This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’ and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film ‘the bomb’ a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. In December we performed it live at the Nobel peace prize ceremonies in Oslo which was in incredibly inspiring and moving experience for me. Back in 2016, Skee Mask and Zenker Brothers spontaneously attempted to play together at an afterparty in Prague, but after ten minutes the electricity failed. Two years later they finally had the opportunity to play a joint extended set for the first time - at Unsound Kraków 2018. The three DJs closed Saturday night in Hotel Forum with an expansive set building on adventurous forms of techno, jungle and broken beat, combining the collective interests of Ilian Tape. The set kicked off at 4am in the Ball Room.

this is the mix, consisting of Moving Shadow releases only, clocking in at 4 (four) hours and is the first mix of three. all tracks featured (except one) are from releases with catalogue numbers before 100 - roughly at that time there was a major change in drum&bass as a whole - it became more cold, nervous, machine-like and I felt emotionally more connected to the more soulful, atmospheric and jazzy stuff being released earlier than that.

as you might have figured out by now, I was - and still am, in a way - an addict of this fine label which managed to release a hell of an amount of most forefront quality drum&bass and jungle of it's time. I was so obsessed I had to get every single vinyl Moving Shadow release. after 250 or so releases, I still am halfway. for me, it was a label with unsurpassed quality/quantity ratio, with an unique sound, the cream of the crops, the icing on a chocolate cake. few other drum&bass labels have ever gotten close to this, most notably the Good Looking empire, Metalheadz.

if anyone should care, it was recorded using two stanton st-90 turntables, a numark dm3001x mixer and two stanton sk520 cartridges, meaning it's an all vinyl mix and recorded in one go.

as I said before, there are two more 4-hour moving shadow only sessions. my ultimate dream would be to re-record and re-master these mixes using digital copies, to ensure the best sound quality which the pieces of music contained definitely deserve. these mixes were intended to be a journey through the soundscape, the snapshot of mid-90s moving shadow world, therefore, my input is merely a vessel for the music.

Moving Shadow Mammoth Mix Part 1

Been idly planning this one for a while. All credit to Greg @kolanut for the inspiration - after listening to his excellent space/illness themed mixes a while ago, I knew I was going to have to do an aquatic concept mix at some point. 

Why water? Like many other Pisceans, I don’t buy into the astrology bullshit whatsoever. However, there's something special about the overlap between music and water in nature that I love in both a literal sense - tracks that feature the sound of raindrops, waves crashing etc. - and as an abstract. Evidently I’m not the only one - the ‘floaty’ aesthetic of some of the more ambient side of D&B lends itself nicely to an aquatic theme. Granted, I’ve no idea whether tracks titled ‘River Of Dreams’ or ‘Mysteries Of The Deep’ would conjure up the same vibe under a different name, but it really doesn’t matter. Most of these tunes I’ve known for a long, long time – for me the titles are inextricably linked to the music and so form part of the narrative here.

Thinking about it, I’m not even sure why it took so long to get around to this mix, as planning and executing it was possibly more enjoyable than any other I’ve done. Working with a specific theme provides a nice excuse to bring together styles and producers that on the face of it might not seem an obvious match, the main task being to figure out some kind of continuity. It was also a great opportunity to trawl the internet for watery track titles and discover a handful of hitherto unknown pearls. Rest assured I’ve got plenty more set aside :)

Aquatic Jungle (Part One)

Onwards with the aquatic jungle and I've gotta tell you, this one is pretty special to me, so I've been sitting on it for a few weeks. I've had some incredible post-millennium tunes such as Aquatica and Dark Water in my shortlist since the inception of this series, so this marks my first foray out of the 90s: selecting D&B and some halftime bits from across the last two decades with a handful of 90s tunes spliced in. Bit of an epiphany really as most of this selection comes from an era that I have long overlooked in favour of the 92-97 sound. Yes, you may question the 'jungle' of the title but once you coin a name and a template you're stuck with it - besides that, it's all jungle to me mate :)

Home of my own mixes - predominantly jungle/hardcore with the odd bit of D&B, plus eclectic sample-digging, breaks and hip-hop, techno & electronica. 

Pre-2001, all mixes vinyl; Post-2016, all mixes digital (DJay 2); Post-2018, Ableton Live. Why? Why not?
I've got an old skool DJ's mentality, early influences ranging from Sublove, Ratty, Randall & Hype to Coldcut, DJ Juice, MK & Primo.  In the early 00s I turned my back on D&B, retired my turntables in favour of family/work commitments, and got into funk, soul, reggae and so on... a lot of this driven by curiosity around the sample roots of hardcore and jungle.  Forward another decade and an early mid-life crisis saw me messing around with virtual decks on my phone, and later acquiring a vinyl ripper, with one vision in mind: making mixes.
Although I'm partial to the odd DJay or vinyl mix when I get the chance, the progression into Ableton Live was a simple means to an end.  My ideas stretch further than the limitations of my physical collection and real-time mixing, and by sequencing I can pick, choose, chip away and structure mixes at my leisure. Which I do... a lot :)

Wait, there's more ... an absolute stack of classic golden era/old skool hip-hop/turntablism, jungle and d&b, hardcore, techno and house mixes retrieved from my dusty tape & CD archives.  This includes (by my reckoning) the most exhaustive collections of classic Full Cycle and Sublove Galaxy Radio shows, live Ruffneck Ting jungle tapes, loads of studio & compilation mixes, all manner of rave tapes, and so on.
