogue left me itching to dig deeper and so I've curated an alternative mix: Platinum Breakz Inverted. Same era, same artist roster, different tunes ... show some love to this bad boy and it shall be yours by Xmas <3

Selectabwoy's Platinum Breakz Mix [5K Followers 1/2]

Second of the 5K celebrations, final mix of the year: a re-imagined, alternate Platinum Breakz ... inverted, if you will. Forgive the Tenet reference :)

The starting point here was Lemon D's This Is LA, a bonus track from the US PB1 release, which would have made it into the first mix had I realised in time. Choosing the rest was a piece of piss, but that 'exclusive' element provided by Unofficial Ghost et al was missing - so the selection is bolstered with a couple of unreleased dubs that emerged more recently on Infra-Red and Deep Jungle (Your Sound VIP is a no-brainer, and I'm sure Another Dimension was  destined for Headz). Add to that a few Razor's Edge joints and some classic Rufige Kru flavour - Manslaughter '96 (cheekily borrowed from Reinforced, as it first appeared on the flip of the Metropolis dubplate), and the mighty Fury from Saturnz Return - and we're good to go. Let's skirt over the fact Pressin' On came out on PB2, Hidden Agenda deserve a couple of spots this time around. The final line-up:

Played this set on Jungletrain to mark the 2nd anniversary of my late wife Louisa. It's mostly an atmospheric style mix featuring old and new tracks that I thought she'd like to hear if she was still with us here. It was the more musical and jazz influenced side of DnB that she was into mostly, rolling breaks and bounce-y b-lines especially, so dug out a few bits with those classic 808 style bass notes.

There's a tune in here that was made specially for her and also to give myself and my kids something positive in the aftermath of her death. 'Flowers' is an amazing musical tribute from a wicked producer and top bloke called D-Fect - you can check it out just after the 1 hour 40 minute mark. Watch out for it on a special memorial release on Subtle Audio / Bustle Beats sometime next year.

We miss you Lou but we hope you're still smiling, laughing and raising spirits now like you always did. Love you always.

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
