Woke up to 6000 followers so I thought I'd do an upload to mark the occasion.

It's unseasonal, but humour me. For the fourth 'Summer of '94' mix I wanted to get away from the mild beardstrokiness of preceding editions and bring it squarely back to the music I was hearing, buying and loving that summer. Obvious I know - but it never ceases to amaze me how music fixes memories in the mind. Forgive the stream of thought, but this selection takes me from summertime house parties in the posh suburbs, my final trip to Glastonbury (cheers Dad for the VIP privileges and the lift home, RIP x) ... to a two-week family camping holiday in France, soundtracked with a legendary DJ Sy cassette (acquired from aforementioned festival) and Dextrous' outstanding Time To Move/Rapid and the EZ Rollers 12" on repeat (freshly bought and hastily taped off while packing). All of this interspersed with Roni & Krust's regular shows on Galaxy Radio and live at Ashton Court ... and the girls, fuck's sake don't get me started, what it was to be 18 ... then into the Autumn with the Dreamscape XII tape pack, starting Foundation Art at UWE and meeting fellow junglist aficionado Olly G and his little bro Ell. Mate, weren't those just the best times? Must give a shout into the void to our alumni (lol) Chas, Toby, Donna & Nic and the hilarious double act of South African junglist Andy and his Spanish mate Damien - this was back in the pre-internet days of Chinese-whispered song IDs, and I can't forget Andy's stoned enthusiasm for 'Cool Fresh Air', 'Good Vibrations', 'Cool Runnings' and of course the killer 'she said the jungle, came alive and took it'... all present and correct in this mix. God I could talk endlessly about it; and you probably don't need to know about all the activities this music soundtracked - Mike M driving us to Weston-Super-Mare for some of the worst chavvy grab-a-granny nights I've been to, concussing myself running into a patio door (classic), watching endless Steven Seagal videos, playing SF2 on the SNES until sunrise. But I'm sure you can relate in some way? :)

(Before I start on the main event, it's exactly six years to the day that I got up at 5am to assemble the first Eclectic (Jungle) Samples mix on my phone. Oddly, I was reminded of this while blearily looking at my phone after the neighbours' screaming effing kids woke me up at 5am. Anyway, 25/11/2016 was a Friday too so this feels like a special occasion to me, and I want to send a great big shout to my pal Olly for listening through the mix with me all those years ago. If you've not heard it then I'm going to be bold and suggest that you might like to, and if you have then why not revisit?

It's a Champion Ting. This is the first in a quadrilogy of mixes that follow on chronologically from the Summer of '94 series. There's been a heavy emphasis on summertime jungle with both those, the Summer of '95, and Back to Brighton St. mixes - a tribute to the Xmas '94 period is way overdue, and here it begins. 
Ruffneck Ting's 'Champion Ting' event* at Bristol Trinity Centre, 10/12/1994, was the first real jungle night I went to; that, and their subsequent 'Tequila Ting' event* at Lakota in Jan '95 really left their mark on me. I mean, "Selektor Bwoy". Man, it's impossible to put into words what the vibe was like then - jungle was just, SO jungle hehe - so I've assembled four mixes to do the talking. Every tune here sparks memories like it was yesterday. Massive shout again to the @ruffneck-ting crew and to everyone that made these nights so awesome. Big love <3

Got some new Summer of '94 mixes sat here, but the weather is dire, so I'll go with this one to pass the time until the sun emerges. To give it its full name: Hard Leaders 6 Presents Jungle Dub 2. (Hard Leaders or Hardleaders? The CD says the latter but I'm going with the former). Anyway, it's a firm favourite of mine from back in the day, nice blend of ragga jungle and jazzy rolling vibes with a few exclusives in there; an absolute pleasure to mix. Enjoy.

Episode 495 comes to us from a favorite producer of mine, Worldwide Epidemic! Who as you will hear and see from the tracklist goes by different aliases too, Liquid, Daniel Silk, RWDS (Collab with Ron Wells). 

Worldwide's mix features forthcoming and released tunes some, hard and driving, others, lush, expansive, and beautiful, giving the mix a hands in the air, uplifting vibe!! Hardcore, Jungle Techno, and Jungle in this unbelievable mix that Worldwide absolutely crushes!!

A few more bits than I can't disclose just yet, but I am in a happy place with my recent output.

2. What is the best track you've produced and why?

That's a fantastic question and one I wish more people would ask respective artists. Before I answer I feel that the need to say that the creators prespective is a totally different one to the listeners. I find that the works you hold close to you often fail to have that impact on the listeners and vice versa. 

If I was to pick a couple of my productions then it would have to be "Portamental" and "Bells Of Arptazia". To me these two although 1 is Jungle Techno and the other is Jungle, they take you on a personal journey. These tunes mean a lot to me emotionally. 
"Portamental" was written in 2 parts 1st part back in 2016 where I was very much in my experimental exciting phase and developing my sound and part 2 was written in 2021 where I had a lot more production knowledge and these two situations combined make me feel this track is absolute Jungle Techno to its core in that Fast Floor mold but with my own edge on it. It reminds me of my younger days and how I am with music production today all in one track.
"Bells Of Arptazia" is special as I feel at the time of writing this, it will be one of the tracks that will have a big impact on me once released on Future Retro. Tim Reaper (who's been really excited about this release) personally delivered the masters to me in New Zealand when he was touring here and the idea for the track came when my kids and I were watching a kids film together and whenever they hear it not only the film but the track as well, it puts a smile on their faces.

3. Is a hot dog a sandwich or not a sandwich and why?

I love questions like this. To me a sandwich is a filling between two pieces of bread. My family used to call the sandwiches I made the "Danwich" due to the amount of fillings I'd cram into one. 
A hot dog is a filled roll so not a sandwich in my opinion.

Summer Of '95 (Part Four)

A little pre-Xmas treat: rewinding 29 years to the winter of 1994 for what will likely be the final Champion Ting mix. 

Been sat on this for a couple of months and must confess that I like it a lot; a mix of old faves and obscure stuff dug up from hazy memories, old tapes and full cycle shows. Minutiae of the construction include the ages spent fruitlessly searching for my Sweet Love and Stamina CD singles, before realising I had ripped them to mp3 years ago, presumably before binning them (idiot). Actually listening to the Red Light record for the first time in years instead of just using the intro (the same one DJ Hype rinsed) and just loving that Tracy Chapman sample. Realising I had somehow never heard Marv Cain's mindbogglingly catchy 'Believe It', sorely (albeit understandably) overlooked in favour of The Hitman. Yeah man, there's some great stuff on here, and it finishes up the best way I could muster with Peshay's masterpiece, The Piano Tune. 

As ever, enjoy the ride; you never know, I might find one more mix in my archives to round off the year. Big ups.

Ambient/atmospheric jungle is the perfect summer soundtrack for me, and these watery bastards are about as close to a Bukem-style mix as I've got so far. Been idly planning this one for a while. All credit to Greg @kolanut for the inspiration - after listening to his excellent space/illness themed mixes a while ago, I knew I was going to have to do an aquatic concept mix at some point. 

Why water? Like many other Pisceans, I don’t buy into the astrology bullshit whatsoever. However, there's something special about the overlap between music and water in nature that I love in both a literal sense - tracks that feature the sound of raindrops, waves crashing etc. - and as an abstract. Evidently I’m not the only one - the ‘floaty’ aesthetic of some of the more ambient side of D&B lends itself nicely to an aquatic theme. Granted, I’ve no idea whether tracks titled ‘River Of Dreams’ or ‘Mysteries Of The Deep’ would conjure up the same vibe under a different name, but it really doesn’t matter. Most of these tunes I’ve known for a long, long time – for me the titles are inextricably linked to the music and so form part of the narrative here.

Thinking about it, I’m not even sure why it took so long to get around to this mix, as planning and executing it was possibly more enjoyable than any other I’ve done. Working with a specific theme provides a nice excuse to bring together styles and producers that on the face of it might not seem an obvious match, the main task being to figure out some kind of continuity. It was also a great opportunity to trawl the internet for watery track titles and discover a handful of hitherto unknown pearls. Rest assured I’ve got plenty more set aside :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part One)

Oi oi.

I've thought about this many times, and have concluded that my favourite era of jungle music, hands-down, is the spring/summer period of 1994. 

To me it wasn't quite so apparent at the time - I wasn't venturing out to proper jungle nights until later that year, and my view was polarised by a monogamous record-buying relationship with artists and labels that I semi-religiously followed throughout 1993 - the likes of Dee Jay, Skanna, Moving Shadow, Basement and Reinforced. However, with the wisdom of hindsight, and particularly after listening to loads of summer sets from the likes of Brockie, Ron and Jack Frost, the melting pot of sounds is obvious and utterly wonderful. Ragga jungle was suddenly everywhere and yet there were still elements of hardcore/rave - uplifting pads, chipmunk diva vocals - throughout the music, with DJ sets effortlessly transitioning from Nookie to M-Beat, Foul Play to Brainkillers, Tek-9 to Kings of the Jungle. 

Simply put, it was a great time and this is my tribute to it. As ever, enjoy!

Summer Of '94 Jungle Selection (Part 1)

Onwards with the aquatic jungle and I've gotta tell you, this one is pretty special to me, so I've been sitting on it for a few weeks. I've had some incredible post-millennium tunes such as Aquatica and Dark Water in my shortlist since the inception of this series, so this marks my first foray out of the 90s: selecting D&B and some halftime bits from across the last two decades with a handful of 90s tunes spliced in. Bit of an epiphany really as most of this selection comes from an era that I have long overlooked in favour of the 92-97 sound. Yes, you may question the 'jungle' of the title but once you coin a name and a template you're stuck with it - besides that, it's all jungle to me mate :)

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
